Oceans Between Us

"Giving Zachie Some Love" and Goodbyes Suck.

MOVING DAY. JAZ'S POV.
I slowly packed all of the boxes into the moving truck. I perked up when my dad pulled into the driveway, but after he got into the packing and catching up with my mom, I was all alone with this again. I was humming Come Down With Love under my breath, thinking about how long it would take for others to hear it. I was there when Zach sang it with his acoustic, and it sounded great. Oh, yeah, Zach. I've been trying to keep him out of my thoughts all day, yet here he is.

I packed the last box in, sighing. "Mom, when does the truck take off?"
"3 hours until the moving guys get here," she said, paying attention to the checklist she'd made. Typical OCD mom.
"Can I head over to Zach's?" I asked, hopeful.
"Don't take long, honey, and don't forget your phone. I'll call you 10 minutes before we take off."
"Kay, mom," I said.
On the drive to Zach's, I thought the depressing thoughts everyone has while moving. I knocked on the door, no answer. I sat down on the front porch, hoping he hadn't left already. No, he can't have. He's leaving around 6 today. All of a sudden, Vic opened the door.
"Hey Jaz, Zach's up in his room."
"Thanks Vic," I said, quickly hugging him.
"No problem," he said coolly.
I laughed and rushed up the stairs to Zach's room.
"Hey!" I shouted, giving him a huge hug. He, of all people, could brighten up the worst of days.
"What're you doing here?" He said with a smile on his face.
"Leaving in three hours. Time to kill!"
"That's awesome!" He kissed me.
"So, what to do?"
"You're asking me that question? I know nothing about this town. I've been here a week."
"Geez, I'm sorry..."
"Just kidding, give Zachie some love." He pulled me into a massive hug.
"I can't believe I have to move in the middle of senior year," I thought out loud.
"It'll be okay. Hey, did you ever find out where you're going?"
"Nah, my dad wants me to read the road signs. He hasn't even told my mom," I sighed.
"Must be big then," he smiled.
"Probably another small town like this, when I don't know anyone. I didn't even stay here for a year, and I have no Colorado friends. I had Chicago friends and Pittsburgh friends. Heck, I even had Wildwood friends. We didn't even stay there for 6 months. I just do better in the city."
"See, I'm the same. I don't talk to people I have to see again and again every day for however long, I like to be social sometimes."
"You? Social?" I joked.
"Hey!" He tackled me onto the bed, hands behind my head.
"Let me up!" I Shouted.
"Apologize," he fake sobbed.
"I'm sorry I said you weren't social," I said in a monotonous voice.
"Mean it," he 'sobbed' again.
"I'm very deeply sorry, Zachary Porter, I regret my mistake, could you ever forgive me?" I said, 'with great emotion.'
"I don't know, it just might take more than a vocal apology," he had a cheesy grin on his face.
"I don't know, maybe you should be the one apologizing to me."
"Why?"
"Because."
"Because why?"
"Just kiss me already," I whispered.
My phone rang.
"Uh, I should take this," I mumbled.
"Okay."
I walked out into the hall.
"Yeah?"
"Jaz, we're leaving a little late. After supper, sometime around 5 or 6. Your father had a little incident with a box... let's just say, we're inside prepping a foot for a cast."
I sighed. "I don't remember him being that clumsy."
"Well, he tripped on your brother's skateboard."
"That explains it," I laughed.
"Bye, mom," I said.
"Bye, sweetie," I heard. Following that, was a click.
"Zach?" I said walking into his room.
"We've got 'till like 5, so do you want to go on our first official date?"
"We 'broke up', remember?"
"...oh, yeah." I sighed as my heart dropped and walked out the door.
"Bye, friend," I whispered.
I can't believe I just left him like that.
