Vampires, Werewolves, and... Love? Oh My!

BBQ

I was surprised to see Dad's police cruiser parked outside when we got home from school. "Ugh, Dad? I know I'm new here, but shouldn't you be at work right now?"
He chuckled. Dad gave me a warm hug as if we hadn't fought at dinner the previous night. "Technically, yes. I took the rest of the day off so we can have a welcome home barbecue for you. I've already started calling people. Bella, you can call Edward if you'd like."
"Sure," she said excitedly running to the phone.
"So basically, you're using me as an excuse to have yourself a party. And who exactly have you invited?"
"You know these people already and they want to tell you welcome back. I've invited Billy and Jacob, Sam Uley, the Clearwaters, and a few others from La Push."
I saw Bella bite her lip nervously before she started talking on the phone. "Edward? We're having a barbecue at my house today for Lizzy. Can you come? Yeah, you and Alice... Yes, they are, too. Please? Oh, thank you so much! Yeah, see you soon. I love you, too. 'Bye."
"Dad, I don't know any of these people," I stated after I was done listening to Bella's conversation. "Why do I have to go to this barbecue?"
He rolled his eyes, something he did a lot when I was little, although I’d yet to see him roll his eyes at Bella. "Honey, these people all remember you and they want to see you. It's just going to be here in the back yard. I just want you to stay for a while and try to enjoy it. If you still hate it, you can go back inside."
"Fine," I huffed. "I'll give it an hour."
At six o'clock, the backyard was full of people that I didn't know. I sat on a lawn chair watching the sun go down as people hugged me and said hello. I mostly ignored them to enjoy the sunset, my favorite time of day because of the amazing colors. "Lizzy, this is Billy Black. He and I used to go fishing together when you girls were young," Dad said, introducing me to the man in the wheel chair. "I'm sure you remember his twins, Rachel and Rebecca."
"Um, yeah, yeah. Nice to see you again," I lied. Billy was the first person that I even vaguely recognized. He and Dad went off to the food table while I lounged in my chair for a few more minutes.
I snuck out a beer and sipped it carefully. Yeah, I know that underage drinking in my police chief dad’s backward was not a very smart idea but I really needed a pick-me-up. Luckily it was getting dark and no one was really paying attention to me anymore. I downed a few beers at my lawn chair before my twin yelled for me. I winced a little but her voice was too cheery for her to have noticed my drinks.
"Liz, come here for a sec," Bella commanded.
I rolled my eyes and debated whether or not to give up my spot on the lawn chair. Bella narrowed her eyes at me and I made my way over to where she was standing with her boyfriend and a small pixie girl with black hair, pale skin, and the same golden eyes as Edward. "Yeah?" I snapped impatiently
"Lizzy, you remember Edward? And this is his sister, Alice. She's my best friend."
Alice hugged me as if we'd known each other for ages. I thought it was awkward and her freezing skin didn’t help any. "We're going to be great friends, you and I. You are going to absolutely love it here in Forks. I hope you plan on staying a while."
I snorted loudly. "Sorry, hon, but I plan on bailing A-sap. You see, I have very specific plans for my future that don't involve staying here for any extended period of time."
Alice wrinkled her nose and her eyes flashed almost knowingly. "Well, the future's not set in stone."
"Tell me about it. Coming to live with my dad and twin was never part of my agenda. But I could always change my future back, right?"
Alice was about to say something when she and her brother suddenly tensed up. "Hi, Jacob," Bella said brightly. Edward was glaring at something over my left shoulder. I turned to see a boy around my age with dark skin, perfectly white teeth, and pitch black hair that grew almost to his shoulders. He glared right back at Edward. Bella cleared her throat, obviously trying to diffuse the hostility in the air. "Jacob, you remember my sister, Lizzy?"
Jacob looked at me and his eyes grew wide. "Hi, I'm Jacob Black." He held out his hand and I shook it. Damn! His hand was so hot, like it'd been over a fire.
"Lizzy,” I replied bluntly. “Sorry, I don't remember you."
He shrugged. "You and Bella used to hang out on the beach with my sisters, Rachel and Rebecca."
I thought about that for a moment longer. I suddenly remembered Billy fishing with my dad. Bella and I were having a contest against the Black twins to see who could make the better mud pies. Their little brother was the judge.
"Right. I remember," I said with a smirk. "You're the one that ate mud."
"Uh, yeah." He flushed slightly.
My eyes hardened. "You're the same little punk that thought it'd be funny to throw said mud at me and Bella!"
He stepped back from the hardness in my voice. "I think you got even. You pushed me into the water!"
"Because you made my sister cry!" I shouted back.
"Oh, right," he muttered under his breath.
I turned on my heel and marched upstairs. I slammed the bathroom door shut and sat on the toilet seat pulling my bathroom bag from under the sink. I don't know why I was so mad at that Jacob kid. I mean, that had happened like ten years ago but I was still beyond pissed off. I guess I'm just way too over protective of Bella.
I pulled out a razor and let it slide across my smooth forearm. I just loved the red color of blood, and it helped me calm down seeing it flow freely. Yeah, I guess I'm kind of a weirdo.
