Vampires, Werewolves, and... Love? Oh My!

Short Fuse

I was still plenty pissed off about the whole stupid barbecue and fighting with Jacob. I didn’t get my sleep that night and that made me even grumpier. Of course, to make things worse, Jacob called that morning. Bella’s lips were pulled in a wide grin. “It’s for you.”
My eyes narrowed. “Hello?”
“Hey, Lizzy. It’s Jacob.”
My teeth clamped together and my eyes widened in horror. “What do you want? I thought that you were avoiding me.”
“I kinda was. Um, I wanted to call and apologize for last night.”
I rolled my eyes. “Yeah, yeah, whatever. It wasn’t a big deal.” Yeah, I’d overreacted but I didn’t care.
“Yeah, it was a stupid fight.”
“Excuse me? What’s that supposed to mean?”
“What? Nothing! It’s just that you-“
“Good-bye, Jacob.” I hung up quickly. I didn’t want to take the blame and I was pissy from being so tired. Stupid Bella for giving me the phone.
I was sulking during the entire car ride with Bella.
“Say something,” my sister ordered.
“Something.”
She glared at me. “That’s not what I meant and you know it.”
“Like I care? I’m a smartass, Bells. You know that so get over it.”
She leaned over and punched my arm. “What the fuck,” I snapped. She tossed me a smug look and my short fuse went off. I leaned over and tackled her against the door.
“Ouch!” She screamed.
“Hey!” I protested. “Let go of my hair! That’s so cheating!”
“Ow! Stop biting me!” She pulled harder at my hair and I bit harder against her shoulder.
Somehow, her door swung open and we tumbled out of the truck onto a thick layer of snow. We both screamed and let go of each other. I don’t know how, but I landed on the bottom. By then, we had a large crowd had gathered and was watching us like we were crazy.
“Ugh, get your fat ass off me,” I yelled, slapping her leg.
She groaned and rolled away onto the cold snow. We exchanged a look and then both burst out laughing. Edward was running up to Bella at that point. He scooped her up and I could see him looking over her quickly. “Are you okay?”
She giggled. “Yeah, Edward, I’m fine. Ouch, I can’t believe you bit me!”
I ran my hand threw my hair. My head was a little sore from her yanking at my hair. “Yeah, well you fight dirty,” I argued. “That is such a girl move to pull.”
She stuck her tongue out at me like a little kid. “I am a girl. Ugh, I’m going to have a bruise on my shoulder from your teeth.”
Edward suddenly stiffened up, his golden eyes fixed on the ground. I followed his gaze to the drops of blood that turned the snow scarlet. “Bella, you’re bleeding,” he said.
Her brown eyes widened in horror and she gasped. She touched her forehead. She was bleeding and when she saw the blood she looked like she was going to barf. “Oh, I’m so sorry!”
I snorted. “You are such a dork. How the fuck did that happen when I’m the one that ate pavement?”
Edward turned to me and scrunched up his nose. “I think that you’ll be fine, but you might want to go to the nurse. We all know that Bella’s just an easy bleeder. Let’s get you to the nurse, Bella.”
I rolled my eyes and decided against going to get myself checked out. I wasn’t bleeding or broken so there was nothing to cry about. I went straight to my locker to get my books out.
“Oh my god. Look Jessica. Her hair looks like total crap. They’re both just so damn insane.”
I whipped my head around and glared at the two blondes staring at me. One of them was that Jessica girl that had annoyed me to no end in first hour. The other was a girl named Lauren that I had seen a few times. Based on first impressions, the girl was a snobby little bitch, like Regina George from Mean Girls. “Can I help you with something?” I snapped.
Lauren tossed back her blonde hair and narrowed her eyes. “We weren’t talking to you.”
I gave her a saccharine smile. “No, but you were talking about me. If you have something to say, then say it to my face. There’s nothing worse than a stupid bimbo talking shit because she’s too much of a scared little bitch to come right out and say what’s on her mind.”
“Did you just call me a bitch?”
I rolled my eyes. “Among other things,” I hinted.
Her shocked expression was beyond priceless. Her breath hitched and she shoved me up against the lockers. I let out a laugh. “Honey, you’re going to have to do much better than that.”
So I might have cooled down after my little wrestling match with my twin, but Lauren certainly got my temper to flare up again. I tackled her to the ground and started punching. She was crying in no time but I didn’t stop. I was still trashing, trying to land a punch, when Coach Clapp, the P.E. teacher pulled me off of her. “That’s enough,” he hissed. It took Coach Clapp and another teacher to drag me to the principal’s office. I sat in the hard plastic chairs and played with my hair. I was expecting the cops to get called in, a policy that I was used to at my old school when it came to fights. I was only half right on my assumption. My dad was looking extremely pissed off when he came into the office.
He talked with the principal for a while and I caught a few words of their conversation. “The school isn’t pressing charges this time, Chief Swan. Next time this happens, we will and she will be expelled. We won’t even suspend her for this incident.”
“Thank you. Is Lauren’s family going to press?”
“I don’t believe the Mallory family will file an assault charge against her.”
The office door opened and Dad stomped up to me. “You are grounded. Do you know what would have happened if the school had pressed charges against you?”
“I would have gotten kicked out and not had to come anymore?” I asked in a bored tone.
“You would have gotten expelled and you would have been arrested.”
I snorted. “Well that would have been something, wouldn’t it? My own father arresting me. Hmm… it wouldn’t have been the strangest thing. At least this time I would know the cop.” I enjoyed making a joke of my trouble making.
Dad gritted his teeth. “Elizabeth,” he hissed warningly.
My jaw locked but I just couldn’t hold back. “Look here, Dad you lost your right to play the father bit a long time ago. I don’t even want to be here so don’t push me. I do what I want and you can’t stop me.”
“Just get to class, Lizzy,” he sighed in defeat. “We’ll talk about this more when I get home.”
I rolled my eyes and stormed down the hall.
