Make Me Better

Chapter 35

It surprised when I saw my mom with a slight baby bump. I tried not to stare since I would hate if people just stared at my stomach. What surprised me even more was the fact she was over at MY house, talking to dad.

"Hey, honey." She smiled as she spotted me, I smiled back and waved slightly. My eyes were fixed on my dad, I was trying to decipher his facial expression. I couldn't tell if he was happy or not.

"What are you doing here?" I asked, setting my backpack on the floor and slipping out of my jacket.

She shrugged and then looked over at my dad, he looked over at me and then spoke slowly, "I invited her over.... To talk." I nodded. A bit of relief surged through me at the thought of them trying to get past this. I at least wanted them to be on speaking terms. Before I could excuse myself, my dad stood up,

"I have to go, I'll be home before 9 , Olive." Dad stood up and then turned to look at my mother, "I'll call you later."

"Where are you going?"

"To the office, I promise not to stay too long." He came over to kiss my forehead softly. I smiled up at him before reaching over to grab his suitcase and handing it to him. There was a slight awkward silence after he left. I looked over at my mother.

"I'm hungry, " She smiled, "Want to go grab a bite to eat?" I nodded in approval and followed her out the house. We drove my mom's favorite diner. Which was packed with a bunch of people, we waited about 10 minutes before being seated.

"So, you told your dad about Frank?" I looked up from the menu to look at her. Oh god, what did he say to her?"

I spoke slowly, almost reluctantly " Yeah? What did he say?"

She laughed, "Just that you're his baby and he doesn't think anyone will ever be good enough for you."

I rolled my eyes, "He's crazy." I looked over at her, "Hopefully, it isn't a girl." She glanced down at her stomach quickly and then let out a tiny chuckle, "I have a feeling it is."

"Sucks for her. Dad will-" I stopped myself quickly. I didn't even know if my dad was the 'actual' dad. I quickly changed the subject.

"Frank's great, though. Dad has nothing to worry about."

"I hope so," She smiled, "Olive? Can I ask you a question." I had a feeling the question was going to be an embarrassing question.

"Depends." I said slowly.

"Depends on what?" She questioned, eyebrows arched.

"On what the question is."

"I'm asking you either way." She replied, "Have you and Frank-"

"Mom. Ew!" I said a bit too loudly. She gave me a curious look. I was grateful that our waiter came up seconds later, asking what we wanted. I looked down at the linoleum floor as the waiter walked away.

"Are you embarrassed?" She asked.

I sighed, "Mom. Please, don't do this to me." I hid my face behind my hands. I could hear her laughing,

"Why are you embarrassed? It's a natural thing-" I groaned loudly. I absolutely hated when people said that, 'Its natural'. So? Doesn't mean that makes it less embarrassing. I freaking know its natural, people do it all the time.

"Mom. "

"So, I'll take that as a 'no'?" I moved my hands away from my face.

"You got that right."

"Do you not want to?"

"This is totally embarrassing." I muttered under my breath, "Mom, I don't know. We've only been together for a while. I don't want to rush into things. Sure, maybe later. But not now. "

"Do you love Frank?"

I nodded.

"Does he love you?"

"I'm assuming." I grinned.

"Just make sure you do it with the right person."

"I'll keep that in mind, mom." I murmured. Our food came and that seemed to shut my mom up. After finishing up at the diner, my mom and I went to the mall. Which was sort of weird since we're not much of shoppers. I didn't expect to have as much fun. I guess it was because I was finally comfortable around her again.

The next day was a total bust. I didn't even want to be at school. The goddamn rumors were everywhere! To top it off everyone believed the stupid rumors. I won't lie I was a bit skeptical at first but I knew Frank didn't lie to me.

"You heard?" He asked softly as I walked towards him, he was leaning against my locker. I only nodded.

"You know they aren't true, right?" He sounded desperate.

"I know they aren't. Unless you lied to me." I gave him a hard look.

He sighed, "I would never lie to you." He pulled me in for a tight hug, "She's fucking crazy." I shook my head and grasped Frank tighter against me.

"Why would she do that?"

"I don't know, Oli. And I'm sorry." He kissed my cheek. I sighed softly and rested my head against his shoulder. Wondering how long it would take things to blow over.
