Make Me Better

Chapter 57

My mom came to pick me up in no time, which I was happy for. She didn't ask questions as she drove as home, it was quite odd, knowing my mom, I thought she would be begging to know what had happened.

"Thanks for picking me up again." I said as we pulled into the driveway, "I know I shouldn't have since dad said you should be resting and all."

She smiled, "It's okay, honey. I feel a bit better now. Just a little nervous. I still have a month and half to go, I shouldn't really be having contractions." I could see the worry written all over her face.

"It'll be ok." I said, trying my hardest to sound convincing. She only nodded, I followed her into the house, where I went straight to my room. I laid in bed for a couple hours before I started to drift off into sleep. I tried to keep the thought of Frank at a party with Jenna out of my mind, but it wasn't that easy. Jenna was nothing but trouble, and I was starting to think that leaving Frank alone was a bad idea. Most importantly, why in the heck were Jenna and Cooke on talking terms?

The next day, I woke up quite early. I made my way into the kitchen, where my mom was leaning against the wall. I stared at her for a moment,

"Are you ok, mom?" I asked quickly, making my way over to her. She opened her eyes and looked over at me, she smiled weakly. "just some pain." She let her hand fall to her protruding belly. She was making me nervous, I wouldn't know what to do if anything were to happen to her or the baby.

"Maybe you should sit down." I said, taking her arm gently. I walked her over to the couch, she sat down slowly, both hands on her stomach. She tried to convince me that she was perfectly fine, but the way her face contorted in pain told me otherwise.

I walked into the kitchen, getting my mom a glass of water when she gasped loudly. I jogged back into the living room, to see tears in her eyes.

"What?" I asked in a worried tone, I looked over her several times and I didn't see anything wrong. "Mom, what is it?!" This time frantically. I walked closer to her, staring at her, waiting for her to tell me what was bothering her. She awkwardly sat up, her hands holding onto the ends of the couch.

"I'm bleeding." She whispered. She got up, and I saw the splotches of blood on her pants. Oh, god, I could have fainted right then and there. I didn't know what to do, I didn't know what it meant.

"Drive me to the hospital, Olive." She ordered. I could only nod. She grasped my shoulder as we made our way outside. I figured that calling my dad would be a good idea, but I didn't have the time to go back inside and get my cell phone. I drove as calmly as I could, I might have been speeding, but I was nervous and scared. My mom didn't make much noise during the ride, I could tell she was crying by the way she sniffled and wiped her eyes constantly. Once we arrived at the hospital, I pretty much stuttered what was happening to a nearby church. She went to go get mom a wheelchair, they wheeled her away quickly in some unknown direction.

"We're just going to run some tests, see what's causing the bleeding, ok?" A nurse spoke to me, she was talking slowly, trying to calm my nerves.

I nodded, "Can I see her when you're done with all the..."

"Of course, honey." I sat in the waiting room, tapping my foot repeatedly on the shiny floor. I was going a little mad inside, I just hoped that my mom was ok. I sat there for what seemed like forever. A while later, I went to ask the front desk if I could use the phone. I called my dad, and before I could really explain anything, he had said he was on his way over. It didn't take my dad long to get to the hospital, he rushed in looking frantic and worried.

"What happened?" he asked me in a short breath. I shrugged a little as I explained to him what had occurred this morning. He sighed and ran his hands over his face,

"Dear?" I looked up to see the nurse from earlier before, she smiled sweetly at me, "Your mother has had a placental abruption, in which the placental lining starts to tear away from the uterus."

Before she could go on, my dad interrupted, "Will my wife be okay?" I smiled at how he referred to her as his 'wife'.

"In this case, it isn't so serious. Placental abruption can lead to death in expectant mothers and fetus depending on how series the problem is. Your mom falls under the category of stage 2, she isn't in any shock which is good news, but the fetus is a bit distressed. With that, we're going to have to do an emergency c-section. Other than being a bit distressed there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the fetus. We're hoping with delivering the baby, that we'll be able to rid of the problem, " She still had soft smile on her face, making me feel a little better, she turned to look at my dad, "Luckily, your wife hasn't lost much blood, so there will be no need for blood transfusion. We're hoping the baby won't have any further complications after being delivered, but since she'll be premature we're going to check her into the NICU, just to be safe."

I was still a bit confused and I had wanted to ask her what exactly caused this but before I could open my mouth, my dad was asking if he could be in the delivery room.

"Olive, go home, I'll call you once the baby is born. No need to be waiting around here, ok?" He asked, and then leaned down to kiss my forehead. I stood there even after they left, a little dumbfounded.
I kept telling myself, that my mom would be fine, so would the baby. The nurse had said she wasn't in the bad stages, so that meant she would be fine, right? I drove home and tried to calm my nerves, I wanted to stay at the hospital but the place only made me even more nervous.

"Frank?" I asked loudly, I approached him, walking over to the front porch, "What are you doing here?" He was sitting on the front steps, picking at his shoes. His hair was a little messy, and he looked tired, with bags under his eyes.

"I called you, but I guess you didn't have your phone?" He pondered. I shook my head,

"I had to take my mom to the hospital, she had some problems, and now they're planning to do any emergency c-section to make sure the baby will be okay." I whispered.

His eyes widened, "I hope they're both okay," I could only nod, "They'll be fine, you know." He added quickly.

"Yeah." I forced myself to smile, "So, what's up?"

He sighed and covered his face with his hands, when he spoke it was kind of muffled. "I think I fucked up last night."
