The Devil's Pawn

Ch. 12

*****There's some slight homosexuality at the very end between Sam& Taylor. You've been warned. Just skim if you don't like. I tried not to go into detail with it for those who don't.(: ***

I avoided people for as much as I could in the morning.

No, avoided wasn’t an accurate term.

I drowned myself in work to keep me from conversing with anyone around me through-
out the morning.

That was better.

I drowned myself in work to keep me from conversing with anyone around me through-
out the morning. Yet, at the same time, I wasn’t openly avoiding people. The urge to talk to
others seemed to disappeared as I went through my day, getting the work needed done
finished.

I found my mind drifting off to replay the kiss from Saturday morning.

If I closed my eyes, I could remember the feel of his lips against mine, the feel of his
skin on my skin. The palpitations from my heart.

“Taylor!” A soft voice hissed.

I opened my eyes, glancing around. Elizabeth met my eyes, motioning towards the
teacher lecturing in the front. I blinked a few times before setting my concentration back on
learning.

This boy needed to get out of my head.

A slip of blue paper landed on my desk. I frowned, picking it up and unfolding it.
Elizabeth’s neatly scripted handwriting covered a small section at the top.

‘Are you ok? You seem really distant today’

I glanced back at her, meeting her eyes. She motioned with her hands for me to write an
answer quickly.

I reached into my bag, grabbing a pen for a response.

‘I’m fine. I’m just a little tired, that’s all.’

I discreetly set the paper on her desk. Within a few seconds, the blue paper made its
way back onto mine with another line added to it.

‘I’m just worrying for you. I’m so sorry that I keep leaving you for Brett. I’ll sit with you at
lunch today.’

I frowned, realizing that I didn’t want to sit with her. Despite not being entirely
comfortable with Fits and Tanner, I enjoyed lunch with Erica and Trenton most of the time.

‘Don’t feel like you have to, Elizabeth. I don’t want you to miss your chance with Brett—
this is a once in a life time shot. Erica’s not as bad as you’d think too.’

I watched as Elizabeth’s expression changed from flattered to worry. I bit my lip, trying to
predict her next response.

‘Thank you for the love, but she’s not one of those good kids. From what I hear, she’s
very into drugs like marijuana.’

I bit my lip,

‘I’m not going to turn into a druggie. She doesn’t do any of that when I’m around. I’m
perfectly fine hanging out with her.’

Elizabeth responded with, ‘What about Friday? You looked like a complete slut! I know
those weren’t your clothes. You’ve never worn something that provocative before. I’m just
worried for you Taylor.’

I sighed quietly, ‘Thank you for worrying, but there really is no need. I promise.’

Elizabeth read the note before looking up in my eyes. Worry filled hers to the depth. I
smiled back encouragingly. She needn’t worry for me. Messing around with Brett was bad
enough for her.

I purposely directed my attention back to the teacher before us, trying to subtly give her
the message I didn’t want to continue this conversation. She wasn’t one to talk. She had
forced me to sit with them and now that I was slowly getting adjusted to the change she
wanted to ruin that?

I shook my head slightly.

I wasn’t having that.

The bell rang a few minutes later. I stood up slowly, taking my time in gathering together
my books. Elizabeth waited for me at the door, a gentle smile across her lips. She opened
the door for us, slipping out after me.

“So I was thinking maybe we could hang out or something this weekend?” She asked,
knowing my mother’s rules of planning ahead.

I bit my lip, “I don’t know. Finals are coming up soon and I really want to get a head
start.”

“Oh…” She sounded dejected, but I was being serious. I did have every intention of
spending my time preparing for my finals.

“I promise we’ll hang out soon though.” I said hoping to brighten her mood.

She laughed, “It’s fine, Taylor.”

I grinned, glad that she understood.

I felt an arm wrap itself around my waist, dragging me back. I stumbled backwards and
away from Elizabeth, whose face looked very angry. I glanced up once I regained my balance
to see Trenton’s smirking face.

I mouthed sorry to my abandoned friend.

She rolled her eyes and kept walking in the opposite direction, clearly upset with the
little stunt Trenton pulled.

I sighed, upset.

“Sup, Bunny?” He asked, leading me in the wrong direction of my next class.

“What’s up with ‘bunny’?” I frowned, looking up at him. I hid my feelings of leaving
Elizabeth, sensing that Trenton wouldn’t care.

“Just trying out nicknames.”

“I thought I was ‘Tay’ or ‘Sweet Cheeks’” I grumbled.

“I want more of a variety.” He smirked, ruffling my hair slightly.

“Trenton…” I groaned, trying to fix it.

He chuckled.

“May I ask why you dragged me away from Elizabeth? We were having an important
conversation, so you know.” I pushed.

“What? I wanted to talk to my favorite neighbor.”

I rolled my eyes, “Seriously, what do you want?”

“Go drop your books off at your locker.” He instructed.

“No.” I argued, “I need these for my next class. Speaking of which, we’re going the
wrong way…”

He shrugged, “You’re not going there anymore.”

“I-I’m not?” I stuttered. “Care to elaborate?”

“We’re leaving this fuck-place.” He stated simply.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, we’re leaving. Now. You, me, Erica, and the boys.”

“I-we can’t just leave now,” I said, surprised. “It’s not even lunchtime! I’ve never skipped
school in my life!”

“There’s a first for everything.”

“And now is not going to be it.”

“Yeah it is.”

“Can’t you at least wait until after lunch?” I begged, not wanting to sit alone. I had already
angered Elizabeth. I doubted she would sit with me now.

“Nope.” Trenton popped the ‘p’

“I’m not leaving with you guys.”

“Yeah, you are.”

“My mother will kill me if I do.”

“She’ll never find out.”

“Of course she will! They’ll take attendance!”

Trenton smirked, “This is where my genius mind comes in. See, I knew you would be
against this, so I’ve got a plan. Go to the nurse’s office and say you’re having chest pains. My
dad will come pick you up and the rest of the day you’ll be fine. If your mom asks, tell her that
you got a ride home from a friend or something.”

“She’ll know all my friends are in my grade.”

“Tell her Erica’s sister or something. Make something up.”

“Look, Trenton, this is a smart idea and all, but I don’t really think it’s going to work. I’ve
got nothing to back up the chest pains…”

A pair of arms wrapped around Trenton’s neck, a head poking over his shoulder. Erica
smiled at me from behind Trenton. “Hey, Taylor.”

“Hey.” I said, “You’re not actually leaving with him are you?”

“Of course I am.” She laughed as if it were the most obvious thing in the world, “Did
Trenton tell you of my plan for you?”

“Her plan?” I raised an eyebrow suspiciously.

“Our plan.” He corrected.

“My plan.” Erica snapped, lightly cuffing Trenton.

I laughed nervously, “Yeah, he told me. As much as I appreciate the effort you went to
thinking this up, I have to decline. I’m not ok with skipping school.”

“Whatever.” Erica shrugged, “Let’s go Trenton.”

Trenton shot me a look, “Are you sure, Sweet Cheeks?”

“No ‘bunny’ this time?” I teased.

He rolled his eyes.

“Yeah, I’m sure.”

“Next time you’re coming.” He instructed.

I rolled my eyes.

“I’m being serious.” Trenton’s face lacked the joking tone he normally held. “You’re
coming with us next time. I’ll pick you up after school.”

“Don’t worry about it.” I waved, “I can ride the bus.”

He rolled his eyes, “I’ll be in my normal parking spot.”

“I need to get to class…” I trailed off. I waved goodbye to Erica and Trenton, getting a
returned wave from Erica. Trenton gave me a sharp look before turning around and walking
away with Erica.

Lunch was going to be lonely today.

~*~

The day passed quickly. Despite not having anyone to sit with at lunch, the period
passed at a fast pace. I kept my head dug into a History book, preparing myself for the quiz
that I had tomorrow. The rest of the periods weren’t bad either.

I got a lucky break with the homework this evening. I had managed to finish most of it in
class for almost all of my classes, the others having finished it entirely. That put me in a nice
mood to realize that if I had indeed left with Trenton, not only would I be behind everyone and
in trouble, but I would have to all the work tonight that I didn’t anymore.

Spanish was the last class of the day, and it was nice to work with the girl from my first
period once again. I apologized to her for not working with her the other day due to Trenton’s
forceful demands. She laughed it off, and once again we were good.

The bell rang, dismissing the students from the prison we were forced in for eight hours
daily. I was the last to leave the room, wishing Senora a good evening. She returned it.

The sun was shining down on the Earth, providing us with another beautiful day. My
eyes strayed over the parking lot, glancing around for Trenton’s car.

Not surprisingly, it wasn’t here.

My vision was cut short has two hands clamped around my eyes. A pair of lips brushed
past my ear, whispering in a soft voice, “Guess.”

I turned around, hugging her, “I missed you, Sam.”

Sam pouted slightly, “Apparently not enough.”

“Wh…what do you mean?” I asked, worried. Had I done something to offend her? Did
she somehow find out about the kiss between Trenton and I?

“I was hoping that maybe I’d get a hello kiss but…” She trailed off, sighing dramatically.

I laughed, rolling my eyes, “You scared the hell out of me, Sam. I thought you were
talking about something serious.”

She feigned hurt, “I was being serious!”

I cupped her face with my hands, gently pressing my lips against hers. Sam smiled into
the kiss, moving her lips gently. There was no tongue, but it was long and sweet.

I pulled away first, smiling, “Happy?”

“I guess…”

I laughed, leaning in slightly, “Would another make you feel better?”

She bit her lip, pretending to think. “You know, I think that it might help a little bit. Why do
you try it and find out?”

I leaned in more, wrapping my arms around her neck. Sam wrapped hers around my
waist, holding me to her. I brushed my lips against hers, meeting her eyes. She gasped
slightly as I trailed my tongue across her bottom lip seductively.

“Taylor.” She whispered.

“Yes?” I smirked, playing with her hair.

“You’re such a fucking tease.” She pressed her lips roughly on mine, earning a grin
from me. She nipped at my bottom lip, quickly gaining entrance. Our tongues danced
together as she slipped her fingers inside the edge of my pants. Sam pulled her hands
around my waist, fiddling with the buckle of my belt.

I pulled her hands away, holding the wrists. Breaking the kiss, I raised an eyebrow,
“We’re in public.”

“So?” She moaned, “I’ve really missed you.”

“So have I, but I want my first time with you to be special.” I grinned.

She sighed, “You know it’s going to hurt, right?”

“It’s not going to be a real penis, and I’m sure you’ll make it alright.”

“Oh, baby, I’ll make it more than alright.” She promised seductively. I giggled as she
trailed her lips along my neck.

“Careful, I have to go to home to my mother soon.” I warned, playing with the edge of her
shirt.

“I’m behaving.” She growling, pressing her lips quickly to mine. “What are you doing
Friday?”

I thought for a moment, “Nothing, why?”

“We’re going on a date.”

I raised an eyebrow, “You’re taking me on a date?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Movies?”

“Sounds wonderful.” I grinned.

“Just tell your mom we’re staying at my place after…er well, make up a friend’s place.”
Sam laughed, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear.

I felt my heartbeat pick up, “You’re not doing this just to have sex with me, are you?”

“No, we don’t even have to go that far.” She whispered, “I mean, if you want to we will,
but I was hoping to just spend time with you.”

“You’re amazing, Sam.” I cooed.

“I know.” She laughed.

“No need to get cocky.” I rolled my eyes.

Sam’s eyes glanced behind me, frowning slightly, “Looks like we have company.”

I turned around hesitantly, stepping out of her arms. My eyes rested on Trenton who was
walking towards us. I groaned quietly, knowing Sam heard that.

“You’re late.” He said, standing next to me.

“You weren’t even here.” I mumbled, “Plus, I said I was taking the bus home anyways so
I don’t know why you bothered.”

“Because I already told you I’m your ride.”

“Whatever.” I huffed. “Do you mind leaving for a moment?”

“Yup.” He grinned boyishly at me.

“Who’s this?” Sam mouthed to me.

Shit, now I had to introduce them.

“Trenton, this is my girlfriend Sam,” I said, annoyed, “Sam, this is my new idiotic
neighbor, Trenton.”

Trenton stuck his hand out mockingly shaking Sam’s. “So you’re the chick that Taylor
makes out with after school.”

“The very one.” Sam said proudly, though her eyes were scanning Trenton in ways that
sent jealousy coursing through my veins.

“Well, Trenton we’d better get going.” I said, giving him a slightly shove.

“Now, hold on. I’d like to get to know Sam a little better.” Trenton said, winking slightly at
Sam. She giggled.

I felt my fists clench next to me. “No. You wouldn’t.”

“Oh, come on, Taylor. I’d like to meet your friends.” She frowned.

“Sam…” I trailed off.

She ignored me, her attention on Trenton, “So do you go here or…?”

“You know what? I need to get home. I have homework to do.” I hissed, grabbing
Trenton’s wrist. “We’re leaving. Bye Sam.”

Her eyes moved over to me, hurt flooding them. “Oh-alright… bye taylor.”

Guilt flushed out any hint of jealousy I was feeling. I pressed my lips against hers briefly
as an apology, “I can’t wait for Friday.”

She grinned, “Neither can I. Bye Taylor. It was nice meeting you Trenton.”

He smirked, “Same to you.”

Kind of a filler, kind of a foreshadowing chapter.
I didn't like writing it as much as I did others.
