Samantha Briggs.

We went way back.

Samantha had been in three of my classes in sophomore year before she moved away.
My parents had never gotten the chance to meet her, so they couldn’t judge her. I was
grateful for that because I liked Samantha.

She was gorgeous. Blonde hair that flowed halfway down her back, cut in perfect layers.
Every now and then she would dye a strand an abstract color, but she always pulled it off.
She had the most amazing bright blue eyes. They were so easy to get lost in.

And she had the perfect body. Not too skinny, definitely enough curves.

While Sam had moved away, she didn’t go far. She would ditch school every now and
then to visit me during the day.

For whatever reason, she liked me. Sam had once told me that she didn’t hook up with
other girls out of respect for me. While I was still a little upset that she hooked up with guys, I
brushed it off. She never lost contact with me.

Sam was the farthest I’d ever gone. I’d never kissed a boy, much preferring her lips
instead. Kissing was the farthest she let it go. She knew how innocent I was and wanted to
wait until we could both settle down into a real relationship before she did anything serious.

The memory of my first kiss stayed in my mind for the rest of the day. I avoided my
parents when I got home, feeling uncomfortable talking to them when I had kept this huge
secret.

I didn’t know what I would do if Sam and I ever got into a relationship.

I didn’t know if I would tell them or not.

I didn’t know how they’d react either, being my biggest fear of all.

Sunday passed quickly. The memory of my first kiss stayed in my mind for the rest of the
day. I avoided my parents when I got home, feeling uncomfortable talking to them when I had
kept this huge secret.

I ended up sleeping through my alarm clock Monday morning.

That morning, I walked into school in loose gray sweatpants with a yellow t-shirt that
dipped to a v-neck. Thankfully, my hair was curly enough to go natural for one day and not let
me look like a homeless person.

Elizabeth made a face at my appearance in first period. “You wake up a little late?”

“How’d you know?” I asked sarcastically, falling into my seat.

She smirked, “Just a guess.”

I rolled my eyes, digging out the homework I had completed on Friday. I turned it into our
teacher, grudging working on the work assigned for today.

The thing about my classes was that we weren’t taught them. We were expected to
figure them out with hints every now and then. It was much more difficult when you had an
annoyingly smart girl correcting your every mistake.

“No, Taylor, it’s x over 39. You need to flip them.” Elizabeth said. She glanced down at
my work, making another face, “You got number 10 wrong. It’s the square root of ninety-
seven, not eighty-six.”

I took a deep breath to resist the urge to punch her in the face.

The day went by horribly.

Lunch couldn’t have come fast enough. Now that it was May, we were allowed to eat at
the picnic tables provided in the courtyard. You were to sign in and out if you sat outside, but
it was definitely worth it.

We were given a fairly large space to sit with plenty of places to hide. As I walked to an
empty table, I passed multiple couples getting frisky where teachers couldn’t see.

I saw Trenton sitting at a table alone.

I took a deep breath, deciding to push past the fact that he had so rudely told me to go
away and sit with him on his first day here.

He didn’t look up from his tray as I sat down.

“Hey, Trenton” I smiled.

“What are you doing?” He grumbled, his attention of the phone that rested in his hand.

I blinked. “I uh… I thought I would sit with you so that you didn’t sit alone.”

“Did I asked you to sit with me?” He snapped, “I’m perfectly fine how I was.”

“Sorry, I was being polite…” I mumbled

“Politeness won’t get you anywhere.” Trenton snapped at me.

I frowned, “Of course it will. People will talk to you more. You won’t be such an outcast if
you aren’t rude to everyone you see.”

Trenton looked at me with a raised eyebrow and a smirk. “Are you implying I’m an
outcast?”

I blushed “Well… you’re not exactly the most popular person here…”

“It’s not like I don’t have friends though.”

“Already?” I asked, surprised. “It’s only been a few periods…”

He shrugged, glancing behind me.

I turned around hesitantly to three people standing behind me. I bit my lip, noticing how
they all screamed bad influence. One girl stood in the middle of two boys, all of them taller
than myself. I noticed how one of the boys had bloodshot eyes that went in and out of focus.

“These, Taylor, are my friends.” Trenton said, gesturing towards them.

“Uh…” I stood up awkwardly, avoiding eye contact “I guess I’ll be going then…”

“Uh.. bye-bye” Trenton said mockingly. The girl snickered as I moved around them.

“I thought her name as Anne.” The girl said.

I frowned. How could she have gotten so far off?

I shook my head, settling down at a table farthest away from them. I didn’t dare turn
around for fear of meeting one of their judging eyes.

Those were definitely bad kids.

Tanner, Fits, and Erica were notorious druggies. It was rumored in tenth grade that
Erica had gone to rehab after getting caught with what was apparently a lot of drugs. Tanner
was almost always high or drunk if he came to school. And Fits… well his real name wasn’t
Fits.

Steven Fitzgerald.

But nobody called him that. He was known as Fitz. Though he was a junior, almost every
druggie at our school was friends with him.

Trenton shouldn’t have been hanging out with them. He already looked scary enough.
He didn’t need the drugs to screw up his life too.

The rest of the day passed slowly. I found myself unfocused throughout my classes, my
thoughts wrapped around Trenton.

I wanted to know who would willingly hang out with people fully knowing they do horrible
things such as drugs. It was insanity!

The bell rang, and I walked out of my last period class in a daze. People shoved into me
trying to escape from school as quickly as possible. It didn’t matter when they got out of
here. What else was there to do, but drain your brain with television or study?

I grabbed two books from my locker, shoving them in my bag as I walked out. I pulled

my phone out of my pocket, checking to see if I had gotten any messages from my mother or father. I didn’t text much nor call aside from them.

*********************************************************

“Taylor.” A high pitched voice said.

I turned around, looking for the source. I felt arms wrap around my waist, pulling me
back away from the crowd. I didn’t have to look to know who had me.

Sam pressed my back against the wall, her hands on my waist. She grinded slightly into
me, brushing her lips just barely against mine. I brought my hands up, hooking them gently
in her hair.

Sam smiled, dangerously close “Hey Taylor.”

“Hey Sam.” I breathed, my heart pounding furiously in my chest.

“Miss me?” She teased, her fingers playing with the edge of my shirt.

“Like you wouldn’t believe.”

Sam pressed her lips against mine furiously, her arms wrapped around my waist. She
pressed her body against mine, trapping me to the wall. Sam’s hands slid down my back,
cupping my butt tightly.

“I missed you too, baby.” She whispered in my ear.

Sam kissed me again, slipping her tongue into my mouth. Her hands kneaded patterns
into my butt. I sighed as our tongues danced together, loving the feeling.

She pulled away too soon, pressing her forehead against mine. She swayed our bodies
back and forth gently. “What’s up?”

“Are you staying?”

She frowned, pecking my lips slightly, “I’m sorry baby.”

I groaned, “Why?”

“Mom wants me to start looking into colleges. Don’t worry, I’ll go somewhere close.”
She smiled.

I frowned, “But I don’t know where I’m going yet.”

“Stay local?”

I bit my lip “But there are so many better colleges out there for me…”

Sam sighed, staring at me longingly. “You’re so cute when you bite your lip.”

I let my lip slip out from under my teeth self consciously, laughing.

Sam sighed, giving me one more breath-taking kiss before pulling away. “I just wanted
to pop in and say high today.”

I linked our hands together, “I love it when you pop in.”

Sam pulled me forward into a hug before backing away, “Alright, I’ll be here hopefully
Thursday. Just leave your club or whatever early, ok?”

“First off, it’s not a club; it’s an afterschool study group.” I corrected, annoyed at how
many times I had already, “And you need to tell me if you aren’t there Thursday.”

***********************************************************

She wrapped her pink around mine, pressing her lips to them, “I promise.”

I smiled stupidly as she turned around, quickly hurrying off behind her. Sam never
stayed very long if she visited, just popping in for short visits. This was an exceptionally short
one. I watched her as she hurried off to her car, hair flowing down her back.

I picked up my bag that I had dropped in our small meeting, running a hand through my
hair. I straightened my shirt with hopes of appearing normal as I walked back to where most
kids were.

I looked at the ground, not meeting any eyes, as I walked to my bus. While I knew most
kids either wouldn’t care or most likely wouldn’t know that I’d just kissed a girl, I always felt
an overwhelming feeling of embarrassment.

I was never embarrassed with Sam; I was embarrassed of thoughts that may have
crossed minds.

I could never be embarrassed with Sam. She made everything perfect. Even if only for a
few minutes. In those minutes, I forgot about all my troubles of school. Today, she helped to
eradicate my thoughts entirely with her kisses.

“Taylor!” A deep voice called.

I glanced up looking around, utterly confused. My eyes fell on Trenton who was nodding
me over to him. Frowning, I walked towards his car, noticing how most of the kids were
clearing out to their buses.

As I approached him, I noticed the smirk across his lips.

“Can I help you?” I asked as politely as I could muster. It was more difficult than normal
since this was the kid that had been openly rude to me.

“Who’s the hot chick walking away a few minutes ago?” He asked

I felt my body tense at how he talked about Sam. He didn’t know her; I knew her. “No one
you care about.”

“Oh really?” He raised an eyebrow.

“Yes really.” I crossed my arms, glancing around. “Look, I have to get on my bus…”

“I’ll drive you home.”

“My mom wouldn’t…”

“I’ll drive you home” Trenton repeated more forcefully.

I bit my lip, glancing around. Most people were gone, just a few stragglers. “Ugh, fine.”

“If you tell me about this girl.” He finished.

I should’ve known.

“No!” I snapped.

“Is she your girlfriend?”

My eyes widened. I had only known Trenton for two days and already he knew that Sam
and I were hooking up. If it had been this obvious for him… did my parents know?

“N-no” I stuttered.

“So you were just making out with a random chick over there?” Trenton asked, nodding
to where Sam and I had just been previously.

“Did you watch?!” I asked, strangely not creeped out by it.

He only smiled guiltily, getting into the driver’s seat.

“I can’t believe you watched us!” I huffed, getting into the passenger’s seat. “That’s
just… weird!”

“It was hot.” He shrugged truthfully.

I made a face, crossing my arms over my chest.

“So she is your girlfriend?”

I sighed, “I wish.”

“Fuck buddy?”

“What?” I asked, not liking the language.

“You know, friend with benefits?” He rephrased.

“Oh” I frowned, not liking the way it was said even though that was exactly what we were.
“We uh… we haven’t gotten that far.”

“I’d love to watch.” Trenton laughed.

I made a face “Ew.”

He held up his finger tips in defense from the steering wheel “Hey, I’m just saying.”

“Still… why would you want to watch something like that?” I shifted ever so slightly away
from him.

He shrugged, “Because it’d be a huge turn on. She’s fucking hot, and you’re not so bad
yourself if you’d let yourself go every once in a while.”

“Please don’t talk about Sam that way.” Irritation was quickly seeping into my voice.

“Oh, so she has a name?”

“Of course she does.”

Trenton laughed, “Sam what?”

“No.” I said firmly “You’re not getting that out of me.”

“Not now at least.” He said more to himself than to me. Though, I knew I was meant to
hear his comment.

“Why are you being friendlier now?” I asked with hopes to change the topic of
discussion.

He shrugged “Maybe you’re not as big of a loser as I first took you to be.”

“And there goes the friendliness” I mumbled.

He chuckled, “So are you a lesbian or bisexual?”

I groaned, “Are we really going to have this discussion?”

“Damn, lesbian, knew it.” Trenton said.

“No, I’m not a lesbian!” I argued. “I’m bisexual.”

“So you like guys too, huh?” He asked casually, “What about your fuck buddy. Bi too?”

I nodded “Please don’t call her that.”

“What? It’s true.”

“Not when we’re just kissing and stuff.”

“What’s the ‘stuff’ then?”

“Just…. Stuff….” I said purposely not elaborating.

“What kind of stuff?”

“Look, can we just talk about something else?” I asked angrily, “I’m not comfortable with
this conversation anymore.”

Trenton laughed at me, causing my face to heat up. I bit my lip and looked away,
patiently waiting for him to stop laughing. It was a few moments before that happened.

“Alright, that was pretty funny.” He said getting a few more chuckles out before calming
down.

“Shut up.” I snapped, surprised at my own malice. I wasn’t usually such an angry
person.

“Oh feisty.” He winked “I bet Sam likes that.”

“I’m not ‘feisty’” I corrected.

He rolled his eyes, pulling into our neighborhood.

“Hey could you just drop me off at the corner?” I asked, suddenly worried.

He shot me a weird look, “Why?”

“I don’t want my mom to see that I didn’t take the bus home.”

“Do you listen to everything she tells you to do?”

I nodded truthfully.

“You have to live a little, Taylor, if you want to have any fun.”
