'Safe' Is Not A Word In My Vocabulary

Chapter 30

Ugh, what was wrong with my bed?

I groaned and tried to roll over. A searing pain shot through my leg, and then through my shoulder I gasped in pain and my eyes fluttered open.

I was still in the cave, I realized.

I tried to sit up and an icy hand stooped me. I froze before realizing it was Bree.

“Stop moving, you’ll hurt yourself,” she whispered, and then eyeing me added “Well, hurt yourself more.” I groaned and fell back, looking down at myself in confusion.

My shoulder was healed, but still soaked in blood; there was a white strip of fabric wrapped around the wound.

I noticed the blonde woman with the tank top who stood beside Bree. She had concern on her face, and wonder.

“I’ve never seen anything heal so fast, there wasn’t much I could do…” The white strip of fabric was from the sweater tied loosely around her waist, I realized.

I turned to Bree.

“What happened? Where’s Damien?” I asked; my voice sounded groggy. Bree looked absentmindedly towards the cave opening.

“Damien was taking the humans to get out of here, including Martha’s two sons and husband. She’s a nurse and was helping us take care of you; you were too weak to be moved so we stayed in the cave.”

I nodded and my head fell limply against the ground. My hand went to my stomach and something nudged me. I smiled at my baby inside me and tried to sit up some.

Martha and Bree helped me and I glared softly at them.

“I think the leg might take a little longer,” Martha said softly, “Although your healing is fast, bones take more time to rebuild than flesh wounds.

Bree said thank you and I did too and Damien came in.

“Your family said they’ll see you at the hotel, and I’ll be sure to escort you there, Martha.” He said painfully.

I looked up from behind them and grinned at my brother. “Day-Day’s back!” I teased smiling he jumped and ran towards me. He hugged me lightly, but forcefully as if I were as breakable as a doll.

I giggled and hugged him back before letting go and groaning.

“How long was I out?” I grumbled trying to stand. The light was fading, but it had been nearly dark when we took out the vamps.

It was morning, I realized in shock.

“About twelve hours, I was about to lose it Cent,” Damien whispered. I hugged him hard, ignoring the pain in my broken leg and sore shoulder.

“Don’t think like that. I’ll never leave you, either of you, you’re my best friends.” I hadn’t meant to be all mushy, but it was fitting at the moment.

All the dramas over and know we can all go home.

I can see Jacob, and apologize for everything. He can have a real explanation this time.
I stumbled to my feet with Damien’s help and Bree’s too.

For some reason, they seemed more comfortable around each other. They both had an arm around me, and they didn’t even care that they were touching.

A definite improvement.

We broke through the surface at around one in the afternoon, no one there to greet us except the forest. Martha breathed the air in deeply and we started hiking.

When we reached a river I broke out of their grip and limped towards it. I washed the blood from my shoulder and hair while Damien went swimming.

Martha washed up too and started thanking us for freeing her. Bree stayed underwater, flaunting her ability not to breathe and I could see the sunlight making her skin sparkle from the lightly rushing water.

We started hiking again and Bree had me ride piggyback this time while Damien escorted Martha home. Bree and I snuck into our room around six o’ clock. Immediately I went to the bed and passed out.

When I woke up in the morning Damien had a mound of food waiting for both of us.

Me ate like animals at first, before slowing down. Bree looked really amused, her red eyes dancing with laughter and her lips pulled near permanently into a smirk.

I glared at her and she turned her attention back to the TV.

Damien couldn’t get us a flight home til tomorrow night so we were stumped on what to do.
Bree had to stay in cause’ of the sun and Damien didn’t want me moving too much.

But he got to go to the beach. How was that fair you ask? Simple; it wasn’t. Me and Bree sat inside with the curtains closed to the amazing view and watched movies.

Eventually we got bored with that too, and I pulled up my iPod.

I cranked it up and took the speakers out, and she danced around with her super speed and hearing. It was entertaining. I had never seen a vampire dance like that except for Emmett, and he was more goofy than he was graceful most of the time.

We joked about not letting Damien back in or about ditching him but we decided to just let him in after we had our fun.

He walked right in that night, oblivious to the thoughts we’d shared, and we burst out laughing when he went to wash the saltwater and sand out of his hair. He was tanner already, and I was seriously jealous.

Even though this was occupying me, some part of me still was worrying. Jacob would’ve figured out by now that I’d lied to him, and he’d be pissed.

I didn’t want to go home and face him, but I also didn’t want to stay here and wonder about how he’d react to my news.

Carlisle would want to check on me too, I knew he was waiting for a call. I just hoped he kept my secret and minded himself around Edward, no pun intended.

My stomach seemed to have a big red target on it and I wondered why Damien hadn’t noticed or said anything yet.

Boys are idiots sometimes I swear.

We had a fun time and I didn’t want to leave.

It was inevitable though, and soon we were in the Port Angeles airport, me limping through the terminals while I tried to regain my strength and Bree sighing in relief when she saw the clouds, and then wincing when she inhaled.

Her eyes were darkening, and I reminded myself to take her to the Cullen’s.

We got our stuff and caught a cab home. Damien shoved him the money and K-9 busted through the front door. He ran and all but tore me out of the car, laughing and yelling about how everyone was going nuts.

He dropped me and Bree sniffed.

“Oh goodie, there are three of you,” she said jokingly. K-9 gave her an odd look and gave me a weirder one.

“Who’s the minina vampira?” he asked grinning. I waved a hand towards her while Damien rolled his eyes. He grabbed the two small suitcases in one hand, pecked my head and went inside.

“Bree, this is K-9. K-9 this vampire girl is Bree Tanner.” He gave me an amused look and I sighed. “Long story, Damien will explain.”

I had places to go.

I knocked on the door anxiously, before walking in.

Carlisle looked up and smiled at me.

“Centhua, your back.” He stated before hugging me.

“I need you check on my leg, I hurt it in Puerto Rico.” He helped me sit on his sofa before moving my sweats up my leg.

“So that’s where you were,” he said absentmindedly, feeling his way up the bone, testing the strength lightly.

I winced a lot, knowing it wasn’t half way healed.

“Hmm, it seems to be healing fine, but I suggest you stay off it for at least a week, I’ll put a temporary plastic on it like Jacob’s so you won’t forget,” He stuttered over Jacob’s name and I winced.

He disappeared and then reappeared quickly, the same stuff Jacob had exactly, was in his hand. I sat twiddling with my thumbs while he got it fitted and I scowled at the white cast and crutches when he was done. Looks like I’ll be in shorts and baggy pants for a while.

When he finished he also checked my stomach and such, and I was relieved, but not surprised to see that my baby was just fine.

He had me schedule a sonogram appointment and I left soon after.

I was able to walk somewhat, the crutches were annoying though, and I ditched them as soon as I got in the car. Bree grinned at me from the driver’s seat and I jumped.

“How did you…” I started before shaking my head. “Glad you’re here,” I muttered grabbing her arm. She sniffed the air, sensed Carlisle and I smirked while towing her back to Carlisle’s office in the hospital.

“Relax, he’s a friend.” We arrived and I knocked again.
“Back already Cent?” Carlisle called when I walked in. He looked up at Bree and confusion swept across his face.

“Who’s this?” he asked standing up.

I smiled and introduced them before explaining Bree’s situation, while also revealing what happened down south. He was very cool about it and allowed Bree the chance to move in with the Cullen’s. She beamed and thanked him and we drove back to my place.

She gathered the few things she had, which wasn’t much and told the boys what was going on. Damien hugged her goodbye and I smiled to see they no longer wanted to kill each other as much.

K-9 gave her a little wave before wrinkling his nose and I grinned before we drove the three miles to the Cullen’s.

Carlisle had already debriefed them and they were waiting for us when we crossed the drive to their house. Bree smiled shyly and Esme greeted her warmly.

Edward, Alice and Emmett introduced themselves before attacking me with question and hugs. I grimaced from the contact, but they didn’t stop.

Rosalie glared at me and stalked into the house. Jasper smiled tentatively and I returned it.

“I love your sweater!” Bree gushed when talking to Alice. “I saw a similar one in the French version of Elle, but there is no comparison.”

Alice smiled brightly at Bree and then me.

It looks like she just found herself a new Barbie.

When I managed to get away, hugging Bree goodbye and promising to talk to her soon, there was only one person on my mind.

I had to tell Jake, but I needed to make a visit first.

Okay, so I was putting it off, but whatever. I would rather figure out from someone else how Jacob was then to just pop in and face his anger.

Edward drove me home, and Damien drove me to La Push. I already hated this cast but I had more on my mind right now.

Damien pulled up outside of Leah’s and she ran out.

“CENT!” she screamed hugging me. I grinned and hugged her back.

“Hey Leah,” I greeted. She blabbered on about where I was and I shushed her. It was Kim who I'd thought had the jabber mouth, but I guessed I deserved all the questions Leah was pelting me with.

We went up to her room, Damien coming too and watching Leah tentatively.

I explained everything that happened, taking quite a long time actually, and she was clearly displeased.

She was quiet for a long time when I was done and I felt there was something she wasn’t telling me.

“What’s up?” I asked when she started biting her lip off. She was silent, but for once the silence was full of meaning and I wasnt the only one who noticed.

Damien sat up in interest and realization dawned on me.

“Jacob left, didn’t he?” I whispered brokenly, knowing the answer but dying for her to deny it.

“The second he could walk again, Carlisle didn’t want him to phase yet but he didn’t care, he just took off.” She said clenching her fists. I winced in pain and she gave me a sympathetic look.

“He was in a lot of pain when you left. He said he needed to ‘get away from it all for a while’ and ran north. He phased to a human the day before yesterday and that was the last time anyone talked to or heard from him.”

I stared at my hands.

“Damien I think you should go,” I said quietly after a minute. “I’ll get home later, I just need to speak with Leah privately first.”

He pecked my forehead and left. Leah looked at me in shock.

“I thought his name was Chris?” she asked and I shook my head.

“His name is Damien, he’s my twin brother, but he’s also my friend Bones. He pretended to be Bones so he could keep me safe, I didn’t know because he also changes his scent and doesn’t talk. He does it so vampires can’t find him and that’s how he was Bella the other day.”

Leah gasped and slapped her head.

“Jacob thought you ran away with him or something! Quil and Embry told him you left and he thought you weren’t coming back!” she hissed and kicked her foot against her wall.
“Stupid, stupid, stupid…” she growled repeatedly, referring to my baby daddy.

“I can’t believe that idiot…” she added huffing and crossing her arms over her chest.

I sighed deeply my heart contracting painfully. “Of course I would’ve come back doesn’t he realize…” Leah stared and I blushed realizing I was talking out loud.

“Realize that you’re in love with him?” she guessed I shook my head.

“No…” I whispered quietly, my hand touching my stomach automatically. “I wish it was that simple.” I whispered Leah looked down at my hand and then back at me. Confusion swept across her face, and then shock.

“I’m pregnant.” I finished sadly.

She cussed under her breath before looking at me.

“Are you serious? You’re pregnant with his kid! He didn’t know and just left! I don’t care how much pain he was in, I’m gonna multiply it.” She said and started shaking. I sighed, the pain starting to break through.

It sounded worse like that.

XxX

I convinced Leah, not to tell him, but to keep it a secret and she drove me home. Damien was out and so was K-9 so she stayed to help me if I needed anything cause’ of my leg and such.

I didn’t like feeling useless and she practically had to tie me to a couch to make me stay. She left about ten minutes before the guys came back, saying something about patrol.

I just hope she can keep a secret as well as Carlisle.
