'Safe' Is Not A Word In My Vocabulary

Chapter 38

Centhua's POV

Whenever I look back on those two months Jacob and I were separated, it always seems different. It was a long time, if you measured it by the time I spent worrying about him, but it was a small amount of time compared to how long I had spent never leaving his side.

It was hard to believe it really happened, and some days I had to convince myself it wasn’t just a sick nightmare.

Time passed quickly, and eventually I even passed my due date. I was terrified but Jacob and Carlisle both kept me sane.

I stirred in my sleep and switched positions. My stomach hurt but I really wanted to sleep again.

The pain subsided and I slept for a while until it came back. After about three hours of this, the pain was only five minutes apart.

That was when I woke up Jacob.

“Jake, my stomach,” I whimpered being hit with another wave of pain. He sat up groggily, but took in my hunched up form on the bed and blinked a few times to wake himself up.

I waited for a while until it subsided. Jacob placed a hand over mine, wide awake, before getting up to get dressed.

I looked at the clock to see it wasn’t even six yet.

I marked the time so I knew when another contraction would hit and then I got up to get dressed. Jacob was already ready, my cell in his hand while he talked to Carlisle.

I was a bit dazed when I slid on a t-shirt and a pair of shorts, like none of this was really happening.

“Cent?” Jacob asked, causing me to look up, he had concern on his face as he searched my eyes. “You okay?” he asked closing the distance between us and cradling my face in his hands.

I just nodded and smiled nervously. He pecked my nose and then my lips quickly, looking in my eyes in that same intense way that he did when he first told me he loved me.

“You’ll be okay, I’m here,” He whispered, kissing me again “I promise.”

His choice of words made me smile, and then wince as another onslaught of pain hit my side. He grabbed, me when I stumbled a few steps and I whimpered.

After a few minutes it subsided and I was able to get out to Jake’s car, which was an Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione that I gave him for his birthday a week ago.

It wasn’t as conspicuous as the rabbit, but it was faster, and right now Jacob obviously felt like breaking some serious speed laws.

Four miles and we reached the front of the Cullen’s drive, Jacob slowed down at that point and the pain faded again.

Carlisle had me upstairs, in a hospital gown, and on a bed by the time the next contractions hit only this time, my water broke.

“Shit,” I growled when a warm liquid rushed down my legs.

I was panting, holding my sides while a thin sheen of sweat covered my face. Jacob looked a little helpless just standing there and I told him to leave.

“No,” he said defiantly, and another pain hit me in a different spot. I screamed a little but kept my eyes on him.

“God-dammit Jake, please.” The words were rushed and heavy because I was talking through the pain, but that only seemed to get the point across more.

“No,” he said, but less forcefully than before.

“Jacob,” Carlisle’s voice cut in, “I think it best for you to do what she wants right now.” Jacob, giving another helpless look, walked slowly backwards before leaving.

Jacob’s POV

The next couple of hours were torture.

I could clearly hear every breath she took, and every scream.

Damien and K-9 had showed up about two hours after I got here, and I barely noticed them. Every time she cried out I hated myself a little more, and I refused to listen to their efforts to cheer me up.

“Jake, buddy, it’s worse being in there, trust me.” Damien said, clapping me on the shoulder. I ignored him, and buried my face in my hands while I tried not to think of all the things that could go wrong.

12 hours went by, and Cent was screaming more and more often.

No wonder she sent me out.

Cent screamed once, the sound ringing out for a long time when I pressed my hands over my ears in pain. Not from the noise, but from the fact that I did that to her.

It didn’t work, so I dropped them, but instead of more screaming I heard crying, a tiny heartbeat, and panting.

Centhua’s POV

“Push,” Carlisle urged, but he didn’t shout it. I screamed again and did as I was told. A few minutes later, crying was heard as I fell back against the hospital bed.

I was breathing heavily, and my hold body felt like lead but it was over, and I took comfort in that fact.

Jacob’s POV

Carlisle peaked his head out only a few minutes later. I probably looked like a crazy person, but I didn’t care.

“Your son is doing fine, and Centhua as well,” were the first words out of his mouth, causing a huge weight to be lifted off my shoulders and a huge sigh to leave my mouth.

Damien and K-9 clapped me on the shoulder and I smiled a small smile. “You can go see her now, but Jacob first,” Carlisle said walking off somewhere. I jumped up and walked heavily over to the door that he’d shut behind him, and opened it.

The first thing I noticed, was Centhua.

She looked tired and brutally exhausted, but she still managed to have happiness radiating from her entire form as she stared at a little blanket wrapped bundle in her arms.

I followed her gaze, edging forward automatically and getting my first good look at my son.

He was a tiny thing, although a little bigger than a new born since he had the wolf gene. His little thumb curled around one of Cent’s fingers while he whimpered.

He had my color hair, as far as I could tell, but when I stroked it with my thumb it was Cent’s texture. He matched my temperature exactly.

His skin was a mixture of Cent’s paleness and my reddish tint. He had her nose, and my mouth.

I stroked his hair again and felt Cent’s gaze on me.

I met her eyes and she was smiling in a way that made my heart stutter for a second. I’d only ever seen her looking like that twice, the first when I proposed, and when I saw for the first time in months at the airport.

The baby whined, catching my attention and I looked down at him to see his eyes open heavily.

I blinked in surprise, and then grinned huge.

He had my eyes.
