The "Other Girl"

"How was school?"

Dad asks when I get home.
“Great,” I say, a stupid smile on my face.
He looks up from his newspaper and asks,
“Was it great because of a boy?”
I roll my eyes.
“You know that you’re not allowed to
Date until after you’re married,”
He reminds me for the hundredth time.
“That’s what Nonno always told me,”
He adds.

I want to tell my dad that
Things are different these days.
Dinosaurs don’t roam the earth anymore,
And you don’t have to learn Morse code
To send a message to someone.
But I just smile and say,
“I know Dad,”
And I go to my room to do “homework.”
But instead, I’m dialing Aubrey’s number
As fast as humanly possible.
