Who Knew.

You're Complicated...

I watched in awe as she grinned down at him before tackling him to the ground; for old people they were really active. She showered him in kisses and I felt Gerard wrap his arms around my waist and nuzzle into my neck. If his grandma could find love twice in life why couldn’t I? Well, I already have found it twice, just so happens to be with the same person.

“Gee! I’m engaged!!”

“I know, I was there grandma.”

She smacked him playfully in the arm and pulled him in for a hug before grabbing me and spinning around with me. I couldn’t help but laugh and join in her excitement. We ended up leaving the fair and heading to IHOP for a celebration. Gerard and I were dropped off so we didn’t have to worry about a vehicle and we tagged along with grandma and Joe.

We ended up going to a midnight movie; some low rated film that still made a few bucks—I fell asleep during it. We finally made it to IHOP about 4am. We ended up killing two hours there, talking about nonsense and about 6:05am when we decided we’d been out long enough, grandma decided she wanted to go the courthouse and get married first thing.

I hoped I could be at least as half as spontaneous as this woman is; getting married the next day to the man she loves after being engaged not even twenty-four hours! Gee and me had no option but to tag along. She went into the restroom at a gas station on the way to the courthouse, fixed her hair and make-up and Joe tried to fix his hair; Gerard and I did the best we could to look decent.

At 7:00am Gee and I followed grandma and Joe into the courthouse and they demanded they get married this instant. We waited an hour and a half; I dozed off a few times—nudged awake by grandma when the time finally came to be married. We were approached by a small man in a nice three piece suit and slightly bald with outstanding white hair atop his head.

“Good morning, what a morning it is. Come with me and we’ll get you hitched in no time.”

He turned and we walked into a small ‘chapel’ off to the side. It held about six small benches; Gerard and I sat in the first. We held hands and listened as the five minute ‘ceremony’ took place. Joe asked that Gee and I be the witnesses seeing as we were the only other two people there; grandma’s face was full of happiness. Her smile was contagious and she giggled like a school girl once we got outside.

Joe pulled out front of Gerard’s house, his mother came barging out front, skidding to a halt when she recognized who was in the car with us.

“Do you have any idea what time it is? It’s Monday morning, you left the house Sunday afternoon. No note, no message, nothing. Frank’s parents have been calling all night, of course your cell phones would be at home. Get inside right now, I swear Gerard Arthur, if I’m late because of you, so help you when I get home tonight.”

“We got married! That’s why they were out so late. We were ambushed at the fair and then Joe purposed and then I decided I wanted to see a movie and then we went to IHOP and then we just got married. They were safe Donna, no need to—“

“He’s my son, not yours. Last time he didn’t come home the night after the fair, well…I couldn’t help but to let the worst come to my mind. Congratulations.”

She turned and walked into the dark house and upstairs. I followed Gerard down into his room and sat tentatively on his bed. I was exhausted; an all night-er with a few small naps in between wears you out. Gerard was standing near his dresser, a small smile playing on his lips; he looked tired but still so beautiful. His hair was falling just the right way into his eyes as he looked over at me.

I put my arms out as if to say come here, he did, walking into my embrace. I pulled him onto me as I lay back on his bed.

“Let’s just sleep Gee, I’m sleepy and you’re comfy.”

He chuckled and nodded. Shifting so he was comfortable as I cuddle into him; I let his smell—that smell that’s so distinctly him take over my senses as I drifted into a peaceful sleep in his arms.
