My mother and Cheyenne were already home when I got back. They were sitting on the living room couch together, watching some reality show. I timidly shuffled over, feeling like a person randomly painted into a perfect family portrait. They seemed so calm and relaxed with one another; I must admit that I was jealous at how close they were. I could never be that close with my mother, or even my father.

“Mom,” I said. They both snapped towards me, looking stunned for a moment. “I’m... I’m going to some dinner with my friends and their parents tonight.” There was no reason in her knowing, but I wanted to let her know anyway.

My mother gave me a warm smile. “Really, now? Well, enjoy yourself, Graham. Just have fun, okay?” She gave me an intense look. I couldn’t help but smile and nod, like we shared a special bond no one else knew of. Cheyenne looked semi-confused, but turned back around and watched the T.V. anyway.

I went upstairs to my room.

I felt a little bit better.
