Invisible

New

There's a new kid
in my class.
I sit beside Eve
She asked - or ordered -
me to.
I didn't mind

"Oh my god,"
she whispers
in my ear.
"He's hot!"
I giggle.
She takes this as
an agreement
which it is

but something's making me scared,
something so eerily familiar.

I ignore it
and listen as the teacher
introduces him,
"This is Evan Lulah.
Would you like to
tell us about
yourself, Evan?"
"Well, I'm not a fan
of his last name,"
Eve whispers,
"but I do like
his first name."

I poke her
"Shut up!"
I hiss
jokingly.

He looks reluctant but begins to talk.
His voice washes over me,
like a river washing over rocks.

His dirty blonde hair falls over his face;
cccccsomeone needs a haircut
as he tells us that his family's been
travelling and decided to settle
down here.

He looks up
and I meet his eyes.
A flush darkens
my cheeks.

I look away
thinking,
I'm invisible!

He
shouldn't
look
at
me

or maybe he should.
