Tell Me That You're Mine

Hidden Trail

"So, you live around here?" Kendall asked. We were walking along the dirt path behind the ceremony building. There were trees on both sides, opening only for the path, which was just wide enough for two people to walk side by side comfortably. Squirrels scattered up and down the trees, birds flew in the treetops, and every now and then a lizard or frog would appear. I hadn't even known this trail was here until we snuck out the back of the building so Kendall wouldn't get surrounded by his fans and never be able to leave. I smiled at the thought of us sneaking out the back door. James had helped us, calling out, "Who wants a hug and an autograph!?" Once everyone's attention was focused on James and his smile, we made our way to the back and out the door with nobody noticing. I felt rather successful, and told myself mentally that I'd have to thank James, if I ever talked to him again.
"Uhh, yeah about fifteen minutes from here." I answered. He nodded.
"Sometimes being in a band and moving places all the time sucks when all you want is to be home." He smiled sadly. I felt the need to comfort him somehow.
"But at least you have the guys to keep you company, right?" I hoped.
"Yeah, they're great. They do make it more bearable to be away from home." He looked at me apologetically. "I’m sorry I’m boring you with all this sad talk." He laughed. "Why did you come to this thing anyway?" He gestured back towards the building we were getting farther and farther away from.
"My mom made me come.’ You need to support your sister!'" I mimicked my mom, the finger pointing and all. He laughed out loud.
"You did that so well!" He was leaned over laughing, his hands on his knees and his eyes tearing up from laughing so hard.
"Was that really that funny?" I laughed. Seeing him laughing so hard made me start laughing. And the laughing escalated. Soon we were both sitting on the dirt floor, laughing uncontrollably.
"Why...are...we....still...laughing?" Kendall asked when he could catch his breath long enough to speak.
"I don’t know!" I laughed, taking a deep breath to try to stop laughing. Kendall calmed himself enough to stand up. His laughter subsided.
"C'mon, let's go." He smiled, holding his hand out to help me off the floor. I took it and he helped me up with no trouble.
"Alright, how long is this trail?" He asked after we started walking again. I shrugged.
"I didn’t even know this was here before today."
"Okay, I guess." He chuckled. He slid his hands into his pockets, still walking.
"Hmmm, I wanna get to know you better." He looked at me sideways. "20 questions?"
I smirked. "Sure. You first."
"Oh man, alright." He ran his hand through his hair and smiled. "umm, how old are you?" He decided.
"Oh, uhh, eighteen." I looked at the floor. He nodded.
"Your turn." He smirked.
"Oh, I don't know." I groaned. "Let’s go with a simple question...what’s your favorite...baseball team?" I shrugged.
"Easy. LA Dodgers." He smiled.
"Whaaat!? Me too!" I stopped and threw my hands up.
"Why?" He laughed. "I went to California on vacation a couple years ago and the first pro baseball game I ever saw was the Dodgers playing the Orioles. We sat to the left of the dodger's dugout, right at the fence. Like, right there. They came out before every inning and talked to us and they were just really nice. Oh, and they won." I smiled. He just laughed. "Your turn." I concluded. We were still walking down the mysterious trail. Luckily it was still pretty light outside so we could see where we were going.
"Hmmm, what do you want to do in the future?"
"No, you're gonna laugh at me." I shook my head.
"No I won’t!" He laughed."I promise." He looked at me solemnly.
"Ughh, fine. I want to move to California and do something along the lines of making music videos." I looked at my manicured toes now covered in dirt from the trail.
"Why would I laugh at you for that?" He asked me seriously.
"I don’t know," I laughed, embarrassed. "Okay, my turn." I said, just to get off the topic. He accepted the distraction easily enough.
"So...what's the question?" He asked when I was silent for a few minutes, only concentrating on walking.
"Oh!" I laughed. "Umm, what's your favorite thing about performing everywhere?"
He thought on that for a few minutes before answering.
"It's probably a tie between being able to travel around and meeting so many new people."
"Good answer. Now your turn."
"Okay, what’s your favorite-" he stopped talking so I looked up from my feet. The ground had gotten pretty rocky and I really didn’t want to fall on my face so I kept my eyes on the ground. I was successful so far. But I didn’t notice the trees beginning to thin and the path coming to an end. The path had led to a body of water. A lake, actually. The path ended and sand began, stretching for a couple hundred feet on either side of the opening. I slipped my flip flops off so I could dig my toes into the beachy white sand. There were a few lazy chairs set up on our right, which I followed Kendall over to. He gestured for me to sit in the closest chair and he plopped down in the one next to it. These were the low types of chairs that if you were sitting in the water your whole butt would be soaked. I looked out at the water and noticed that the sun was reflecting off of it in such a pretty way that I couldn’t help but stare. Somebody had fixed up this
beach. There were a couple palm trees here and there and tiki lanterns everywhere.
"You really didn’t know about this at all?" Kendall asked.
"No, I had no idea this was here." I laughed.
"Okay, but you’re not using this to avoid your next question. Who is your biggest famous guy crush?" he smirked.
"Oh goodness. Do you really want to know??" I laughed and I could tell my cheeks were turning red.
"Yes! Especially because you're blushing!"
"Okay...Zac Efron." I said quickly. It was true, until tonight.
"What? Why?" He laughed.
"Uhhh, because he's freaking gorgeous!" I looked at him now, all the blush gone from my cheeks.
"What's his best quality?" He challenged.
"Um, his eyes? His smile? His abs? His hair!?" Nobody can win this fight against me.
"Okay, what’s your one redeeming quality in a guy?"
"Their sense of humor and whether or not they can make me laugh, it’s a tie."
"Physical quality?"
"Eyes...and hair. I can’t decide." Then I realized, "Dude, that was like your fourth question in a row!" I laughed. I laid my head back on the headrest. I could hear Kendall laughing but didn’t need to open my eyes to know he was laughing at me.
"Let's go swimming." I heard Kendall say. I didn’t reply in any way, my eyes were still closed. And then I heard the chair next to me creak. My eyes popped open.
"Are you serious? You have no idea what’s in that water! There could be an alligator waiting right there," I pointed where the water met the sand. "To eat you alive!" I finished. I was sitting up in my chair now, my eyes wide.
"Are you serious?" He smirked.
"Yes!" I couldn’t help but laugh at the expression on his face.
"Well i'm going, and you're coming with me." He started to walk towards me and I shrieked. I pushed myself all the way back in my chair and drew my knees to my chin.
"NOOO!" I screamed. He didn’t stop advancing on me. We were both laughing, but he knew he was much stronger than me and he would win this easily. He reached me and scooped me up, his left arm supporting my lower back and his right arm holding up the back of my knees. I thrashed around, kicking my legs up and down, flailing the arm that wasn’t bracing myself around his neck.
"Kendall!" I screeched.
I kept thrashing, and about halfway to the water he tripped in the sand. He fell forward, and before he could react, both of us were in the sand, laughing uncontrollably. He was on top of me, his arms holding himself up on either side of me. Our laughing slowed, and we stared at each other for the longest time, not saying anything. After a while, his head started leaning towards mine, and my hands found the back of his neck.

"Drop everything now,
meet me in the pourin’ rain,
kiss me on the sidewalk,
take away the pain,
cause I see sparks fly,
whenever you smile."

I groaned. Kendall laughed once and rolled from on top of me to lay by my side.
"Hello?" I said, answering my phone defeatedly.
"Where are you!?" My mom yelled into the phone.
"I walked down this trail I found, why?"
"Sydney! You didn’t tell anyone where you were going or anything!" She yelled.
"Okay, sorry mom." I said.
"We're leaving soon, so come back to the building, please." She sighed.
"Fine mom, bye." I pushed the end call button on my phone and leaned my head back in the sand and closed my eyes.
"C'mon, let’s go." I heard Kendall mumble. I opened my eyes and he was standing up, looking at me with a smirk.
I groaned again and pushed myself off the soft sand. I stood up next to Kendall and we started walking without talking. He seemed a bit more shy on the way back. I wondered if I should bring up the fact that we had almost just kissed, but I decided not to.
“Hey,” He said now that we were almost back to the building. I looked at him quickly. “Can I call you?”
I smiled. “Of course.” He handed me his phone, which I put my number in under- Sydney (:
“Alright, we’re here.” He sighed. We had reached the opening of the trail, and people were getting into their cars. A bus that I’m guessing was btr’s was parked behind the building, and Kendall pointed at it.
“There’s my ride.” He chuckled.
“Alright, see you later?” I asked hopefully.
“See you later.” He smiled. He bent down and kissed my forehead. I closed my eyes, smiling. If only this second could last forever.
