I Don't Want To Solve Your Problems, I Have My Own

My entire body ached, and I groaned as I stumbled into my dark apartment. The Rangers had delivered a solid whooping, and there were only three things I wanted right now: a beer, a bed, and Ashley Pritchard. “Oh…he really got you good,” she whispered. I frowned, and immediately regretted it because a small trickle of blood ran down from my split lip. Ashley took a tissue out of the box on the coffee table and dabbed at the blood before kissing my lips lightly too.

“I hate Avery,” I growled.

“Don’t we all?” she chuckled before pulling me down so that I was leaning against her. I relaxed into her lap and she played with my hair, her fingers dancing through my curls. After a while, I finished my beer, and she draped her arms around my neck and perched her chin on the top of my head.

“Evgeni?” she asked.

“Hmm?”

“I passed my math final,” she said. I could hear the smile in her voice.

“That’s great!” I cheered.

“You helped me,” she said quietly.

“I did what any friend would do,” I mumbled.

“Are we really just friends?” she asked. Her voice was slightly disappointed.

“What you mean?” I asked.

“I stay home and wait for you, I kiss your bruises, I play with your hair…I just don’t get it,” she sighed. I felt my heart sink. I knew this moment would come. I knew that it would get to the point where I either had to get over my fears, or say goodbye to the only woman who had treated me right.

“Ashley…I am just scared,” I finally croaked.

“Scared of what?” she asked.

“Commitment…getting hurt…” I mumbled.

“Evgeni…Evgeni look at me,” she demanded. I sat up and turned so that I was facing her, and she cupped my face in her hands.

“Evgeni Vladimirovich Malkin, I will never ever hurt you. I swear,” she whispered, staring directly into my eyes. I could see the honesty and passion sparkling in her deep blue eyes. Something in my gut told me to trust her, so I did the scariest thing I had ever done, and kissed her.

“I swear too,” I whispered. She grinned widely and kissed me back. The kiss was so gentle that it frustrated me, even though I knew she was just trying to avoid hurting my lip again. I kissed her more firmly and she melted into my chest, responding to my kiss with an equal amount of fervor. “Positive,” I said.
