Who Would Have Thought?

Chapter 3

“That was amazing! We were so close to winning!” I couldn’t help but laugh at the girl nearly seven months my junior and her excitement as we took the same elevator down.

“It’s alright, Roxy. Another win means we’re still in the running for clinching a spot, so don’t complain.” I stuck my tongue out at her, as the contraption dinged, and began opening to the lower level. Nodding to the security officers who allowed us entry earlier, we quickly slipped behind the heavy black curtain, separating the rest of the world from the locker rooms.

Considering we had been the last people to leave their seats, I wasn’t surprised to see several of the media leaving the area, talking under mumbled breaths into recording devices, others scribbling ferociously onto their notepads. We rounded the corner, to see one Star and two Avs players talking casually amoungst each other.

Approaching, I cleared my throat, unable to stop grinning at the sight in front of me. This was certainly a surprise, one even I didn’t know about. “Ladies, it’s lovely to see you again.” I saw Kelsey waving, out of the corner of my eye, but Roxy was only standing there, trying not to make eye contact with the three men in front of us.

Paul Stasny, the one who greeted us, extended his hand to Kelsey, as Kari began to speak, not giving the brunette to his right, a moment to talk. Even though his lips had been sealed since we arrived. “Would you guys like to join us for dinner? Matt suggested a great seafood place near downtown Denver.”

I nudged Kari’s foot with my own, under the table, only for him to reach over and lightly tickle me incessantly. Sliding it away, I fought to keep a small smile on my face, as we waiting for the waitress to come to the table the six of us resided at.

Paul sat to my left, who was talking quietly with Kelsey, the duo occasionally letting out a laugh here or there. Matt sat across from me, Roxy sitting between him and Kari, and neither of them talking. I nodded to the pair, Kari looking over at them.

He sighed, glancing back to me, before looking back to his nearly-empty glass of Coke. However, it was quickly retrieved by a passing waitress. “I’ll get you a fresh one, sir.” He only nodded in response, uttering a small ‘thank you’, before turning to me.

“Why won’t he talk to her?” I only shrugged, looking over to my friend, and her companion.

“I have no id-..” “WATCH OUT!” I was quickly cut off by the waitress screeching, colliding with a waiter who held a tray full of food, both of them quickly dumping their contents onto Matt and Roxy. Despite the dismal situation, I couldn’t help but utter a laugh.

They both kind of sat there, looking at each other, both drenched in Coke and hushpuppies. Matt stood up, offering his hand to Roxanne, and quickly pulling her towards the door, and out of our view. It was only a matter of seconds before Kelsey and I were giggling. Matt would take care of her.

Looking around, long after our food had gotten to the table in one piece, Roxy and Matt had yet to return. I poked Kari, asking if he had seen them. We were only waiting on Kelsey and Paul, who had rarely left their conversation to acknowledge the rest of the world. “No idea. Stastny, where’s your rookie at?”

He snapped his head towards up, pulling out his phone and handing it to me, before turning back to Kelsey. I opened the blackberry, and opened the new text message from Matt. “They went to get ice cream.”

“Did you not like the restaurant?” Matt held open the door to the small creamery, which was only a 6 minute walk from the seafood restaurant. Despite being covered in the sticky coke syrup, the hushpuppy crumbs dusted off rather easily, leaving them somewhat cleaner than how they had left the establishment.

Roxy fumbled with her hands inside of her jacket pockets. Even though it was April, that didn’t prevent the chilly Colorado nights. “I didn’t really grow up around that kind of food, so didn’t really develop a taste for it.”

He smiled at the girl in front of him, as he followed her into the building. Stepping up to the elderly gentleman at the glass, he turned to Roxy. “What kind of ice cream would you like?”

He watched her scale the flavours, before answering him again. “Mint chocolate chip is my favourite.” His jaw nearly dropped to the cold tile floor. In his time playing hockey, he had never met another girl who actually enjoyed mint chocolate chip.

“No way, mine too!” His face broke out into a smile, as he relayed the order to the man, who looked absolutely smitten with the boy and girl who walked into his parlour.

Our faces were glued to the Starbucks glass, as we watched Roxy and Matt talk for nearly an hour, laughing consistently at whatever the other was saying. “What are they doing?” Kelsey jumped up and down next to me, Paul trying to look over Kari’s frame.

“Shush! They’re getting ready to come out!” Kelsey leaned over me, trying to view our friend that was coming out of the ice cream shop, and began walking into our direction.

“Sit down! They are coming this way!” Kari and I shuffled back normally into our ends of the booth, trying to hide our smiles and natural, as a soft bell chimed, Roxy and Matt entering the coffee shop.

“Hey guys! Sorry we left you there, but we decided to head elsewhere.” I looked up to Roxy, who held a pink tinge to her cheeks. Their hands were intertwined, and both looked quite comfortable. “Anyways, Kelsey, you and Roxy are welcome to stay until the end of the season Saturday, when we play Edmonton. If you don’t have anything else to do, that is.”

“We’d love to!” Kelsey beamed, before hugging Paul around his neck tightly, as he returned the hug. “Wait, what about Lauren?”

I looked up at her, only for Kari to grab my hand. “We’ve got that taken care of.” I felt my face turn as red as a tomato, as Paul and Kelsey stood up to join Matt and Roxy. Kari, Matt, and Paul shook hands, as I hugged Kelsey and Roxy for a few moments. I could only hope it had been a memorable spring break for them.

“Good luck against Minnesota.”

Matt pulled Roxy out of the shop before the others could follow, and pulled her into a hug, wrapping his arms around her waist. “Did you have a nice time tonight?”

“I did. Thank you for inviting us.” She smiled, as Kelsey and Paul’s laughter could be heard through the glass. Matt leaned forward, as though he might be caught with his hand in the cookie jar, and pressedhis lips to her cheek.

“I’m glad.” Letting go, as they waited for the others to come out, Roxy’s phone vibrated. She quickly opened it, to see a text from Lauren.

Now what were you saying about them never seeing you again? :)
