Change

We met at a dump. He was disposing of canvases smeared with a variety of substances, from paint to shampoo. This young man had a curious look about him, floppy brown hair, draping over his hazel eyes. He peered into my car boot in an attempt to find out what I was trying to throw away. I saw a pirate ship, a spy base, a lookout, a ladder. All he saw were planks of worn teak wood with crooked nails through it.

Those wooden planks were my childhood.

We talked, about our disposed items. He told me he wanted to slow down, pay attention to detail, not rush through. He no longer wanted an unclear smear as his life.
I told him I was sick of being held down, imprisoned by uniformity. I wanted to be uprooted from it. Break free.

There was an eerie silence as we made deep eye contact. His hazel eyes were burning holes in my own. That was when I realised; he had something I wanted, and I was going to do anything to have it.
