Fake a Heartbreak

o23. Run scared

Viktoria's POV

"What the hell does mom want now?" I wondered out loud. She was rarely ever around and almost never pulled me out of school for anything, when I was at school I wasn't her problem. That's how she liked it. I made my way down the school hallway and into the office. I stepped inside and walked up to the front desk, leaning my arms onto it and receiving a fake-ass smile from the lady behind the desk.

"You must be miss Vance." She said, her 80's haircut catching my full attention. All I could do was nod in reply to her question.

"Well, your mother is waiting for you outside the building." She said, handing me a yellow piece of paper to signify that I had been signed out for the rest of the day. She smiled and lost interest in me, returning her almost frightening gaze back to her computer screen. I fixed the strap on my messenger bag and left the office, making my way out of the dark hallway into the bright light outside. I looked around, not a car or my mother in sight. I made my way across the street to get out of the sun by sitting under a large tree. The cool grass was pleasant on the backs of my legs as I stretched them out on the grass, enjoying the rare peace of the moment.

Suddenly a pair of arms wrapped around me, startling me and causing me to instinctively push away and turn around to see what it was. Lashawna was crouched over by where I once sat, a devilish smile taking over her beautiful face. She giggled and put a look of childish sympathy on for me, walking over and wrapping her arms around me,

"Oh poor Vikki, I'm sorry." I didn't know if I should believe her. She had a long history of lying to me so I just pushed it aside.

"What are you doing out here?" I asked, curious of why she wasn't in class where she should have been.

"I skipped." She replied with a smile, causing me to smile back as a reflex. Her smiles were like a virus, once she's got it...everyone eventually gets it. I sat back down on the grass, my heart still pounding in my chest from her sneak attack. I looked at the road, waiting for a car to pull up and for my mother to step out. Lashawna sat behind me, making me a little suspicious. I changed my attention to a blue car pulling up the street, it parked in front of the school, but no mom. I sighed, coming to the conclusion that I was probably gonna be here for a while. While my guard was down a pair of hands grabbed my shoulder causing my elbow to fly back in fright as I jolted up once again. I turned around quickly, feeling stupid for letting my guard down. Lashawna was on the grass, clutching her stomach a bit. I couldn't help but chuckle awkwardly as I felt a self satisfaction for hurting her a little like she has hurt me in the past.

"VIKKI." She growled angrily, filling me with fear, I'd heard that anger in her voice before. She lunged at me twisting me over in the air causing my face to collide with the hard ground. I felt a heavy weight in the middle of my back, making it harder and harder for me to breath. Her hands grasped my arms yanking them behind my back causing a searing pain to tear through me.

"OUCH! P-Please, stop!" I cried out, the pain becoming worse and worse with each passing second. I pleaded to her again with no avail. My eyes began to sting as I tried to flatten my back a little to stop the pain, only causing more for me. The pain was unbearable, I couldn't breath and a lone tear was now threatening to make it's way down my face. I decided to try one more time, pleading pathetically as the tear fell down my cheek. Suddenly the pain stopped as the weight was lifted from my back, letting me breath once again. I laid there for a second, waiting for the pain to pass and my breathing to return to something that felt like normal.

"I'm sorry!" Lashawna yelled, backing away from me. My eyes never leaving the ground as one thought ran through my head.

RUN

I obeyed, getting up and letting my feet carry me away as I ran as far and fast as I could, not checking behind me to see if she was following.

My feet carried me to the park by the lake before they gave out, sending my knees flying onto the grass. My chest and stomach stung from running, my lungs were working overtime to restore my normal breathing pattern. As soon as my breathing was normal I crawled to the nearby tree that overhangs the lake, looking like something straight out of 'Dawsons Creek'. I leaned against the trunk of the tree, my eyes glued to the water, sparkling in the last few beats of the sun. I always loved the waterfront.

'I'll sleep here tonight.'I told myself. My mother probably wouldn't be home tonight anyway. My thoughts were interrupted by my stomach growling, reminding me that I still had to eat today. I pulled my worn out wallet out of my pocket, revealing 10$ in it's folds. I dropped my bag onto the grass by the tree, almost positive that no one would find it and set of to get some food to silence my complaining stomach.
