Something to Believe

28.

“Of course.” Cara said, as she sat down at the round table in the ballroom. Her table was right next to Chelsy and Harry’s. Harry stared right at her.

“We can ask to be moved if you want to.” Collin suggested.

“No, it’s quite alright. I don’t want to start a ruckus.” She said. They toured around the new music wing and the new auditorium; after that, they proceeded to the ballroom for the
luncheon where they would be serenaded by the music students.

The first course began and it started the music. The first piece was a Debussy, and one of Cara’s favorites. She smiled and clapped as the piece was finished.

Collin growled.

“What is it now?” Cara asked.

“I don’t like how he’s staring.” Collin whispered.

“Oh, can you just hush up and enjoy the music?” Natalie scolded.

“She’s got a point, mate. Ignore him. He’s not worth our time.” Roger said.

Collin sighed and settled back down in his seat. “I guess you’re right.”

They went back to eating; eventually, it was after dessert and they had changed from classical music to some of the students’ favorites.

A tiny girl walked up to the mic. “Hello, my name is Alexandra Warner and I will be singing Back to Black, by Amy Winehouse.” She said. The opening melody began, and the girl started swaying her hips. She opened her mouth; she had a big voice.

Cara turned her head slightly to see Chelsy staring at her. She whispered into Harry’s ear, and then kissed his cheek. She turned back to Cara, swinging her wine glass as if she were challenging her.

Cara turned away, irked. How Harry could just sit there, take back the girl who broke his heart…it was maddening. She couldn’t understand how he could still love her after everything she put him through.

“Cara, you okay?” Collin whispered.

“Yeah, I’m fine.” She said, throwing on a fake smile.

After that song, two guys with a guitar got up on the makeshift stage.

“Hello, I’m Nick Dalton and this is James Casey. We will be performing Something Good Can Work by Two Door Cinema Club.” He said.

Cara froze up and turned her head slowly. As if he was reading her mind, Harry was staring at her with an open mouth.

“Lets make this happen girl, you’re gonna show the world something good can work and it can work for you.” The duo sang.

Memories flooded Cara’s mind; she remembered coming home to an empty house, chicken in the stove, and Harry standing in the sitting room playing the CD.

Harry turned. “Oh, Cara…Kate sent me a CD.” He said plainly.

“Kate…as in Catherine Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge?” she asked.

Harry nodded. “Of course, silly…she is my sister in law.”

Cara walked forward. “And she sent you a Two Door Cinema Club CD?”

Harry nodded. “Yes, I’m fairly new to them…do you know them?”

Cara scoffed. “Well they’re only my favorite band.”

“Can you pick out a good song then?” Harry asked.

“They’re all good songs.” She stated.

Harry cocked his head. “But show me one you like.”

Cara took the remote and put it on Something Good Can Work.

Harry smiled and took her hands. “Come on, dance with me.”

Cara laughed as Harry wiggled his hips. She started to join him in dancing. Harry spun her around and she glided over the floor, collapsing into Harry.

The song changed to I Can Talk, and Harry started shuffling back and forth. He placed her hands on her hips and she strung her arms around his neck. It had been a long time since she had that much fun.

“I didn’t know you were much of a dancer.” She smirked.

Harry laughed sheepishly. “To be honest, I really don’t dance.”

Cara felt her lip quivering.

“What’s wrong?” Collin asked.

“No, nothing…I just…I’ll be right back.” She said, getting up. She quickly walked out of the room and to the bathroom. Sure enough, her mascara had started to smudge. She pulled out a tube of mascara from her purse and fixed it. After washing her hands, she walked out of the bathroom.

“What’s wrong?”

“Collin, I told you, nothing’s wrong.” She snapped.

“I’m not Collin.”
