Crossroads

Three

Lucinda woke up in a white room with Matt sitting right next to her the next day. She looked around confused then all of the memories of the attack came back to her.

“Hey, you’re awake.” Matt grinned.

Lucinda stared at him for a second before remembering that he was the guy that saved her, “Yeah I guess. Where am I?”

“Phoenix, Arizona.” He stated.

She looked around and groaned when she saw the bandages on her, “I can’t pay for any of this.”

“That’s why I did.” Matt cut her off before she could start rambling.

Lucinda stared at him with shocked eyes, “What? Why? You didn’t have to I have money…”

She trailed off remembering that she was mugged. Then quickly spoke up.

“Please tell me there was a piece of paper in my pocket.”

Matt nodded and reached into his jacket pocket to pull out the folded a tad bit dirty piece of paper. I quickly unfolded it and smiled when I saw the adorable drawing that Jacob had drawn for me.

“Did you draw that?” matt asked looking at the picture.

Lucinda shook her head no, “My little brother did.”

Matt nodded then spoke, “What’d you say your name was again? Last night you said Lucy in the sky with diamonds.”

She laughed softly, “It’s Lucinda, Lucinda Hall.”

“Nice to meet you Lucinda. I’m Matthew Sanders but I’d like it if you called me Matt instead.” His dimples popped out when he grinned down at her.

“Well then Matt, I’d like it better if you called me Lucy.”

The door opened and a doctor walked in, “Look who’s finally awake. Let’s see you’re all clear to go but I think it would be best for you to stay with your boyfriend until you are recovered fully. I few months of physically therapy and you should be just fine. When you’re ready sign out at the front office.”

He soon turned around and left before Lucinda could explain that Matt wasn’t her boyfriend.

“Why does he think you’re my boyfriend?” She asked with a confused look.

Matt smiled, “Well to get you on my bill so I could pay I had to tell them that you were my girlfriend.”

Lucinda made a face then nodded. Matt stood up and walked over to the chair a few feet away from the bed to grab a sack. He handed Lucinda the sack and pointed towards the bathroom.

“I got you some clothes, I’ll wait outside so you can change.”

Lucinda slowly got out of the bed and limped towards the bathroom to change. She couldn’t believe that she had been mugged and met a genuinely nice guy.

When she walked back out into the room Lucinda gave Matt a weird look, “How did you know what size I wore?”

“I checked the tags on you’re clothes but they were all ripped up a lot so the hospital threw them away.”

She ran my fingers through her hair then watched as he reached in to his pocket and pulled out my bandana, placing it in her hands.

“This was the only thing that was saved.”

Lucinda tied it around her head like she always did then wrapped her arms around him for a hug. She didn’t know what came over her but she started crying.

“Oh god, where am I going to go? I can’t go home I don’t have a home anymore. I’ll be homeless and probably mugged again if not worse.” She sobbed into his chest

He wrapped his muscular arms around her and shushed her sobs, “No, no, no. You can come home with me till you’re better then we can figure out everything then. Okay? Just don’t cry I hate to see pretty girls cry.”

Lucinda sniffled and wiped her tears away then leaned against him as they walked out of the room, she as walking with a bit of a limp. Matt didn’t mind that she was leaning on him though. He signed her out then they both started walking towards the parking lot.

“Ow, ow, ow. Stop.” Lucinda groaned in pain, stopping to balance on her left foot so she didn’t hurt her other one.

She figured she sprained it during the whole mugging scene. Matt stopped and quickly came to Lucinda’s aid.

“Here, I gotcha.” Matt lifted Lucinda up into his arms.

She felt so much better once he started carrying her, “Thank you”

“No problem.” Matt grinned and carried her to the passenger side of the car rental.

He set her down softly then made sure she was in okay before shutting the door. Lucinda buckled herself in and couldn’t help but feel a bit nervous. She really didn’t know him too well but he seemed nice but she had spent a whole month watching murder cases on I.D. which let her mind run wild about all of the things that could happen with strangers that seem nice.

“You okay?” Matt asked once he got in and started the car.

Lucinda nodded and gulped as he started driving off. Her heart started racing when she realized he was taking back roads.

“Where are we going?” Nervousness was evident in her voice.

Matt flipped on the radio before answering, “California well actually Huntington Beach to be more exact. That’s where I live.”

Lucinda started shaking, “Oh god you’re going to kill me aren’t you?”

“What? Why do you think that?” Matt furrowed his eye brows at her.

She pointed at the road, “You’re taking back roads so you can kill me where no one will hear me scream.”

Matt started laughing which made her freak out a bit more, “No I’m not going to kill you. I’m not the type, weather you believe me or not I’m just a nice guy who wanted to help out a pretty girl.”

Lucinda narrowed her eyes at him trying to see if he was lying to her or not, “How can I be so sure.”

“Well you can ask my parents when we get to Huntington Beach, they know me like the backs of their hands.”

She couldn’t help but smile when she heard him say that. She believed him but she still kept her guard up just incase.
