Crossroads

Four

An hour passed of listening to the mix CD that had been playing on repeat. Finally Matt reached over and switched the stereo off. Lucinda glanced over at him as he began to speak.

“So if you don’t mind me asking, why exactly are you running away from home?”

Lucinda sighed, “Step-dad and I don’t get along. There’s really nothing that’s going right for me there so I just wanted to leave find a new place to start again.”

He nodded and noticed out of the corner of his eye that she was shivering. Matt slowed down a bit and reached back into the backseat of his car and grabbed his favorite Metallica hoodie.

“Here.” He handed her the hoodie.

Lucinda smiled softly and thanked him before pulling the hoodie on. She couldn’t help but notice that it smelt like cologne, motor oil, and faintly of smoke.

“You smoke?” Lucinda questioned.

He chuckled and accelerated a bit, “Nah, not me. My friends do and I have a few times but it’s not my style. On certain occasions though I do smoke cigars.”

She nodded and sniffed the jacket again, crinkling her nose a bit when she smelt the motor oil.

“Sorry bout the smell. I own my own auto body shop back in Huntington. I live alone so I don’t really wash my own laundry most the time, usually I take my clothes over to my mom’s house and she does it.”

Lucinda couldn’t help but giggle at that.

Matt shook his head with a small smirk on his face, “Yeah, yeah, laugh it up.”

“Even I know how to do laundry.”

Matt’s dimples popped out as he grinned, “Maybe you could show me how sometime.”

“I could try.” Lucinda smiled.

She started getting a bit more adjusted to the smell of his hoodie and soon was relaxed and leaning back in the passenger seat.

“What happened to your friends?” She asked remembering the men he had been with.

“I left them a message saying I was leaving, they’re coming back to Huntington two days from now.”

Lucinda nodded and felt stupid for having to ask but asked her question anyway, “What’s today’s date?”

“It’s March 19th.” He answered thinking for a second.

Her eyes widened and she almost couldn’t believe how long she had been gone.

“I’ve been gone for a month. Oh god, I haven’t even written Jacob a letter!” Lucinda exclaimed feeling horrible for not keeping her promise to her younger brother.

Matt frowned to himself when he saw that Lucinda was practically crying. Quickly he reached over and put his arm around her shoulders to comfort her. She scooted over so she was closer to him and sniffled.

“Is Jacob your boyfriend?” Matt questioned.

Lucinda let out a small laugh and wiped the tears from her eyes, “No, he’s my little brother. I love him with all my heart, I mean not in a weird way. I mean when I have a kid I want him to be just like Jacob.”

“He must be one rad little dude.” He chuckled.

She smiled and nodded feeling a bit more comfortable with Matt, “Yeah he defiantly is.”

“We’re only a few miles from Huntington so when we get there you can write him a letter.”

Matt smiled when he saw Lucinda smile. Her smile was contagious and made him feel something that he hadn’t felt in a very long time.
