York and Mori

Chapter 33- Mori

Mori:

Mori couldn’t wrap her mind around what Stevenson meant that Bear and her were now married. How could a person fall in love with a dog. Let alone marry one! Wasn’t there laws against that? Though Bear was human now…
“How did Bear…?”
“Quite simple actually!” Stevenson said with a smile, “After I was able to regain most of my power back from that day years ago, I was finally able to turn back to human.”
She went on to say that actually it was a few days before Mori and York left for their birthday. She described how happy she was to get back to talking and walking again like a human but when she tried to leave, Bear wouldn’t stop following her. She tried to shoo him away saying to stay with them, but he didn’t want to leave his new friend that he grew to like.
“Unfortunately, I don’t have enough power to free myself from the curse that was set on me. That actually saved me since after all of this happened in the world; the fantasy curse didn’t end up hurting animals like it did humans. I was able to turn back to human and found enough power to make Bear human too.”
“So who set the curse upon you?” Mori asked.
“Yeah, mom, because I remembered seeing you at school and in public too! If you were a cat how was that possible?”
Stevenson’s look became serious and she said the name “Benjamin Carter” was the reason for this. Mori and York both knew that meant that was Sir Carter. Stevenson went on to say that the day when she was going to test the final stages of the Gemini Project, Sir Carter had a fight with her. They both held different views on the ideas of the Gemini Project.
“My original goal was to study the brain. It was such a fascinating thing and when I saw Quinn and Jesse in town one day, I knew that I had to study them. They were perfect for what I wanted to try to accomplish, and they didn’t mind helping. However as my research developed some more, I found some old papers and information about a curse.
“A curse that had been over this town for generations that kept people from the outside world out and the people in the town in. I had wondered why the town had not grown in over fifty years, but I had never expected that a curse was to blame.”
She said that after building her lab, something changed in the atmosphere around it. It was as if a fog had been lifted from the worker’s eyes and they could focus on work rather than the effects of magic and the crops this year. She realized that even more that if she could unlock the brain maybe the curse would disappear.
That was the main reason for the Gemini project was to see if she could break the curse by advancing the brains of the children allowing them to learn more. However, the day when she was going to try the project, Sir Carter appeared in her office. He was demanding to know what she was doing with the town and she kept her mouth shut.
“In my research I had found that the founder of this town was a great and powerful wizard. Though there were no accounts of his death. As time went on and my research grew I noticed something familiar about several of the leaders throughout the town’s history. Each I had found out were Sir Carter.”
“Wait wait wait!” York interrupted, “Are you saying that Sir Carter is like a two hundred year old wizard?”
Gretta admitted that it seemed quite likely since he had great magical power. Quinn agreed too. Mori looked over to Stevenson and narrowed her eyes asking her to continue. Stevenson went on to say that the first mistake she made was try to black mail him saying that she knew his secret. The second was to get him even madder by saying that he was ruined. Because when she left to begin the project, not only did he ruin it, he cursed her so that she could learn her place in his world.
“Then, you must know how he did this then!” Mori said aloud.
“She’s right, if you know now who he is and what he can do, you must know what he was doing.”
“Isn’t it quite simple?” Stevenson sighed, “He wanted a perfect utopia.”
She stood up and walked over to a window to the city below.
“When all you know is your own world and time continues to change, wouldn’t you want to keep the past?”
Stevenson went on to say that she saw that her project worked. Jesse was awakened to the fact that the curse was wrong and he fought his parents about the strangeness of the town. She tried to study him as a cat, but he ran away before she could understand how her project worked on the one boy, but not the other. Then she realized that it was not just the project that tried to make the brain think some more, but it was an interference problem.
“I barely finished the Gemini project a few months ago and when I got a working sample, I used it on Mori and York.”
“Wait,” York interrupted again, “interference? What do you mean? Like a satellite?”
Stevenson nodded, “the machine the boys were hooked up to gave a jolt of electricity to their brains like what caffeine does to perk you up. It was all perfectly safe. But when the lab exploded, Quinn somehow got out of the straps that were placed to keep the work and Jesse stayed in them. The explosion set off a shock wave throughout the town and somehow affected the source of where the curse was affecting the town. At this time it was a place mounted in the ground. So by the chain, he was able to be snapped out of it.”
Stevenson went on to say that Sir Carter then realized how dangerous that was to his curse and went on to work on a greater way to perfect the signal of the curse to the citizens. He knew that the town wasn’t perfect like he wanted it to be. People still brought their cars, modern fashion, and uses of technology were being used. He already wanted to curse to be stronger, but as he did more research he found that satellites were a much better to use. Not only would satellites be a stronger use, thousands of people used them around the world for internet and communication.
Mori then remembered what he said on the tape. He was going to mass send his magical curse through radio waves and by hitting the right satellite; the radio waves would bounce to other satellites that would cover the entire world. He had done his math and research. The perfect one would orbit on the night of Mori and York’s 17th birthday.
“So what can we do?” Mori asked, “Stevenson, you need to help us!”
She turned back to the group and smiled, “The only way to get rid of the signal is to destroy the satellite dish that he has set up somewhere in this town. By destroying the connection from that dish, the bond would be cured from the world. However, you will have to also go through Sir Carter too.”
“That can’t be that hard right?” Quinn asked the group.
“Mom, if you can lead us there, then-”
Stevenson placed a hand up saying that she could not help. Mori stood and demanded to know why not. They had gone through so much work already, so why couldn’t she help them now?
“The only way to find his lab is to get him distracted. When he’s distracted by many things going off at once, his attention gets away from magic. He cloaks his labs and the satellite. So if you can find a good place in town that is high off the ground that is probably where his lab is. But someone else needs to distract him.”
Mori sat back down and they all thought for a moment unsure on what they could do. Sir Carter already knows that they were up to no good, so how would they be able to fool them. They all threw around a few random ideas but none of them would work. Mori’s attention went outside the window when she saw Jinx finishing up for the night. The party was tomorrow and he had to get the fireworks all up and ready.
Then her eyes got wide. She left the group quickly and left the shop leaving behind a confused crowd. She ran across the street and shouted to Jinx who looked back.
“Ah! Magic girl! Did the translation come in handy at all?”
“Yes it did, but I actually have a question for you.”
“I’m all ears!” he placed the latter against a fire lit street light.
“How many fire works have you been placing around town?”
He looked up, “probably a good hundred, including the many that will be used for the grand finally. Why do you ask?”
Mori gave a crooked smile and looked over to see York across the street.
“Hey guys! I think I found our distraction!”
