We Must Be Careful Who We Pretend To Be

This Isn't Happening

Will and I landed safely in LA on time. I walked out to the pick up area, Will in tow. I saw Adam's car and climbed in the front seat, Will in the back.

"Hey you!" Adam said, giving me a hug and a quick peck. "Who's this?"

"Oh, this is my friend Will," I explained, embarrassed by his actions and full well knowing who was sitting behind me. "He wanted to come with. Where's Pete?"

"Oh, you know Pete "something came up," he said, making air quotes.

"Big surprise there. Oh, Will, Adam, Adam, Will."

"Nice to meet you," Adam smiled.

"Yeah, you to," Will said.

I could sense he felt uncomfortable. Adam stared at me with a smile. He was very handsome, average height, brown eyes, spiky bleached blond hair.

"So, am I taking you to the usual?"

"Yeah, that sounds good. When do you want to go over the art?"

"Tommorrow morning around 9 sound good?"

"Ok, I'll be there."

"Good, I'll take you to breakfast first."

Adam pulled up to the hotel I usually stayed in. Will and I got out and approached the front desk.

"Reservation for Abigail Martin, please."

"Ah, Miss Martin, good to see you. How are you doing?"

"Great. How are you?"

"Oh, we are so busy. Your usual right?"

"Actually, do you have a room with two beds?"

Will cleared his throat.

"Let me see Oh, I'm sorry Miss Martin. We are totally booked."

"Oh, that's ok."

He handed me a key to my room and we went up to the room.

"So, business only?" Will asked sitting on the bed.

"Yup."

"That didn't look like business."

I sighed in exasperation.

"Will..."

"Well? It's not like we're together."

"God, I don't want to fight with you!"

"Are we fighting?"

"You are a giant pain in the ass, William. What do you want from me?"

"Nothing, Abigail, nothing."

I knocked him over and sat on his stomach.

"Why do you hate me?"

He looked at me, confusion in his eyes.

"I don't hate you. You're my best friend."

I just shook my head, sliding off him and laying on my back.

"So, yeah, I like Adam, ok? "

"Oh, is it serious."

"No, not serious."

Will laid down next to me. We laid there in silence. Not saying the things I think we both wanted to say. The silence began to lengthen.

"Dinner?" I asked.

"Sure."

We got up and went to get something to eat. I ordered us a bottle of saki and we began to drink. Soon enough, both of our faces were flushed and we were buzzed. My cell phone rang. Will glared at me as I answered it.

"Hullo?"

"Hey you."

"Adam, what's up?"

"I was thinking, I miss you. Do you want to go out for drinks?"

"Well, we're already at Geisha. Come over?"

"I'll be there in a few."

I hung up the phone and smiled drunkenly.

"Let me guess, Adam's coming," Will said bitterly.

"Yep," I said brightly.

Will settled silently back into his seat. I looked at his posture and began to get irritated.

"Do you have something to say?"

"Why did I even come here?" he said after a few moments hesitation.

"I don't know, why did you?" I returned rudely. "I'm going to the bathroom."

I got up and stormed away. I went in the bathroom and reapplied my lipstick. I stood there for a few moments and then walked out. Our table was empty. I sat in the chair and looked around for Will. My eyes settled on a white jewelry box sitting on the table. I picked it up and opened it. Nestled inside was a beautiful diamond ring, an engagement ring.

My heart stopped and my stomach wretched. I frantically looked around for Will, but he was no where to be found. It couldn't be, this was all moving way too quickly. There was no chance that Will was ready to move on, and especially not with me.

"Hey!"

I shoved the box into my pocket and stood up to meet Adam. He hugged me and kissed me. I didn't feel anything, I was numb. I smiled weakly.

"Where's your friend?"

"I think he went back to the hotel. Do you want to get out of here?"

"Sure, where do you want to go?"

"Oh, I don't care, anywhere."

So, Adam took me to a bar. I started to drink heavily, letting the alcohol cloud my mind. I blindly kissed Adam, sitting close to him. I began to not think about Will, I let the alcohol do the thinking.

"Let's go back to your place," I murmured in his ear.

"Sounds good."
