Admiring From Afar

“I kissed Cassandra,” Alex repeated again quietly.

“I heard you the first time!” Jack yelled at him, “I can’t believe you did that! You’re supposed to be my best friend!”

“Jack, it was only a one time thing, and it happened when we were broken up. Please don’t be mad,” Cassandra pleaded.

“Don’t be mad? Don’t be mad?! Oh, I’m five miles past mad, I’m fucking furious!” Jack yelled at his girlfriend.

“Jack, I’m really sorry dude,” Alex told him.

“Save it,” he told Alex.

“C’mon man, we’re best friends,” Alex told him while putting his hand on his shoulder.

“Get your fucking hand off me you no good motherfucker,” Jack said while shoving Alex’s hand off his shoulder. He looked over at Cassandra and walked over to her, “I hope you know that we’re over.”

“No Jack, please!” Cassandra begged him.

“I don’t want to hear it,” Jack said while walking up to the stairs. “And get the fuck outta my house!”

Cassandra took one more look at her Jack and told him ‘I’m sorry’ one more time before she left. She got into her car and went to the only other house she knew that she wouldn’t get turned away. When she arrived in the driveway, she saw a car that she didn’t recognize. She didn’t think anything of it and parked her car behind the unfamiliar one. She walked up the pathway that led to the front door and knocked on the door. She waited for a few moments and then she saw the door open. She was greeted by an unknown man.

“Yes?” the man asked her.

“I’m here to see my best friend, Jenn. Is she here?” Cassandra asked.

“Of course,” the man said and looked back into the house. “JENN!” he yelled at the top of his lungs. A few seconds later Jenn appeared by the man’s side.

“Cass!!! What are you doing here?” she asked her best friend.

“I got into a fight with my parents and then I went to Jack’s house only for Alex to tell him that we kissed and then Jack broke up with me,” Cassandra told her best friend with tears running down her face.

“Awww, baby, I’m so sorry. Come in, come in,” Jenn said and she ushered Cassandra into her house. They made their way to her bedroom. Cassandra sat down on the couch that she had in her room and grabbed a box of tissues that Jenn conveniently placed next to the couch.

“Tonight’s just been horrible,” Cassandra told her friend. Jenn sat down next to Cass and took her into her arms.

“I know honey, I know,” Jenn said while comforting her friend. She rubbed her back and hugged her tightly. Then, they heard someone clear their throat.

“Oh, yes. Cass, this is my boyfriend, Garrett,” Jenn told her friend. Cassandra looked up and saw the man that had opened the door for her earlier.

“Hi,” she said softly.

“It’s nice to meet you. Jenn has said so much about you. I’m very sorry for your problems though,” he told her.

“Thanks,” Cassandra saw quietly.

“If you excuse me, I’m going to get some ice cream,” Jenn informed her friend and boyfriend.

“Thank you,” Cassandra said to her best friend. Jenn left the room and then it was only Garrett and Cassandra.

“So, Jenn has told me a lot about you,” Garrett told her.

“Yeah, she didn’t really tell me that much about you,” Cassandra told him.

“Well, we’ve only known each other for a week or two,” Garrett told her.

“Oh, where are you from again?” Cassandra asked him.

“Arizona,” he replied sadly.

“That’s, like, across the country,” Cassandra told him.

“I know,” Garrett replied sadly.

“Are you going to try a long distance relationship?” Cassandra asked him.

“Yeah, hopefully it’ll work out,” he replied.

Then, Jenn came back into the room with three spoons and a carton of cookie dough ice cream.

“Cookie dough ice cream?” Cassandra asked her friend.

“Yup, it’s the perfect break up food,” Jenn told her friend while handing her a spoon.

“That is true,” Cassandra said as she dug her spoon into the creamy goodness. Jenn gave a spoon to her boyfriend and kept herself a spoon. They all started eating the ice cream. Once the ice cream was empty Jenn suggested they watch a movie.

“What movie do you guys wanna watch?” Jenn asked.

“How about The Notebook?” Garrett suggested. Jenn and Cassandra looked at him weirdly. “What? Isn’t that the movie girls watch when they’re going to through a break up?”

"It's just weird how you know that," Cassandra told him.

"Are you going to watch it with us?" Jenn asked her boyfriend.

“Oh, well, I just remembered something… I, uh, have to help my, uh, mom,” Garrett told them while inching out of the room.

“Isn’t your mom in Arizona with the rest of your family?” Jenn asked her boyfriend.

“Uh, I mean my mom’s, uh, friend?” Garrett told them although it sounded more like a question. He quickly walked out of the room and out of the house.

“Well, that’s some boyfriend you have,” Cassandra told her friend.

“Yeah, he’s great,” Jenn said with a dreamy look in her eyes.

“Well, let’s put the movie in!” Cassandra said as she put The Notebook into the DVD player.

Cass and Jenn woke up and realized if they didn’t get ready in 5 minutes they would be late for school. In record timing Cassandra put on her clothes and Jenn put on hers. They quickly walked to their first period class hoping to not get noticed by the teacher, but today was not their day. The teacher immediately saw them and called them to the front of the room.

“Miss Knowles and Miss Lee, can you please tell me why you are late?” Mr. Laine, their AP Chemistry teacher, asked them.

“We’re sorry Mr. Laine but we woke up late,” Jenn told him.

“Excuses, excuses. Detention! For both of you,” he said to them while handing them the horrible pink slips.

“Please go back to your seats and if you disrupt my class one more time I’m going to have to tell Mr. Jameson,” Mr. Laine threatened. Mr. Jameson was their principal but he wasn’t a big threat and Mr. Laine knew that. Cassandra and Jenn went to their seats and got their books out.
