The Man She Met Online

Run

A week and a half later, had passed and Harmony was forced to watch police car after police car pull up to her house. Only 3 had pulled up in front of Matt’s and each time she had screamed and hit the window but after a week she figured that the room had been soundproofed and gave up on having someone else rescue her. She’d have to do it herself.

Matt had actually let her bathe 4 nights ago and actually went out a bought a grey cami and some sleep shorts, which is what she’d been wearing every since. She was starting to feel dirty and uncomfortable in such a small dress. He also had put a small digital clock in her room per her request but pens and paper or anything recreation had been denied. All except a blue yo-yo Harmony found while walking around the basement. She used that to occupy her time but mostly spent the time sleeping or thinking of ways to escape. She knew the basement had a door but had is the magic word. Matt took it off the hinges and covered the hole because his house kept getting broken into.

Harmony thought about trying to find the hole and ramming through the weak material but knew Matt would hear the sound. She’d exhausted most of her options but wouldn’t give up. She couldn’t.

Matt had developed a schedule for her. At 10pm Matt came down with breakfast and allowed her to use the bathroom which actually required her to be able to leave the room for once. However, she only went two steps as the bathroom was next door to the basement and had to pee with the door open so she wouldn’t try to escape. Even though Matt turned his back, Harmony still found herself wishing she had more privacy. After walking her back down, Matt would close and lock her back in the basement.

Around 1, Matt brought her lunch which was usually a sandwich or some fruit, both of which were her favorite snacks. She guessed hanging out with him prior to this did have some perks. Harmony didn’t see Matt again until 8 in which he brought her dinner and sometimes sat with her and tried to carry on small talk as though this was the most normal thing in the world. She tried her hardest to cooperate during these conversations but simply couldn’t. She just wanted to leave.

“Hey gorgeous.”

Harmony rolled over to face Matt and sighed. “I’m not hungry.”

He placed the turkey sandwich down in front of her anyway and sat down next to her stomach. Though Harmony refused to meet his eyes, she could feel his staring holes through the side of her head.

She jumped when his hand grazed the skin of her hip, stiffening when it went higher. Even though she scooted away from his touch, Harmony couldn’t help but ache a little when his hand returned, this time on her cheek. God she missed the touch of other people. As weird as it sounded, Harmony was more of a hands on person. She like hugged, cuddling, and just touching other people and she didn’t know why.

Now that she was isolated from everyone else but Matt, she could feel herself slowly wanting his touches more and more. She really needed to leave.

“I need to use the bathroom.” Harmony told him, standing up.

Matt looked up at her for a few moments before standing and grabbing a hold of her wrist, his grip looser than usual. He led her to the bathroom and turned his back where Harmony came up with an almost foolproof plan. Sure she might lose a bit of her dignity and it might take a little longer than she’d like but she’d do whatever she had to do to get out of there alive.

After taking care of her business and washing her eyes, Harmony let Matt lead her back into the basement. He waited until she sat back on the mattress before turning away.

“Wait!”

Matt stopped in his tracks and walked back over to her. “Yes?”

Harmony fiddled with her shorts before looking up at him. “I just…I don’t wanna be alone anymore Matt. It’s so…” Her eyes filled with genuine tears as she thought of her parents who were worried sick about her.

Matt frowned and sat down on the mattress beside her. Sure he wanted to be someone big and bad and absolutely horrible but he just couldn’t do that to her. No matter how he treated her or what he said, Matt did care for Harmony. He did way more than he actually wanted to admit. He did to the point where he might even be able to say he loved her.

“I’ll stay with you for a little okay? Just don’t cry.” Throwing an arm around her shoulder, Matt pulled Harmony closer and held her as she cried into his shirt. She cried for what seemed like a half hour and Matt honestly had no problem holding her as she did so.

Lifting her head from his shoulder, Harmony looked up at him with bloodshot eyes and sniffed. “I don’t wanna be alone anymore.” She whispered before she brought her hand to the back of his neck and pushed his lips to hers.

Matt’s hands immediately went to her waist, pulling her body even closer to his. Harmony was the first to break the kiss, leading a line of kisses down his neck and moving to sit in his lap. When Matt tried to push her back onto the mattress seconds later, Harmony panicked and broke away. She thought she could actually go through with her stupid plan but the thought of actually have sex with Matt or anyone for that matter just seemed like too much for her. She was just 15 and though sex was on her mind she wasn’t sure if she was ready for someone to be inside her just yet, especially when it’s the older man who kidnapped her.

Matt’s lips on Harmony shoulder brought her back from her thoughts. Matt wrapped his large arms around her and kissed the skin behind her ear. Harmony could basically feel how happy and relaxed he was just then and wanted to break free and attempt to make a run for it. But then he held her closer and pulled her body back into his chest and she wanted to cry because as much as she hated that it had to be him it felt so good to finally be held again.

“One day right?” Harmony was confused to as what Matt was referring to until she felt his hand on her upper inner thigh, gripping her lightly but just enough to make her gasp.

“Yea, one day.” She lied straight through her teeth.

A week later and Harmony was ready. Matt had left her in his bed, not in the basement, to go get some tools from the store and she was ready to escape. Ever since that day in the basement, Matt had become extremely affectionate towards her and she had to return the favor, you know for her plan to work. Matt slept in the basement with her that night and after complaining about how uncomfortable it was, allowed Harmony to sleep in bed with him until he could go out and get her a new frame.

She went to sleep and woke up with Matt’s arms wrapped tightly around her waist and had to wake him up so he could escort her to the bathroom if she had to go during the night. He still locked her in the basement if he had to go out but other than that, under his supervision, she was allowed to be upstairs. After talking Matt into buying a Netflix account, they spent an entire two days in bed watching their favorite shows. Sure Harmony enjoyed that but she convinced herself that it was all for show. It had to be.

Harmony slipped out of Matt’s bed and began quickly putting on whatever she could find. Since her sleep shorts were by the bed she threw those on and grabbed one of Matt’s shirts from his dresser. She barely had it over her head before she was at the front door.

“Harmony!!” A door slammed somewhere in the house.

She jumped, working faster to unlock the door and threw it open all the while preparing herself to sprint across the street and bang on her parent’s door until someone heard her. Someone had to hear her. But one step outside the door and Harmony froze, her legs stalling.

The beautiful two story mint green and white house she’d grown up in was in flames. Upstairs, a window burst from the heat and she could barely make out her computer desk before the flames began to demolish her memories. Everything she loved, all of her valuables were in that house, and now they were gone. But most importantly, where were her parents?

“Harmony I swear to go-!” Harmony turned and found Matt holding a gasoline can. Her world began to tip and spin as her eyes darted back and forth from the can to his shocked face. “Harm-“

“Please tell me you didn’t do it.”Somewhere deep in her heart she wanted to believe that Matt wouldn’t kill anyone. Sure he’d hit her before but that was an old time thing and he apologized for it a billion times. “PLEASE TELL ME YOU DIDN’T!”

“THEY WERE ABOUT TO TAKE YOU AWAY FROM ME HARMONY, THEY KNEW!”Matt took a slow deep breath and sat down the can. “I couldn’t let them take you away from me Harmony, not after how happy you were. I couldn’t let them ruin-“

“God I can’t believe you!” Harmony sobbed, beginning to back out of the house even more. “I can’t believe you’d kill my family you heartless monster!”

“I did what I had to do for us! Now come here and we’ll-“

Harmony darted out of his house and ran for the neighbor’s, who had yet to notice the raging first happening across the street. “Please help! Someone help me!!”

“Harmony!” Matt caught her before she crossed over onto the neighbor’s property and began dragging her back into the house as quickly as he could, his hand pressed over her mouth. Matt threw her back into the house and slammed the door. “What were you thinking!? Have you lost your fucking mind?!”

From her position on the kitchen floor, Matt towered 6 feet over her shaking from pure rage. As he bent down to grab her, something from behind her jumped on him.

Harmony couldn’t move, could barely breathe.

Her father, nearly half burnt and struggling to hang on, was saving her.

“Run Harmony!” Caleb grunted out as he wrestled with Matt, barely managing to keep his chokehold on him. “RUN!! Run and don’t come back!”

Harmony scrambled to her feet just as Caleb was slammed to the floor. Matt made to grab her but Caleb held fast to his ankle as she escaped out the front door. The last time she saw her father; Matt had grabbed a knife off of the kitchen counter and stabbed him in the neck. She briefly saw him begin bleeding from the wound before she was running from the house and gathering crowd outside the neighborhood.

She couldn’t think, Harmony just ran, ran as fast as she could until the neighborhood was behind her and she was absolutely sure Matt didn’t followed her and even past that point. She just wanted to get away from it all and honor her father’s final wish by never coming back.
