Never Meant to Be
Chapter Twenty-Two
September 27th, 2010
Monday
Evangeline’s old house, Nashville, TN
1:20 A.M.
It seemed like it had been a week before Monday night finally came. She spent the day with her father, Trenton and her brother out in the city and then she waited for night to fall before going out and waiting on the front porch steps for Nathan. A car pulled into the driveway and she stood up in excitement. When Nathan stepped out and said
“I’m back baby,” she ran to him and jumped into his arms.
“I love you,” she said
“I love you too,” he said “So are we going back to the lake?”
“Ya, the weather is the same as it was on Saturday night.” The two did the same as they had before, snuck two horses out of the barn and rode off into the woods. When they reached the lake it became a race on who could get into the lake first. Evangeline dismounted first as quickly as she could and tied the horse to the same branch she had the night before. She ran for the water as she saw Nathan behind her. She dove into the lake feeling the cool water rush past her. As she came to the surface she saw Nathan diving in after her. She screamed as he came down next to her and sent a wave of water over her head. She felt him come up between her legs and lift her up out of the water on his shoulders.
“Put me down!” she said laughing. He threw her back into the water and caught her before she hit the bottom. He held her against him and said
“This will be our official place to escape,” he said smiling. Evangeline laughed and said
“Right so we’ll just fly down here every night,”
“Every weekend,” he said grinning. She laughed again and pressed her face against his chest. She closed her eyes and listened to the crickets chirping around them. She listened to his steady heart beat and said
“I left your wedding ring back in my room.”
“Oh ya that,” he said in an unconcerned voice. “I’ll get it when I leave.”
“Seriously,” said Evangeline “Don’t forget it. If Tammy finds out she’ll be angry.”
“What does it matter?” he said looking away.
“I really don’t want to pull you away from her, she’s your wife.” Nathan shrugged and said
“Like I said being with you has shown me how life could really be,” She shoke her head and said
“Don’t ever leave your family.”
“You keep saying that to me,” he said. “Technically I have two families, Tammy and Dylan, and you and Trenton.”
“Tammy and Dylan are the ones who you should stay with.” She said.
“Then what are you to me?” he asked. She thought for a moment and then said
“I’m your mistress and Trenton’s your love child.” He smiled and said
“You’re my mistress? That sounds sexy.” Evangeline laughed and said
“It’s going to stay that way.” They quieted down and he said a minute later.
“I wish it didn’t have to.”
