It was a chilly morning when Evangeline stepped out of the car. She looked back at Trenton in his car seat. She wouldn't be long and could leave him there for the few minutes she'd be gone. She cracked the windows and locked the car doors. She walked down onto the soft sand. The cool wind blew her yellow dress around her legs as she looked down the beach. She spotted Nathan walking towards her. His SUV and her Ford Explorer were the only two cars in the parking lot. It wasn't sunny out. Light gray clouds blocked out any source of warm sunlight. He wore a white dress shirt and jeans. He smiled at her but she kept her expression blank. They met and he leaned in to kiss her. She turned her face away so instead of her lips he kissed her cheek. He pulled her to him and said

"I'm so sorry about what happened babe." He rocked her back and forth in his arms. "You know you're the one I love." She pulled away and said

"Nathan I'm leaving."

"What?!" He said. "What do you mean you're leaving?!"

"I can't do this anymore," She took another deep breath. "I'm pregnant again, and I can't bring another baby into this situation." A look of shock came across his face and he said

"It's mine?" She nodded and said

"Me and David always used protection, we were careful." He got a look of pure desperation and said

"Please don't leave me, please."

"I can't live in this situation anymore; Tammy knows what's going on. In the limo to the church she threatened me. I need to get out of here." He grabbed onto her hand and said

"Please don't go, please come back to me," She saw tears form at the corner of his eyes. He got onto his knees and weighed her down from walking away.

"If only things had been different from the beginning." she said shaking her head in sorrow. "But we were never meant to be." She pulled her hand from his and reached up around her neck and unclasped the locket. "You need to stay with your true family," She handed him the locket. "Give this to Tammy. Get my name erased and put hers in its place. She'll love it." It was the first time she'd seen him cry.

"Don't go, I want to see Trenton grow up and to be there when you have my baby, please stay with me!" She felt herself begin to get emotional, something she promised herself she wouldn't do.

"I would love to live with you in you're beautiful home in Brookline, and wake up everyday to your face but it will never be anything but a dream." She kissed him lightly on the lips and then turned and walked away forever from the man she loved. She didn't look back as she walked back up to the parking lot. She knew if she turned back to look at him she'd burst into tears and run back into his arms. She pulled open her car door and got back into her car. She'd gotten enough money together to buy a small rural home in Maine. It was there that'd she'd pick up the pieces of her shattered life and put everything back together.

Nathan was still down on his knees. He watched the love of his life walk away from him and he felt more tears stream down his face. He hadn't cried like this since his dog died when he was fourteen. He tightly held the locket in his hand, so tightly that he could feel the diamonds digging into his flesh. He watched her get into her car and back out. She didn't glance back at him with her beautiful blue and brown eyes. He felt the loneliness set in as he listened to her car drive off. He looked down at the gold locket he'd given to her and opened it to see their names inside. He broke down into tears again. He got up and considered tossing the locket into the ocean but instead slipped it into his pocket. He'd keep it as long as he loved her. He thought back to all the nights they'd spent together, and all the passionate moments. He remembered her gorgeous smile, her soft voice, and the gentle way she ran her hands over his body. He wouldn't be able to get through life without seeing her again. He wouldn't let her disappear from him forever.
