Love Like Winter

four;

This place was almost worse than Aurora had originally thought. When she finally got into town after a ridiculously long lecture from her Uncle, she could see that there was hardly anything aside from a gas station, a grocery store and several bars. Hidden behind the gas station she could see a mechanic’s shop, and she could see several stores littered about, but no doubt they possessed hardly any thing noteworthy.

Aurora parked the car near the grocery store since everything seemed to be in walking distance, and the only place big enough to store her car without seeming conspicuous was the grocery store. So Aurora eventually kicked open the door, still having difficulty with the rental car her Uncle had managed to get. Though how he had it brought all the way down to bufu she had no idea.

She was supposed to make a stop at the mechanic’s but first she had to check out the stores. In a town as small as this, if there was something cute or something she wanted she had to get it before anyone else did. The first thing she really noticed was just how dead the town was…it felt like a ghost town. Aside from one or two people on the sidewalk, she could see no one. The windows of every store she passed was tinted to the point where seeing inside was near impossible.

Eventually she passed by a store, where the name sounded promising. Urban Culture. Why she doubted she would get anything there, she found herself squeezing through the doorway. The first thing she noticed was a lot of woodcarvings. Of bears and wolves. Then there was the beaded necklaces, and pottery. Was this a sort of tribal ground she was living on?

Aurora ventured through the store, and eventually came upon a dark haired woman who was flipping through a magazine at the register. She couldn’t see her face, but could tell that her skin was bronzed. After a moment of hesitation, Aurora eventually approached the desk with a knitted sweater in her hand.

The cashier didn’t seem to notice Aurora’s presence though, so as she cleared her throat the brunette looked up. Aurora was momentarily stunned by the fiery glare the girl was giving her. A quick glance at her nametag revealed her to be Isabelle. “What?”

Aurora was still stunned, silence cloaked her throat but finally she spoke. “I wanted to…buy this,” she said with a small smile, holding out the sweater. Isabelle snatched the sweater away before ringing in the necessary information. She told Aurora the price and as she dug around in her purse, she could hear Isabelle’s foot snapping on the ground. She eventually found the money and held it out to the girl. “I’m Aurora, by the way.”

“I know who you are,” Isabelle said, and once again Aurora was shocked into silence. “You’re Davidson’s niece. You also crashed into the old oak outside of 45,” Isabelle hissed. Aurora was amazed at how much this girl seemed to hate Aurora.

“Sorry, about that.” Aurora muttered, swallowing her pride and attempting not to lash out at the pretty dark haired girl. Eventually, she headed out and ventured toward the mechanic’s. She was mumbling under her breath as she approached the mechanic’s, swearing at her idiocy for even trying to make small talk with a girl who obviously disliked her. But she couldn’t help but sense that there was underlying reason for her dislike.

“Can I help you?” an amused voice boomed out, making Aurora jump. She glanced around eventually finding a very hairy face glancing out at her. Bare muscled arms, grasped the hood of the car as he closed it and stepped out from the front of the car to greet her.

“Um, yeah. I’m here to check on my uncle’s car. His name is—“

“Davidson, yeah. Got it right over here. It still needs some work but it’s drivable. Did you want to take it home now?”

“Um, no. I’ll let him decide that,” Aurora mumbled, having a hard time looking away from the mechanic and at the actual car. He seemed to notice, and the cocky grin on his lips didn’t seem to help her situation.

“You want to Urban Culture? You must’ve met Isabelle then?”

Aurora nodded, lips pressed tightly together as she recalled her encounter with the brunette. “She’s lovely. Is she your girlfriend?”

“Something like that. I’m Aiden, and you’re obviously Davidson’s niece…but what’s your name?” Aurora couldn’t help but smile at the mechanic. He was friendly, unlike his girlfriend and that was something she could get used to. It wasn’t like she received a lot of niceties back home.

“I’m Aurora,” she said, her smile never wavering.

“Like Sleeping Beauty.” Aurora couldn’t help but snort, but she nodded nonetheless, covering her mouth embarrassed by her less than lady-like behavior. She finally managed to look up at Aiden long enough to get a good look at his face. Before she just continuously was staring at his exposed arms, the rippling muscles in them completely distracting. He was actually very nice to look at. A thick black beard danced across his face, combining with a thick head of equally dark hair. But those eyes were so familiar to her, but she couldn’t place them for the life of her.

“Something like that,” she finally said with a smile. “It was nice meeting you, Aiden.”
