“It’s weird that I’m more jealous of fashionable boys than girls?” Alexandria says to Jamie the next day. Class is almost over, and Jamie can’t remember one thing that was taught in class. Only that Alexandria’s voice has yet to be quiet.

“No?” he answers, and he really doesn’t, because he envies everyone’s style, including Alexandria’s. Today she’s fixed up to look like, he thinks, the lead singer of Bikini Kill: pony tail in a red scrunchie and a skin tight, red-stripped dress on her body. It should look trashy but she owns it.

Jamie picks timidly at his ripped jeans.

Alexandria is still gabbing. “Yeah, ‘cause I stand next to a pretty girl and I’m cool. But a guy? I feel like mud.”

When Jamie doesn’t answer, and instead shrugs, she adds, “Like you.”

The mad blush on his face is enough to satisfy her.
