Royalty For Hire

Chapter Seven

Brigetta couldn’t believe what she had gotten herself into with Rosemary. How has she talked me into planning the next break into the Hall of Records Brigetta would never know… the entire time Brigetta was scared that she’d get caught planning this. The Hall of Records was not a place to break into, and it was not a place for kids to try to break into. She whispered, “Rosemary, we’re going to get caught.”

Rosemary drummed on the steering wheel, rolling her eyes at how dramatic the princess was being. She simply said, “Just look at the plans. I’m not going to force you to come along with me. I just want you to know what I’m doing this time. Plus, you’re the only one I trust.”

The look of desperation on Rosemary’s face was all Brigetta needed to melt in her friend’s palms. She still felt bad for using her magic over Rosemary so much when they were in the boutique that she felt the need to make it up to her. She didn’t know why she felt bad -- she just did. Sometimes Brigetta thought Rosemary was only lying about not having magic. She said, “Rose… I’m not sure if this is a good idea.”

Rosemary snorted and thought, Typical Bee. Always scared to even try even when she knows it’s the right thing to do. Rosemary explained again, as if Brigetta was three years old, “We have to see what’s going on with the magic… figure out where the root cause of it… how the Government even came to be about, more about you and Orion… and of course the true positioning of the hierarchy.”

Brigetta gulped, and couldn’t help but think, Rose has gone insane. She couldn’t help but smile, unable to resist the fact that Rosemary just seemed so innocent. Brigetta sighed, and asked, “Is that all?”

Rosemary nodded, not seeming to realize that Brigetta was being sarcastic. She said, “Tonight.”

Three hours later and the blond girl couldn’t believe what her friend had talked her into. She stood in all black, playing with the braids her friend had done to her hair as Rosemary dug around the file cabinets with ease. Rosemary smiled and looked over at Brigetta. She said breezily, “Relax. The security’s already left and they assume no one would be stupid enough to break in twice. The first break in was just to be sure of their floor plans. This one is to catch data.”

Brigetta sighed, knowing that Rosemary was obviously taking this too easily. She looked around for security and thought, this isn’t a good idea. Brigetta knew that something could go wrong and it would ruin their lives. Brigetta whispered angrily, “This is a stupid idea and you know it!”

Rosemary narrowed her eyes at Brigetta. Brigetta was not being helpful to the investigation. She whispered, “Calm down, bitch.”

Rosemary place the flashlight pen in her mouth and pulled open the drawer that had Brigetta’s name on it, looking through the files. She muttered, “Bee, look at this.”

Brigetta leaned over and gasped in horror. The hierarchy was there… and it was abundantly clear that she had been misled to believe she had far more power than she actually had. Her eyes took in the fact that she wasn’t even above guards, and somehow, Brigetta felt this made enough sense -- but hurt her in ways she didn’t even know was possible. She said, “They don’t trust the royals because of King James… but they haven’t changed the hierarchy. Not once. Wait… why is this in my drawer?”

Brigetta hadn’t noticed that her name was ranked below certain guards… and right above a certain Rosemary. Rosemary was tagged “future president?” Rosemary’s smile slide off her face, and stated, “And all this time… I just thought they picked me because I was smart…”

Brigetta noticed there was a Samantha Taylor listed in her file and Jared’s handwriting that read, “to be dealt with”. Brigetta frowned. She thought she heard of Samantha Taylor, but maybe it was a different Samantha Taylor. Samantha was a very common name… and Taylor was a common surname. She knew a princess with the name “Taylor”. Brigetta said, “Samantha Taylor… that name seems familiar… isn’t that a stripper in town?”

Rosemary nodded, unable to say anything. She pulled out the file on the magic, the file on Orion, the file on Orion and Brigetta, and the file on the full list of Government officials. She shoved it into the bag, and handed it to Brigetta. Rosemary said, “We’ll look at the later. The more time we spend in here, the more likely we are to get caught.”

Brigetta nodded, and they took off together in the car they came in with. However, Brigetta had known they would get caught, but she never planned to be holding the plans about her and Orion’s arranged marriage, how the magic works, and a detailed list of how the Government came to be about. Rosemary couldn’t believe she was so careless to drive so quickly. She muttered to Brigetta, “Act natural.”

Brigetta gave a sort of hacking half-laugh. The guard got down from the cruiser, and looked very serious about whatever the reason she was being pulled for. Brigetta lowered her head, her heartbeat racing at the idea of possible jail time. Brigetta gave a winning smile to the guard, and said, “Problem, officer?”

The guard took one look at the bag and nodded to another guard. He said, “I’m sorry Princess. But you’re coming with us.”
