Chapter 10
"Ugh what time is it?" I thought rolling over in my bed. My phone said it was 9:45am. 5 hours of sleep...fabulous. I wanted to go back to sleep but I know I can't.
Today I needed to held back to Syracuse. I couldn't tell if I was happy about it or not. After last night I was ready to get home. But then I had to get back to work. I couldn't hang around and have fun with Jon or even Patrick.
God Patrick. He wouldn't care that I'm leaving. He's got plenty of girls keeping him company. Ugh, that girl is probably still here. I hope she didn't do anything stupid. I'd be furious and disappointed. But I'm sure if I said something last night, Pat would brush me off. Man, if Jon wasn't here....I don't know.
I closed my eyes praying for more sleep. Then my stomach growled. So much for more sleep. I through the covers off me and walked to the bathroom for a quick shower. I got dressed and put some gel in my hair to help it's natural curls. I packed up all my stuff and put the room back together before I went downstairs. Everyone must still be asleep. Perfect. I went to the kitchen and started pulling out things to make pancakes.
Just as I was mixing the batter, Jon joined me, "Mornin' Kara." He said smiling. He was already dressed for the day.
"Mornin' Jon. How'd you sleep?"
"Like a log...even with only 5 hours of sleep. You?" I shrugged. From the kitchen, we heard a set of footsteps coming down. Pat's up early....unless Pat grew longer hair and boobs.
"Oh, hello. I didn't think anyone was up." The chick said setting her purse on the counter next to Jon. I kind of just starred at her as she went through her bag and pulled out her phone. If my starring and her trying not to look at me wasn't awkward enough, Jon fidgeting in his seat did the trick. "Would you like some food? I'm making pancakes." I offered. The least I could do was give her something to eat before she disappeared out of Pat's life for good.
She glanced up at me like she was nervous or something, "Um, no...thanks. I need to get going." She looked around the room in search of whatever, "I think I left my shoes upstairs." She decided to inform us. She set her phone down and went back upstairs.
I practically dove over the counter to reach for her phone. Jon just watched me, eyes wide, "What are you doing?" He hissed glancing between me and the stairs. I ignored him as I searched her pictures spotting exactly what I thought would be in there. I deleted it and set her phone back where it was just as the busty blonde came back down, "Well I need to get going. It was nice meeting you." She said grabbing her things and walking towards the door. Jon and I gave her our best smiles which quickly disappeared as the door shut.
"What the hell did you do to her phone?" Jon asked. I couldn't tell if he was more curious or angry.
"Don't worry about it." I told him as I poured the pancake batter on the stove.
"Kara you just went into her phone and did whatever. That's a bit weird. What was in her phone?"
I sighed, "She had a picture of Pat....and not a good one. I deleted it."
"Kara she's gonna know you did it."
"That picture was taken around midnight. I know she was too drunk at that time to remember anything like that. Besides, she doesn't even know my name and I'm going home. I'll never see her again."
"Why did you do it?"
"To protect Pat."
"I smell pancakes!" Pat's voice rang out as he jumped down the stairs. He smiled at me and accepted the fresh breakfast, "I love waking up to breakfast. I think you should stay longer Kara." He added.
"Some of us have work. Maybe another time." I promised. His face at hearing my words was like a kid being promised he'll meet Santa Clause.
After breakfast I cleaned up. Jon had gone to gather his things before he left for Winnipeg, leaving Pat and I, "Thanks for cleaning up Kara. I appreciate it." He said.
"Yeah, well you were busy last night." I didn't mean for it to come out rude, but I meant it.
"I am sorry I didn't spend time with you last night. I just got caught up with seeing old friends."
"And making new ones." I added.
"You're a great friend Kara."
"You're not too bad yourself Kaner." Pat smiled and pulled me into a hug. I wrapped my arms around his torso since I only came up to his chest. I did not want to let go of him. He was warm and comforting. I felt safe in his arms.
"We need to drop Jon off at the airport before we head to Syracuse. Is that alright?" Pat asked as he ended our hug. I nodded. I'm not so sure I want to go home now.
"Ready to head out?" Jon asked as he carried his duffel to the door. We piled into Pat's car, me in the back seat. I starred at the nice lake house as we drove off.
---
"Promise you'll text?" Jon asked as we stood in front of security. Pat had walked away to answer a phone call from his agent giving Jon and I some time to say our good byes. "Maybe you can come up to Winnipeg sometime before the season starts."
"I'd have to check my schedule and have my people call your people." Jon smiled.
"It was really nice getting to know you Kara. One of the best weekends I've had in a long time." he said causing me to blush.
"I had a great time too. We'll defiantly have to hang out again." Jon brought me closer to him as we hugged another goodbye. "I'll miss you Kara." He whispered then pressed his lips to my forehead. I felt his arms fall from my waist as Patrick came up, "Sorry about that. It was good seeing you as always Captain. We'll have to plan another party soon." Pat said.
"Sure Kaner. You'll have to bring Kara to Winnipeg sometime."
"I'll do my best. Have a safe flight man." I awed at their little bro/man hug.
"Text me when you land." I said as Jon walked towards the security. He nodded and waved. Pat put his arm around my should, "There he goes. I'm gonna miss him." He said pretending to wipe a tear away.
"You're so weird." I laughed.
"You love it. Come on, time to get you home."
The ride home was similar to the ride to Buffalo. Pat and I talked nonstop about everything and anything. I don't know about you but where was this Patrick yesterday? I really needed to help with because the Patrick Kane that wanted to drink and have sex 24/7 was nothing compared to this carefree Patrick Kane.
When the three hours were up and we stood in my drive way I didn't want to say good bye, "I don't want to say good bye." Pat said, dramatically wrapping his arms around me, crushing me into his chest.
"Then promise it won't be good bye. How about...see you later?"
"I can do that. We'll have to meet up sometime. Winnipeg is beautiful this time of year...or so I've heard."
"I'll let you know when I came. My show doesn't have much longer."
"Good, more Patrick/Kara time." He said smiling.
"You should get going. It's a long drive back alone."
"I suppose."
"Text me when you get home?" I requested of him.
"Of course. I'll see you later Kara." He kissed the top of my head and let go of me. I walked up to my front door and waved as he pulled out and drove off.
---
"If you can just put the costumes back together, you can get home." My boss Connie said.
An hour after Pat dropped me off, I had to head to the theater for rehearsals. Tonight was the first night with organizing the costumes and let's just say...not organized well. Connie left it to me to create a new system to keep it clean and together.
I had been trying to do that for the past 5 hours but mix that with the actors running in and out, other duties with props and sets, and Pat texting me I didn't get much done.
I decided just to hang everything up and come in early tomorrow to get it together before practice. I was too tired to think for the night.
At home all but the hall light was off. My mom must have gone to bed and my brother wasn't home yet. I dropped my purse on my bedroom floor and got on my computer to check my email. Apparently I didn't miss much on my vacation. I did have one from Gina, my college friend, who was just checking up on me. I sent her a reply and shut my laptop. Just as I was about to get ready for bed my phone went off, "Hello Cap'n'."
"Hey Kara. Sorry I'm calling late. I didn't get a chance to earlier."
"That's alright. As long as you're alive and well." He laughed, "So how was your day?"
"Busy and unorganized but I'm going to worry about that tomorrow. You?"
"It was alright. I had dinner with my family."
"Aw how sweet."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. I should probably let you get some sleep. I didn't think about the time difference. I just wanted to hear your voice." Good thing he couldn't see how red my cheeks were right now.
"I probably sound like a zombie." I joked.
"Nah, you sound just as I remember you, beautiful." Is he trying to kill me?
"Thanks Jon. I'll talk to you later. Sweet dreams."
"Sweet dreams Kara."
And sweet they were.
