Scarlett's Choice

Back To School

New year. New day. New me. I walk into the halls of Black Valley High. It’s a Monday morning. I’m going to the school office to get my class schedule and my new locker number when I hear my name being called over my earphones. “Scarlett! Scarlett! Hey, Scarlett, would you just wait up for a minute?” I turned around; it’s my friend Cammie Lockwood. Cammie was one of my first friends here at Black Valley High and I think that she’ll be one of my friends forever. Well, along with David of course, but I’ll get to him later.

Cammie wore an orange shirt that said Hollister Co. on it, dark blue skinny jeans, and converses. She also wore a red butterfly necklace.

“Oh, sorry. I didn’t hear you over my music.” I pointed to my iPod. She took it out of my hand then raised an eyebrow.

“You don’t think that you could turn Black Veil Brides’ 'Knives and Pens' off for me?” I just looked at her and said nothing. “Wow, thanks Scarlett.”

“Hey, I said I was sorry, didn’t I?” I said; then I turned my iPod off and put it in my backpack.

“I’m just kidding. It’s okay. So, have you gotten your school schedule yet?”

“Not yet. Have you?”

“Nope. I’m going there right now though.”

“Cool. When do you think David will get here?” Cammie said.

“I don’t know but remember last year, he got here right before second period started.” I said. Then we came to a stop at the office and got our schedules.

“Hello. What are your names’?” The woman at the desk asked. I don’t recognize her. She must be new. She’s wearing a black pencil skirt with a white blouse with ruffles on the top of her shirt. She looks about twenty-five maybe, with blue eyes and shoulder length dirty-blond hair.

“My name is Scarlett Outcast and her name is Cammie Lockwood,” I said.

“Oh, I love your names. I wish I had a name like Scarlett or Cammie,” She said as she was looking for our files and getting our schedules out.

“My name is Ms. Evans, but you can call me Samantha in the class rooms. Oh, it looks like I will be teaching both of you this year. Photography. I just want both of you guys to know that as long as you try as hard as you can in my class, you will at least get a C+.” Samantha said.

“I’m sorry but my curiosity just gets the better of me sometimes. Are you a new teacher here?” Cammie said.

“Well yes, I am.” Samantha said. “Here are your schedules Cammie, Scarlett. Have a nice year and I’ll see both of you in fifth period.” Samantha smiled and with that, she turned back to her desk and continued to work on her laptop. Cammie and I started walking again and looked through our schedules.

“Come to the bathroom with me. I gotta reply my lip gloss and I need to put eyeliner on.”

“Okay.”

“Need some?” She offered me her lip-gloss.

“Sure. What kind is it?”

“It’s ‘Underage’ by MAC Cosmetics.”

“Cool.”

“Need some eyeliner?”

“No thanks. I’m trying to get more of a natural look this year.”

“Whatever.”

We went back into the hall. Then the bell rang. Homeroom time. “What’s your homeroom number,” I said.

“Number 108,” she sad coolly and proudly.

“Wow, you remembered our homeroom number. Good for you.”

“Thanks. So who do you have all day?” She showed me her schedule.

“Oh, my God! All of our classes are the same!”

“Well, we did sign up for all of them together. I wonder what classes David got.” I said.

“Chill, everything will be alright.” Cammie said as we walked into our homeroom class.

“Fine. So who do you think is going to be our math teacher?”

“How can someone’s last name be ‘Downey’ when Mrs. Downey is so nice and cheerful?” I said, not realizing that I changed the subject.

“I don’t know. It’s kinda weird though.” When we reached the end of the hallway, room 108’s door was open and we saw Mrs. Downey outside greeting other students. We entered the classroom.

“Hello everybody, my name is Mrs. Downey and I will be your homeroom and Creative Writing teacher. Now, the bell is about to ring so before you go to your next class, please come to my desk on your way out and pick up this quiz-” Great, first day of school and we’re already having a quiz, I thought. “-This is not graded but I would like to get to know you all better. As a homeroom teacher, I feel that that is important.” Then the bell rang and we all got up to go to our next class. “This is due Friday morning.” Mrs. Downey tried to say over the crowd that is heading toward the door. When we both were out of the class, I said, “So what were you saying?”

“I was saying, who do you think is going to teach math?”

“I don’t know, but I hope it’s not Mrs. Montgomery. Man, she’s scary as hell,” I said.

“I know, right? She yells at everyone for no reason!” When we walked into math class, it was of course, non other than Mrs. Montgomery.

“This is gonna be a long year,” Cammie said.

“Everyone sit in your seats. Hurry! I don’t have all day!” She boomed. Oh, my God. This is gonna be a really long year. Good thing math comes natural to me, I thought.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

When math was over, Cammie and I went to our lockers. Thankfully, both of our lockers are close to all of our classes and close to each other, but I just couldn’t help but to think about David and where his locker is, where he is and what his classes are.

“So, what’s your locker number?” she asked me.

“Um… locker 277b. What’s yours?”

Cammie took her piece of paper that the school gave us and said, “Locker number 257b. So I guess we’re gonna see each other a lot this year, huh?”

“Yeah.”

“So, I-” Cammie was interrupted when David came up to us from behind and put his arms both around us so he was in the middle.

“Hey, you guys ready for this year?” He wore a plain blue shirt, black jeans, and converses.

“Sure. I guess. I can’t wait for this year. I get my permit and for my ‘Sweet Sixteen’, I’m going to have it at my friend’s house. He has a huge pool and his mansion is so big you could get lost from walking from outside to the kitchen.” I said.

“Sounds sweet. I’m totally goin’. And you camcorder?” David said.

“And for me, -” Cammie took a dramatic pause, “-I’m going to go out with Zack Montgomery. Oh, yes. This is defiantly my year. Hold on. Wait, did you just call me camcorder! You know how I hate that nick name, David.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever.” He said.

“Hey Cam, isn’t Zack Mrs. Montgomery’s son?” Right when I said that, Cammie started having a spaz attack, or so it looked like that.

“What! No way! No, no, no, no, no, no! They cannot be related. Do you hear me? CANNOT! C-A-N-N-O-T!” Wow Cam, I didn’t know that you had it in you.

“Don’t worry. I made out with him once. Trust me, you aren’t missing out on anything.” David said while we were kept walking, leaving Cam back there who’s having a breakdown. Oh, and have I forgotten to mention, my dear friend, David here is bisexual. And incase you don’t know what that means then it means that he’s neither gay nor straight. He’s attracted to both sexs.

“Oh, my God! Is Zack gay or bisexual?!” I said. When I said that, people in the hallway started to look over at us to see what was going on. I mean, they were already looking at Cammie, but now because I said that out loud, and I mean really loud, they were more turned on then before. Good thing there’s more than one Zack in this school. “You know, people the same sex can make out without being gay or bisexual. But I do have a theory that every girl is ‘gay’ because the word ‘gay’ means ‘to like boys’; lesbian means ‘to like girls’ basically. So, to clarify, all guys are lezbos, and all girls are gay, unless the girl we’re talking about is a lezbo, then their just a lezbos, and if the guys we’re talking ‘bout are gay, then they are just plain gay. As simple as that.”

“Okay. Sorry I didn’t know that.”

David and I were still walking to our new lockers while Cammie is having a freak show back there.

“Hey camcorder, are you coming?” David called back to her.

“Did you just call me camcorder again?!” Yeah, that knocked her out of that phase. I should change the subject, and fast.

“I heard that Alex Smith is gonna be in our next class and that he broke up with his old girlfriend, what’s her name? – Audrey White? Yeah, I think that’s it.”

“Okay. Bye Zack. Watch out Audrey, here comes Cammie Chloe Lockwood commin’ to get Alex Smith.” When Cam caught up to us, she said, “So, David, what’s your locker number?”

“Well, I am proud to say that it is - drum roll please - locker number 279b. 279 is my house number, and now my lucky number this year.” Yeah, you hear right. This year, as in, he gets a new favorite and lucky number every single year. Strange right?

“Cool. Wow, I don’t know how I could’ve ever missed this, did you get your hair dyed black and get a hair cut?”

“Yeah. Do you like it?” David asked.

“It’s really cute. Watch, you’re gonna attract everybody’s attention. You sure attracted mine.” I said. I wasn’t joking. He did look really cute today with his new haircut.

“Ha, thanks.” He blushed. “So…” David said.

“We need to go to the mall this weekend or something,” Cammie finished. Wow, I almost forgot that she was with us still.

“Hey, I was going to say that.” David said.

“Well, I guess great minds think alike,” I said.

“Sure, whatever. Do you know what I think is kinda strange?” Cammie said.

“No, what?” I said.

“That we haven’t really been over to your house. I mean, you’ve been over both of our houses but we haven’t been to yours.

“Yeah, that is kinda strange, but I don’t mind. If Scarlett doesn’t want us to go to her house then it’s totally cool with me.” David said.

I couldn’t help but to think about the discussion I had with Adrian today. Maybe I should tell them now.

“It’s not that I don’t want you guys to be there, because I do, really. I guess it’s just too weird for me. Nobody has ever been over my house before. And I kinda want it to stay like that. And plus, I have big dogs and you guys don’t really like big dogs so…” I trailed off.

“Yeah, we know… but I just think that it’s really strange that we’ve been friends for a while now and we still don’t know where you live and your house phone number. I know that we have your cell phone number but to me, it’s just not enough for me suddenly.”

“Cammie. Listen, if Scarlett doesn’t want to have us over, it’s cool. But lets not make it a big thing. I’ve known Scarlett since sixth grade, and I have wondered, really, I have, but just knowing that we will probably be friend forever, that’s enough for me. And every time I wonder something like that, I just keep thinking ‘bout how we will, I know it, that we’re gonna be friend forever; I just keep feeding off of that.” David said. Yeah. That’s why he’s one of my best friends. We’ve known each other for 'bout four years and he still doesn’t get tired of me.

“Sorry, Cammie. I don’t know, I just don’t feel comfortable with you guys coming over. It’s just weird for me. I never actually-” Then the bell rang. I let go of that breath that I didn’t even know that I was hold in. “Okay. So what class do you have today?” I said as fast as I could. He handed over his schedule to me.

“Good, so we have all classes together except science and math. So that’s cool,” I said.

“Yeah, so I’ll see you two in history. See ya!” he shouted down the hall as he was running toward math.

Then he disappeared down the hall. Actually that’s not too bad of an idea. When Cammie and I both couldn’t see him anymore, we started running the opposite direction.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

When science was over, we had history. David, Cammie, and I all met up in history class. I was over at Cammie’s desk; as Cammie and I were talking, David came up to us and whispered, “Hey, you guys wanna ditch at lunch. Y’know, grab some food and not come back to this place for the rest of the day.” Classic David.

“Sure. I see why not right? I mean we have all the important stuff in the morning. What are your thoughts, Scarlett?” asked Cammie.

“Ditching on the first day of school? I’ll pass but if you guys go out to lunch then I’ll go, but after that, can you guys please drop me back off?”

“What the fuck? Go and eat out then drop you off in this hell hole and then just go somewhere else with Cammie? No I’ll pass.”

“What’s wrong with me?” Cammie said in a defensive voice.

“Nothing. But it just doesn’t seem right without all of us. We’re the Three Musciteers for crying out loud! Just talking about without taking you along seems really wrong.” David explained.

“Yeah, it would seem really weird without you.” Cammie said

“So… are you two still gonna go out and ditch now?” I asked.

“Nah. There’ll be other days right? Maybe like, tomorrow?” David said.

“Don’t get your hopes up Davy.” I said with a smile on my face.

“Okay. So, hopefully she won’t give us a big lecture today. I mean, what the fruitcake woman?!”

“Ha. Oh… and here comes Mrs. Currie.” I said.

“Ssh… Everyone sit in your seats acting like perfect little angels!” Cammie said in a whisper. And at that, David and I both took our seats next to Cam.

“Hello everyone! My name is Mrs. Currie. I love to get to know you all and I’m hoping that this will be a fun year for both of us. Now, I don’t want to scare you guys or anything, but I take this class very seriously. Just think of this class as your lifeline. If you fail this class, you die, -” Oh. My. Fucking. God. Does this woman have bipolar or something’? Like really?! “-So, I do have an assignment for you all. I want you all to pair up in two or threes after I’m done talking. I want you to come up with some historical event in time sometime in the 1800’s through 2000’s. It’s due next Monday. I will give you all time in class to work on this project. I will give out daily effort grades; so don’t waste your time. The final project is worth two test grades and the daily effort is worth one homework grade. Please try to research at your house and if you don’t have a computer then go to the library or something. But whatever you do to get information I don’t really care, just get it done and don’t makeup your own history.” So… maybe this will be fun? At least I get to talk to David and Cammie as much as I want basically, even though I am in history class.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

By the time Mrs. Currie stopped talking, the bell rang. Well, that wasn’t exactly boring. It was kinda entertaining. Oh, whom am I kidding? That was so boring that I almost fell asleep in it. And to the looks of it, Cammie was actually sleeping in it. When David, Cammie, and I all got outta the classroom, we had a race to our next class, German. “Ready,” said David

“Set,” I said.

Then Cam said, “Go!” We started runnin’ in the hallway when someone got into Cammie’s way; Cammie tumbled over them. When I saw that she fell, I stopped to make sure that she was okay.

“Hey! Watch where you’re goin’!”

“Sorry.” She glanced up at whom she ran over. I didn’t recognize him. He has straight hair with curly ends. His hair is dirty blond that’s short and baby blue eyes. He has a white button down shirt and black jeans on. He’s pretty cute if you think about it.

“Oh, sorry Jared. I didn’t see you there.” Said Cammie.

“It’s okay. So, why were you running?"

“Scarlett, David, and I were racing to German class.”

“Ah, I see. And you guys just had to run because…” Okay… so I know that his name is Jared. But I don’t know how Cammie would know him. We don’t have any classes together, do we?

“I told you already. Because we were having a race. It’s our tradition. For the first week of school, we always have a race to German class, or if we have a different foreign language, then we would race there.”

“Ah… Aren’t you going to introduce me to your friend here?” He said nodding at my direction.

“Oh, sorry. Scarlett, meet Jared. Jared, meet Scarlett. The only reason I know him is because we are neighbors.” Cammie explained to me.

“Oh, hi Jared. You’re a junior, right?”

“Actually, no. I’m not. I’m a sophomore."

“Oh, do we have any classes together this year? 'Because, if I remember correctly, last year we had a class together, math I think.”

“Oh, I remember now. We were both in the second freshman class. I’m surprised I didn’t recognize you. So, about the schedule, I don’t know,” then he showed us his schedule.

“Oh. So, we don’t have any classes together. Well, we’ll probably see each other around school right? Now… where the fuck has David gone? Hey Cam, we need to get to class soon.”

“Oh, well it’s nice seeing you Jared.”

“You too, Scarlett, Cammie.” Then we started walking towards German class. Room 106.

“Cammie! Wait a minute!” Someone said. We both turned around; it was Jared running toward our direction.

“Hey Cammie, Scarlett. I was wondering… if I could get both of your numbers? - I mean, if I’m sick or I have to go somewhere maybe you guys could ask about my homework. I know that we have different classes, but maybe you could ask them about my class or somethin’?” Jared said. Cammie and I both looked at each other in shock; then we ripped a piece of paper and wrote down both of our numbers. “Thanks. So, I guess I’ll see you both at lunch? Maybe we could sit together.”

“Okay. Sounds cool,” I said. Then we started to walk off again. When Jared was out of earshot, I turned to her and said, “Oh, my God! You’re blushing. You like him? I mean, he’s handsome. And I’m sure that he doesn’t have a girlfriend. I mean, those type of guys, their nice and all, but they just worry ‘bout their grades a lot. Maybe you could tie him down. Y’know, show him that Cammie charm I know that is in ya.” I said.

“Shut up. But, I do kinda like him. But I think that we should just take one step at a time. And no, he isn’t handsome… he’s hot! With a capital H.” she said with a giggle. We laughed and then we came to a stop in the doorway of German class where David awaits us looking smug.

“Hey guys. -” He looked at his watch. “-Took you both long enough, wouldn’t you say?”

“Hey, for your information, David, Cammie tripped over her future boyfriend.” I said joking.

“Oh my God! Shut up he’s not my boyfriend… yet.” She said jokingly.

“Really? Was he cute? Who is it?” So many questions. Now where do we start?

“Yes, he was very handsome, and it was Jared Jameson” I said.

“Oh, so he went from just handsome to very handsome just like that? Wow Scarlett.” Then the bell rang. Time for German class to begin. Cammie, David, and I all took our seats next to each other. And here comes the teacher walking into the room. “Hello class. My name is Mrs. Becker. I will be your German teacher this year. I will give you German nicknames and every time you turn in something, you have to have your English first and last name as well as the German name I give you. Now everyone please take your seats and we will gladly get started.”

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

After German class, Cammie and David met me at my locker. "Mrs. Becker was really nice, wasn't she?" I said just to get a conversation started.

"Yeah. She surprisingly was. It was fun, too. We didn't even do like, anything,” Cammie said.

"Yeah, but she also said that it's not gonna be like that everyday. She just wanted to get to know us more."

"Yeah, but I have a feeling that German isn't gonna be hell like last year when we took Spanish." David said.

Then I grabbed my books and we headed toward David's locker.

"So..." I said.

"How 'bout Friday night after school we hang out at my house?" Cammie asked.

"Hurry up David, we won't have time to stop at Cammie's locker. Oh, yeah that sounds doable," I said.

"Hey, I'm moving as fast as I can, Scarlett. Oh, and yeah, sounds good to me, Cammie."

"Okay, cool." Cammie said

When David finally was done at his locker, we moved onto Cammie's.

"So, what do you think we're gonna do in photography?" I said.

"I don't know. She'll probably go over the rules and stuff,” said Cammie.

“Yeah, well we probably should go right now or we'll be late," David said.

"Wow, since when did you care if we’re late or not to class?" Cammie said

"Hey, photography is my favorite subject. Easy ‘A.’”

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

As we were walking toward the cafeteria, I said, "I'm starving. How 'bout you guys?"

"Yeah, I wish we just had a half day and then go home. But too bad that-” David was interrupted when someone came running behind us. "Hey David, you wanna sit with us today?"

"Who exactly is 'us’?" David said to him.

"You know, me, you, Kevin, and Tony. So, how 'bout it?" David turned to Cammie and me. "Is it okay if I sit with them today?"

"Yeah, totally. So, see ya in creative writing." I said.

"Okay, see ya later." David said.

"Bye girls," David's friend said with a smirk.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

After we got our lunches and found an empty table, Cammie and I both sat down on opposite sides. "So, do you like Jared?"

"Sure, I guess. I mean, we've been friends for like, forever it seems. He's a really good friend."

"Oh, so that's it? No details for your friend, Scarlett?" I joked.

"Well, what kind of details do you want then?"

"Well... let me ponder this for a while. I want to know, what's he like, do you like him as friends or more than friends, how long have you've known him, and how do you know him?"

"He's really nice. He's shy at times but he can really talk a lot. I like him as a friend, but I do hope that someday he opens his eyes and know who I really am and what I'm really about."

"And what 'bout how you know him and how long have you known him?"

"Well, you know that I've moved here when I was five and he had already been living in the neighborhood so, basically for all of my life. And I already told you when I ran him over, we're neighbors."

"Okay. So how about-"

"Ssh, here he comes. I wish it was easy for me to talk to him."

"You can. Hey, Jared!" Cammie grabbed my arm across the table.

"What do you think you're doing!?” Cammie whispered.

"I’m gonna make it easier for you to talk to him."

"Hey," said Jared.

"I was wondering if you would like to sit with us for lunch today."

"Sure sounds good."

"So, I love your tie. I don't know, I'm like, obsessed with wearing ties. Do you mind me asking you if I could try it on?"

"Yeah. I mean, I don’t mind," he handed me his tie.

"Thanks. So, what kind of music do you listen to?" I said while trying to figure out how to tie it.

"I listen to mostly rock and some alternative."

"Cool, I listen to alternative, rock, and some metal."

"And you, Cammie?" Jared asked.

"Oh, I listen to some pop, rock, some rap, and alternative. So like, Colbie Caillat, Jason Derulo, Ke$ha, Never Shout Never, Paramore, VV Brown, and B.o.B.”

“Cool. I’ve never heard of B.o.B. before. Hey, you need help? I can just loosen it on me then I’ll give it back to you.” Jared offered.

“Um, that would be nice and really? You’ve never heard of B.o.B.? Well, I can’t say that I completely know who he is but still. At least you’ve heard of him, right?” I handed him back the tie.

“Well, I don’t have any brothers, only one sisters. But she’s a lot older then me. Her name is Julie and she’s twenty-one. She doesn’t listen to rap, she mostly listens to country and pop. She loves Taylor Swift and Kellie Pickler. Have you guys ever heard of All Time Low?”

“Yeah. I haven’t really listened to them in a while. But Cammie’s like, a huge fan of them.”

“Yeah, I love them. I went to their concert, it was awesome.”

“Yeah, I bet.” Jared said

“Have you ever heard of Black Veil Brides? It’s one of my favorite bands of all time.” I said.

“Actually, no. I haven’t. What songs do they have?”

“’Knives and Pens’, ‘Perfect Weapons’, ‘The Mortician’s Daughter’, and more. Too many to name them all, but those are probably my favorites out of all of them.”

“No, Scarlett. All of their songs are your favorite. You’re basically obsessed with them.”

“Hey, their a huge inspiration to me. I just love all of their stories, and plus, most of them aren’t that much older then us.”

“Yeah, but you have to admit, their kinda scary.”

“No they aren’t. Not if you just look behind what you see, they aren’t.”

“Okay, well, I’ll try that sometime. But yeah, I have to admit, their music is awesome.”

“Sweet. I’ll look them up later.” Jared said.

“Okay. So…” I said.

“Um, what college do you think you want to go to?” asked Cammie.

“I think I want to go to University of Delaware. I mean, it’s all the way across country, but I think that that would be fun.”

“Yeah, it’s really far away. Only once I’ve been to Delaware, and that was on vacation with Cammie’s family. Well, my parent’s didn’t, just me. It was really fun. More freedom. I hate being under strict rules. I’m someone who would rather go exploring the world than go to college. I mean, if college is only for review and stuff, then why would I have to go? My plan is to do some college, but not to do all four years. I might go to a community college or I would want to go somewhere in Canada to get my bachelor degree in photography.” I said.

“Yeah, and I want to go somewhere close to here, to my family. But I do really want to get my degree in photography. When David, Scarlett, and I became friends, our friendship revolved all around that. We all want to go get our photography degree together. And there are some great colleges in Canada that specializes in that.” Said Cammie. Jared nodded and looked really interested in what we both had to say. “When we get out of high school, we all want to rent an apartment together. And if we don’t get into the same college, we would just find a different college close to there. Sure, we might have to drive more, but at least we will see each other a lot. And really, their friendship means the world to me. I don’t think I could have ever went through high school and still be as solid as I am now.”

“Wow Cammie. I didn’t know that you were that deep,” I joked.

“Yeah, I actually shocked myself, too.”

“So, this subject is kinda making me a little, um, uncomfortable. Can we change the subject?” I asked.

“Um, so, do you guys have any pets? Or what’s your favorite animal?” Jared asked.

“My favorite animal is a wolf. And I have two dogs, Bear and Killer. Their Welsh Corgis.” I said.

“I have a dog, named Zoe and a cat, named Smokey. Zoe’s a black lab and Smokey is just a mean old black cat. Well, she’s sometimes nice, but she likes to bite me so.”

“Oh, I have one dog and his name is Jack. He’s a Beagle.”

“Oh my God. I love Beagles. How old is he?” I said.

“He’s about one.”

“Oh, my dog is about three.” Cammie said.

“So, would you like to hang out sometime this weekend?” I asked.

“Sure.”

“Maybe three thirty at the Pier39 on Sunday?”

“Okay.”

“Cammie, do you think that Mark could take us?”

“Yeah, I mean, he doesn’t have a job and he’s still living at home so why not?”

“Okay. So call me tonight, okay?”

“Yup.” said Cammie.

“Sure,” said Jared.

For the rest of the lunch period, we didn’t really talk much. We made little small talk but that was it.

Next class. Room 109. We met David and his friend, Kevin in Creative Writing. “Hey, guys. Had a nice lunch?” I said in my sweetest voice I could manage.

“Hell, yeah. Did you two princesses have a nice lunch?” Kevin said.

“Yup. We got a date.” I gloated.

“Ooh, threesome. Mine if I make it a foursome?”

Ugh, this guy discuses me. “Actually. It’s already a foursome. But sorry, I’m afraid that we don’t have enough room in the bed for a five some.” I smirked.

“Well played.”

“I know.”

“So, whose it with?” David asked.

I leaned over his desk and whispered, “Two words: Jared Blake.”

“Really?” I guess David just can’t believe it.

“Really. We’re meeting at the Pier39 on Sunday at three thirty. Sharp.” Cammie said.

“Sharp? When did I say that? After all, I was basically the only one talking the whole time at lunch.”

“Just thought that I’d spice things up.”

“Cammie, that’s not ‘spicing things up.’” David said.

“I know but all well.”

“Whatever. So, you wanna come? And yes, Kevin, there’s enough room in the bed.” We laughed.

“Sure. Actually, you have your license, don’t you?”

“Yeah, why?”

“Could you pick me at my friend’s house?”

“Sure. Where does your friend live?”

“Tell ya later. Text me. –“ I ripped a piece of paper off from my notebook. “It’s 415-485-4257.”

“Okay, so what-.” Kevin was cut off when the teacher walked in.

“Hello, class. Please take your seats. –“ We all took our seats next to each other. David sat at the end, then Kevin, then me, and then Cammie. “-My name is Mrs. Welsh-“

I leaned over to Kevin and said, “Hey, that’s my dog’s breed! Welsh Corgi!” He snickered.

“- And I will be teaching creative writing this year. Because this is creative writing, you will all be assigned on a topic. It won’t be like Pearl Harbor or the Civil War or anything like that. It will be on you. I will assign you a topic randomly out of a hat. It will mostly be something like writing your life story. It doesn’t all have to be true but I want some of it to be true on whatever topic you pick. Some people can concentrate better with noise, like music and some people can only concentrate with silence. So if your one of those people, who can concentrate better with music, bring your mp3 play and make sure there’s headphones. This class is not goofing off time. Each quarter I will assign you a different topic and for the last quarter, I will assign you to one partner. Today we’re just going to assign partners and then I will go over the directions. So please line up in front of my desk and you will then choose your fate.”
Why did she say fate? It’s not like this is a life or death situation, I thought.

Study hall was next. So boring. I don’t even know why they have study hall here. It’s not like we get homework. This school is so weird, but it’s pretty fun. This year, we’re going to New York City for our end of the year field trip, and next year, we’re going to England. Yeah, England! With all the cute guys and British accents. Well, you can get British accents in Canada, but still. England is where they originate. Hmmm, now I wonder if I can sneak out of here. Just go home.

I sent David a text message saying, Hey David do U want 2 skip SH? ~Scarlett

Ya TXT Cammie ~David Wow, he replied fast.

When I got to David’s car, David and Cammie were already there.

“How’d you guys get there so fast?” I asked.

“We ran, duh, Scarlett.”

“Oh. Well I didn’t want to get all sweaty. And plus, I’m in three inch ankle boots, do you think I could run?”

“I’ll give you ten bucks if you run to that lamp and back to my car.” Ooh, he’s gonna get it.
“How ‘bout you give me the money now, and I’ll drive?”

“You? Drive? No offence but I kinda wanna be alive when I get to my house,” Cammie said.
“Whatever. Lets just go before someone catches us,” I said.

“Sure,” David said.

“Is anyone hungry? Let’s stop at Café Francisco?”

“Sure.” David said.

“Oh, and just to make clear, I’m not paying for all of you. Just for me.” I said.

“Yeah, that makes perfect sense. The friend that suggested it doesn’t even pay for it.” Cammie said.

“Sorry, I’m not rich, but I do have enough to buy all of us tuna salads.”

“Then we’ll all get tuna salads.” David said.

“Fine.” Cammie said.

Hey, I hope you liked it. The numbers are not real so please do not text or call them. The second chapter will be up probably sometime next week and is titled Cammie's Date.

FYI: This IS COPYRIGHTED so please do not steal my work. My friend and I have worked really hard on editing it and making sure it makes sense. And if you do decide to steal it... Then I hope you have running shoes on, cuz' THE COPS ARE ON YO ASS!

~Scarlett

p.s. The character's name has nothing to do with mine. Scarlett is just my writing name so don't think that I'm vain or anything, I just like the name Scarlett.
