The Test

the best in town

Dear Winter,

Words cannot explain how cold I am, or even the depths of this feeling.

It's only October, how did you find me so fast? Autumn is yet to pass, yet your greed fills my insides already. My heart is numb now, so your work is done. Time's up, go home, let me out of your claws.

I imagine you as a strong, nimble man, silent and empowering, the icy grip like a vice around my shoulders. You whisper to me sometimes, but I am forbidden from replying. I take a one way street as you lie in the pit of my stomach.

I've read stories about you, sir. You go by so many names - Jack Frost, Old Man Winter - but never would I have guessed you are merely a representative of your season. Markings on the calendar are thrown aside under your reign, and it is the cores of the people upon which you feed.

The leaves outside are still a vibrant shade of red, now decorated with scraps of gold and dirty brown, and the air is refreshing and pleasant. It's only October, how did you find me so fast?

Let me go.

Yours sincerely,

William.
