Deer in the Headlights

One of Two

Met a girl in the parking lot,
And all I did was say, “Hello.”
Her pepper spray made it rather hard,
for me to walk her home!

But I guess that’s the way it goes...

“Bye Usher,” Justin shouted behind him as he left the recording studio.

“See ya JB,” he answered back.

Justin shut the door to the recording studio behind him and began to walk down the hallway. Then his phone vibrated in his pocket signaling a new text.

hey babe date tonight? your house? ;)

Justin rolled his eyes at his girlfriend Selena. All she ever wanted to do was make-out with him. And don’t get me wrong, he liked that but he was also the type to want to do more than just be sexual.

He walked down to the hallway and went down the stairs. He didn’t like elevators because of his slight case of claustrophobia.

Then he went out the door and into the reception area to exit the building. He said goodbye to the two girls behind the reception desk.

“Hey Justin!” Cammy said cheerfully to him.

Cammy was pretty with brunette hair and glasses. She was studious and her bangs made her look her age which was twenty-two.

“Hey Cam, and Sam,” he added to the blonde.

“Hey Justin,” she smiled.

Samantha was also pretty. She was kind of ditzy but fun all the same. She was only nineteen.

“Oh Justin, guess what!” Sam said happily.

He walked up to the counter and crossed his arms on it, “Yeah?”

“We are hiring a new girl,” she said, sitting at the desk.

“Really?” he asked.

“Yeah, her name is Cole,” Cammy added, “She just left from the interview. Cute redhead. She’s 16,” Cammy eyed Justin in that playful way.

“What?” he laughed.

“Maybe you should get to know her,” she hinted.

He rolled his eyes, “I know you guys don’t like Selena but do you really need to try so hard to get me to dump her?”

“Yes!” they said at the same time.

He rolled his eyes playfully and smiled as he turned and said, “Goodbye ladies.”

“Bye Justin,” they said.

As he pushed the revolving door, making sure not to run into the glass again, the door jammed. He immediately panicked. He searched for the cause and hoped he could fix it and his eyes landed on a set of car keys stuck in the corner on the floor. He pulled them out with one good tug and made his way out of the small space.

Once outside he took a deep breath and looked down at the keys in his hand.

They were Hyundai keys and had a house key and a key chain from New York city.

He pondered a moment and wondered who’s they were. He looked around the parking lot and soon his eyes laid on a girl over by her car frantically searching her purse.

He assumed it was that Cole girl, the girls inside had been talking about because even though her back was turned, her hair which was up in a tight bun with chopsticks was bright natural red.

He smiled and decided to go see if these were her keys.

He waltzed up behind her and heard her voice saying to herself, “No, no, no, no, mom’s gonna kill me...”

Once he was really close to her he said, “Excuse me?”

She screamed and like a reflex she pulled out some pepper spray from her purse and sprayed it at him.

It immediately burned his eyes and he yelled in pain, falling to the ground.

Then once she got a good look at him it had registered to her who he was.

She gasped and got down on her knees, trying to avoid her blue pencil skirt going up, and started saying, “Oh my god! I’m sorry! I didn’t know it was you Mr. Bieber!”

Even in pain he noticed how she called him Mr. Bieber and he thought that was odd.

He kept rubbing his eyes and tears ran out of them like rainfall. Soon the pain began to wear off and his vision began to come back into focus.

Once it did too he looked up and the first thing he saw was her eyes. Dark blue like sapphires. It took him a second to snap out of it so he could say, “I’m Justin.”

She blinked and snapped out of the trance she was in too and said, “Oh sorry, um, Justin.”

She was shy he could tell.

He smiled and rubbed his eyes once again and sat up.

“I was just trying to ask you if these were your keys,” he held up the set of keys and she gasped and smiled, snatching the keys out of his hand.

“Oh my gosh! Thank you so much! I thought I had lost those again. And if I did my parents would have killed me!” she grinned and stood and pressed the unlock button making the car snap its locks open.

He laughed.

“Oh!” she turned back to him and offered her hand to help him up. He took it and she pulled him up, almost falling with the heels she had on.

Once he stood up he had the chance to check her out.

She was beautiful. Long legs, she was tan and still had her freckles, her red hair was all natural and you could tell, she was petite and fragile looking, but also soft and classy.

He smirked and slipped his hands in his pockets, going straight into flirt mode and forgetting he even had a girlfriend.

“So are you Cole? Cam and Sam told me about you,” he asked casually.

“Oh yes thats me, nice to meet you,” she stuck out her hand and he took it carefully and they shook. She was polite.

“I’m Justin,” he said with a smile.

“Oh I already know who you are, my little sister is obsessed with you,” she laughed.

He smirked again, “And are you?”

She began to laugh, “No, I’m not, sorry.”

She turned and opened her car door.

“Hey where are you going?” he asked, his expression changing to confusion. She was just going to leave in the middle of a conversation?

“Home,” she answered simply, “After all, we’ll have plenty of time to talk when you come back to the studio again, considering I’ll be working at the reception desk,” she smiled.

“Oh, okay,” he had never had a girl just up and leave like she was.

“Oh, and I’m so sorry about the pepper spray!” she frowned, “And you may wanna go home and wash your eyes out,” she walked up and touched near the corner of his left eye, “They are kind of red now.”

Her touch sent adrenaline throughout his body and went she backed away, climbed into her car, and started it he smiled and said, “See you soon then?”

“Whenever you want to see me,” she began to back her car out and flashed a smile as she drove off.

Justin turned to walk out to his car and all he could think about was getting back to the studio tomorrow.

Tell me again, was it love at first sight?
When I walked by and you caught my eye.
Didn’t you know love could shine this bright.
Well smile because you’re the deer in the headlights.

On the drive home Cole analyzed her encounter with Justin Bieber. After all she was a girl and girls analyze everything whether they realize it or not.

It was true what she had said about her little sister. Her little sister, Ariel, was indeed obsessed with Justin Bieber. She constantly listened to his music, wore his t-shirts, had his posters everywhere in her room, and would bring him up in casual conversation from one line or word.

For a twelve year old, she was pretty loyal.

So living in the same house as a ‘belieber’ who was dying of ‘bieber fever’, Cole couldn’t help but know who he was.

The only thing she had thought about Bieber boy, before their run-in, was that he was cute. Ok maybe closer to hot than cute, but still good-looking all the same.

And that was pretty much all she still felt for him now. And maybe even a little annoyance because she saw how he checked her out with those hungry eyes all guys get. She hated that.

Cole was a picky girl when it came to boys. She was mostly just annoyed by them. She preferred to read a good romance novel or ace a test before she ever thought of dating. That was just how she was. Studious, smart, nerdy, and addicted to being the brainiac.

But she couldn’t push away the thought of how gorgeous his eyes were. She felt a tug when she looked into them the first time, like someone had pulled a heartstring. And little did she know Justin had had the same experience.

But by the time she arrived back at her house she had established in her mind that Justin Bieber was just like any other boy; one to avoid.

Met a girl with a graceful charm,
But when Beauty met the beast,
he froze.
Got the sense I was not her type,
By black eye and bloody nose...

The next day back at the studio, Cole was starting her first day on the job.

“We are so excited to have another friend on staff!” Sam said cheerfully, when Cole set her stuff down at her new desk.

Sam gave her a hug and Cole laughed, “Thanks guys!”

Cam laughed too, “Sam let her be to get herself settled in!”

Cole laughed and pushed her glasses up her nose a little and got to work putting everything neatly in its place in or on her desk.

Her photo of her and her family on top next to her phone, her pencils, pens, markers, post it notes, scissors, and other desk supplies in their intended drawers. She had many different creative things hung up on the little wall where the counter went up from her desk. She even set her clock on her desk too.

She was ready and prepared for whatever this job was going to throw at her.

“Cam, I think she’s more organized than you are,” Sam said from behind her.

Cam laughed, “That’s why I hired her! She’s going to do great!”

Cole smiled, “Thanks guys, I’m glad I get to work with such nice people. Other places I’ve worked, I couldn’t stand my co-workers.”

The girls smiled, “We hope to be your friends and not your enemies. After all I met Cam here and now we are like sisters. Joined at the hip most of the time.”

Cam grinned, “Oh yes, and we hope we can add you to our friendship. We can be like the three amigos!”

Cole was flattered. After all she never really had a best friend. So if these girls could help her with that she would be honored, “Awesome! That would be great! Count me in!”

They all smiled and then the phone on Cam’s desk rang, “Hello Island Def Jam Records recording studio. Oh hello, Luda!”

Cole was amazed. She was talking on the phone with Ludacris and she sounded like she was talking to her favorite cousin.

“Of course, I’ll ask him right away and get him to contact you. Bye bye now!”

Cole stared at her and said, “This. Job. Is. Amazing.”

The girls laughed all together, “You’ll get used to it!” Sam said getting up with her hot pink coffee mug to get more coffee, “Anybody need anything from the lunchroom?”

“Nah, I’m good,” Cam said.

“Cole? You?”

“Um, yeah could you get me a mocha latte with extra caramel and no whip cream?” she asked politely.

“I love this girl,” Sam grinned and skipped off.

Cam and Cole chuckled and turned back to their desks, then the revolving door spun and Justin walked in.

“Hey Justin!” Cam said cheerfully without even looking up.

“I still don’t understand how you can know it’s me without even looking up,” he said walking up to the counter.

He glanced over at Cole who was ignoring him.

“I can smell your cologne when you walk in,” Cam laughed.

She looked at him and saw him looking at Cole, “Oh! Yeah, Justin this is Cole.”

“We’ve met,” Cole said, and she looked up at him and gracefully pushed a strand of her hair out of her face.

“Oh really?” Cam’s eyes got wide, “When?”

Justin chuckled, “Yesterday, I found her keys and went to return them when she sprayed my eyes with pepper spray.”

Cam burst out laughing.

“What’s so funny? Oh hey Justin,” Sam said walking back from the lunchroom.

“Hey Sam.”

“Justin got sprayed in the face with pepper spray by Cole yesterday when he tried to return her keys,” Cam said, still giggling.

Sam laughed too, “Way to go, Cole!” Sam said as she set her drink on her desk and high-fived her new friend.

“Hey!” Justin frowned.

Cole was smiling as she looked back at Justin and said, “Well at least your eyes look better!” she smirked at him.

He playfully glared and she turned away from him again. She had a notebook out and was drawing or writing stuff. He couldn’t quite make out what it was though.

He was beginning to lean really far over the counter when Sam startled him and he sprang back, “So! Justin, what brings you back to the studio? I didn’t think you had another recording session to do.”

He started to freak out mentally. He really didn’t have a good reason to be here.

“Um,” he started, he needed to come up with something and fast.

“I actually was told I should be coming in today so I don’t know,” he said. That was vague enough, right?

“Well that’s odd, we don’t have you down today in any of the studios,” Cam said looking at her calendar.

Justin scoffed, “It was probably Dan playing a prank on me. Well, now I have nothing better to do!” he smiled and walked around behind the counter and sat next to Cole in another chair.

“What exactly are you doing?” she asked him, turning her head to look at him. He was leaning against the table with a smug look on his face.

“Just chillin’,” he stated, “I’ve got nothing better to do today so can I hang with you guys?”

“At the reception desk? Who are you and what have you done with Justin Bieber?” Sam asked rhetorically.

The girls snickered and Justin just chuckled too.

“You’re welcome to do what ever you want Justin,” Cam answered and she answered the phone again when it rang.

“I still say it’s because you like her,” Sam sung in a hushed tone. Justin glared at her back.

Cole had gone back to doodling in her notebook and now that Justin was sitting next to her he could properly eavesdrop on her.

He leaned in and was looking at her paper for awhile until she said, “What exactly are you doing?”

“Looking at your notebook,” he answered simply, no reason to lie.

She scoffed, “And what exactly are you planning to accomplish?”

He pondered a moment for a smart ass answer and he came up with one, “I’m trying to find the meaning of life,” he said sarcasm dripping off his tone.

She laughed, “Good luck with that.”

He began watching her again and found that she was sketching the way her desk looked. Her clock, her picture frame, the couple pens she had, the computer, and the little lamp.

“Why are you sketching your desk?” he asked, slightly confused.

“I’m bored,” she answered plainly.

“Well good because one of the managers in studio 3D needs his coffee delivered to him,” Cam said in response to her statement.

“Sweet,” Cole chirped and she shut her notebook and put it in her drawer.

“He wants his coffee black,” Cam told her as she stood and went into the lunch room.

Justin decided to follow, “Coming with me?” she asked him.

“Yes,” he answered and sped up to be by her side, “Don’t want you getting lost.”

“I wouldn’t get lost,” she scoffed. She went over to the coffee machine and poured some coffee into a styrofoam cup and put a lid on it. She grabbed a creamer and sugar just in case.

“Well, I’m still coming with you,” he said, and he followed her out of the room and she went for the staircase.

Justin wondered why she didn’t go for the elevator, “Why didn’t you go with the elevator?”

She didn’t respond for a second as she walked up the stairs, “I’d rather get exercise.”

He knew that was a fake answer just by the tone of her voice, “Now, give me the real answer. If you want me to be honest too I’m glad you didn’t, I’m slightly claustrophobic.”

She stopped above him, “You are?” she asked, curiously.

“Yeah,” he answered, he never usually went out and told people that but with her, he just felt comfortable.

“Oh,” she chirped, she began to walk up the stairs again, “Well, it’s because I have a fear of elevators. I have panic attacks when I go in them,” she was quiet when she gave that answer.

“Hm,” he hummed, then he smiled and answered, “Well, I’m glad we are so honest with each other,” he had looked up at her and watched her walk up the stairs.

He couldn’t help but notice how graceful she was. She was climbing stairs in stilettos! Her long red pony tail swung back and forth, and of course he had to look at how her clothes accented every curve. And her legs were smooth and long.

Finally though they reached the third floor, and walked out into the hallway.

“Three D is at the end over there,” he told her.

“Don’t tell me what to do!” she joked.

He smiled and they walked down to the end of the hallway. She gently knocked on the door and sweetly answered, “Coffee delivery!”

The door opened and a younger man stood there, he looked about twenty-seven and behind him sitting at a large desk with all kinds of knobs, buttons, and things was another man who looked about thirty. There was also an african american man standing other to the side.

“Well hello,” the guy who answered the door said, “You must be new.”

“Yes, I’m Cole,” she offered her hand and they shook.

“Come in, please,” he offered and they stepped inside the studio.

As they walked in Justin couldn’t help but notice how the guy’s eyes were wondering to places on Cole that they shouldn’t be. And that angered him.

“Here’s your coffee,” she bent down to set it on the table.

Justin watched the guy and saw where his eyes went.

“I brought you creamer and sugar, just in case,” she smiled at them.

The guy smirked, “Well thank you, little lady.”

Justin was infuriated once he saw the other guys eyes look straight at Cole’s breasts. So he did what he thought was best.

“Well, Cole needs to get back downstairs, she has some more deliveries to make. It was nice meeting you all!” he said as he took ahold of her small hand and dragged her towards the door.

“What? Justin-,” she was cut off by him saying, “Have a nice day!”

And they were out the door and he shut it behind them.

“What was that all about?!” she asked once they were out in the hallway. She looked down at their hands and yanked hers back.

He rolled his eyes and said, “You didn’t notice how that doucher was looking right at your ass? And your boobs?”

“Um, no!” she said, and she began to walk back over to the stairwell.

“Well he was and it was absolutely disgusting!” he said following her.

They opened the door to the stairwell and she began walking down the stairs, “Well, why are you so concerned about who is looking at me anyways?”

She had caught him there, “Psh, I’m not.”

They had made it down to the flat part where another door for a floor was and she turned to look at him with a grin on her face, “You’re so jealous.”

He scoffed, “Jealous? Me? I have a girlfriend, for your information,” he crossed his arms.

She threw her head back and laughed, “Girlfriend? Ok, we all know having a girlfriend never stops a guy from checking out other girls too,” she put a hand on her hip.

He frowned, he was screwed. She was on to him.

“Just admit it Bieber,” she said getting closer to him, her voice was low, “You, were, jealous.”

She was dangerously close, Justin could smell her perfume, it smelled familiar too. Her lips shined with the gloss she had on.

“Ok, maybe I was, what are you going to do about it?” he whispered.

Her eyes got slightly wider and the smile disappeared from her lips, “I’m not going to do anything,” she answered simply.

And that’s when it happened.

She was too close to the next stair that when she took the slightest step back she fell. Justin tried to catch her, but that only managed to get him to fall down the stairs too.

So they both tumbled down a flight of stairs and once they were at the bottom, they laid on the floor in pain.

Luckily, the stairs were carpeted which made them slightly less painful than they could have been.

Justin lay next to her with his hand on his eye.

“You kicked me in the face,” he mumbled.

She looked over at him and simply rolled her eyes.

She sat up and there was a pounding in her head, she felt something trickling out of her nose. She knew what it was.

“Oh no!” she said, she pinched her nose with her fingers and ran out the door on the second floor to the nearest bathroom.

Justin just stood and stretched out his back. He followed her and waited outside the door.

She came back out with a wad of paper towels that was turning red.

“I have a nose bleed, you’re probably going to get a black eye,” she mumbled and they made their way back downstairs.

Justin mentally groaned, the press was going to have a field day with this.

Once they got back downstairs they went straight into the lunch room.

“You are going to need some ice for that,” she said, “Sit,” she ordered him and he did as she told.

She got a towel out of a drawer and went over to the freezer and pulled out some ice cubes and put them in the towel. She went over and sat in front of him and gently pressed the ice against the side of his face. He winced and them let out a deep breath when the cold finally helped the bruise.

He reached his hand up and put it on top of hers. They just looked at each other for a second. Then they began to laugh. They both knew they looked completely terrible and that was funny to them.

Justin lightly squeezed her hand and she just smiled, keeping the paper towel at her nose.

“Whoa!” came a voice and Cole snapped her hand back taking the ice pack with her.

“What happened to you guys?!” Cam asked, she had just walked in.

Cole handed the ice back to Justin who put it back on his eye.

“We fell down the stairs,” she answered.

“Cole fell first, I tried to catch her, and I went down too,” Justin answered leaning against the table.

Cam began to laugh, “Sam! Get in here and see this!” she shouted out to her friend.

Sam came in saying, “See wha-, oh wow.”

Then Sam and Cam were both standing there laughing.

“Um, guys,” Cole said, it stop them, “GUYS!” she shouted.

“What? Sorry,” Sam said.

“Is there anything you need?” Cam said, the smile still on her face.

“Do you know where there’s any ibuprofen? I have a headache,” Cole asked.

“I need some too, my back hurts,” Justin chimed in.

“Sure,” Sam went over to the cabinet and pulled out some pills she poured some into her hand and got some water for the both of them.

They took their pills and sighed, “Thanks,” they mumbled.

“Welcome!” Sam said happily.

But I guess that’s the way it goes...

Even with the pain he was in, Justin couldn’t help but look at Cole with admiration. He still couldn’t find a flaw with her. He watched her as she laid her head down on the table and closed her eyes.

Her bangs fell on her forehead, her freckles were spread across her cheeks, and it didn’t look like she was wearing any makeup. She didn’t need any though. Her cheeks were rosy without help.

Then he remembered he wanted to ask her something, “By the way, are you wearing my perfume?” he asked.

“What?” she snapped, her face got pinker, “No, why would you think that?”

He smiled, he knew she was, “You just smelled familiar.”

He was definitely falling for this girl. Hard and fast.

Tell me again, was it love at first sight?
When I walked by and you caught my eye.
Didn’t you know love could shine this bright.
Well smile because you’re the deer in the headlights.

The next day was, of course, just as crazy as ever when Justin and Cole were together.

“I can’t believe this,” Sam laughed, “Justin they think you got in a fight with a manager or something. And they are starting all these rumors about how Selena is going to break up with you for being so aggressive!”

Cam began to laugh too as she rolled over to Sam’s desk to see the magazine she was holding.

“It’s only been a day and they are already starting rumors?!” he asked, he leaned over the girls to see the magazine too.

“Well, I’m glad I’m not involved,” Cole mumbled to herself, but Sam responded to that statement.

“Oh, actually you are,” she stated.

“What?!” her and Justin both shouted at the same time.

Cole walked over and snatched the magazine away from all of them.

“Hey!” they said.

She looked over the article and, indeed, there was a picture of her and Justin down in the corner from in the parking lot two days ago.

“Or does this mysterious red-head have something to do with Justin’s injuries? Selena! You might have competition! Everyone knows a guy loves a girl who puts up a fight.”

“Oh sweet jesus,” she mumbled and covered her face with her hand. She held out the magazine to them again with the other.

She sat back down at her desk and laid her head down.

“Poor Cole,” Cam hummed, “Her first magazine appearance is hard for her.”

“I wouldn’t be so upsetting if they didn’t think I was a man stealer!” she mumbled with her head still down.

Justin sighed and went and sat by her like he usually did, “Well, if it’s any consolation; Selena and I broke up yesterday.”

“What!?” Cam and Sam said at the same time, snapping their heads towards him.

“Yes, its over, you can celebrate,” he said simply.

“Yes!” Sam said, pulling her arm and fist in towards her like you do when you win something. Cam elbowed her, “Ow?” she said.

“Sam, Justin’s feelings are hurt!”

“No they aren’t actually,” Justin chuckled, “She was starting to get on my nerves anyways.”

Cole had turned her head to look up at him and was just staring at his face. He looked back down at her and asked, “What?”

“Huh?” she asked, like she was staring off into space, “Oh, nothing,” she said once she realized what he had said. She turned her head back and looked elsewhere.

“Uh, huh,” Cam said looking at them funny, “And you guys are trying to hide it,” she laughed and went back to her computer. Sam chuckled along with her.

The rest of the day went pretty normally. Justin tagged along with Cole wherever she went and he got all defensive if any guy was looking at her inappropriately. He annoyed the crap out of her at every chance he got. It was at the end of the day when it got weird.

“Well, it’s nine, I’m clocking out,” Cole said standing from her desk. Cam was the only one still here; and Justin of course but he was asleep on the table next to Cole’s desk. Sam had clocked out an hour ago.

Cole gently smacked Justin’s shoulder and he groaned, “Five more minutes.”

“Yo, pretty boy, it’s nine o’clock at night and you need to get home to your momma,” Cole laughed.

“Eh, my momma is fine without me,” he said, sitting up and rubbing his eyes. He ran a hand through his hair as he stretched and Cole just picked up her jacket and purse but kept her eyes on him.

“I think I’m gonna call it a day too,” Cam said as she shut off her computer.

They all walked around the counter and headed for the door.

Once they were out in the parking lot Cole shouted over her shoulder, “Have a good weekend, Cam!”

“You too, Cole! And Justin!” she replied, a yawn escaping her lips.

“See ya Cam,” Justin answered happily.

Cam got in her car and started it and was driving away as Justin followed Cole over to her car.

“Oh the memories,” Justin playfully sighed.

“Oh you should shut up or I’m gonna spray you again,” she glared at him jokingly.

They laughed and she opened her car door and got in.

Justin knocked on the window after she started her car and she rolled it down.

“What do you want, Bieber?” she asked, a smirk played on her face.

He leaned against her car and stuck his head in the window to be closer to her, “Since I’m newly single, I wanted to know if you would like to go on a proper date with me,” he asked.

She smiled, “Well, I’ll have to think about it.”

She turned her head back up towards him and before she knew what was happening, Justin had leaned in and pressed his lips on hers. It took her a second to register what was happening and then her eye lids fluttered shut and she felt his hand come up and cup her cheek.

He pulled away but kept his face close to hers, “Take all the time you need,” he smiled and started to walk away over to his Range Rover.

He turned though before he got in his car, “Oh, and don’t lie, you’re wearing my perfume.”

And that was that. He climbed in his car, started it up, gave her a wink, and drove off.

Cole was baffled and she sat in the parking lot for a little while before she actually got the energy to drive back home.
