The next day at school when Liam would smile at Scarlett in the halls, just to be friendly, she would crinkle her nose and her eyes would get all glassy and she would turn around and run the other way so fast Liam thought he’d see skid marks. He worried about Scarlett, because even though she was Jase’s and she could kiss him in the halls and not get beaten up for it afterwards, she was still a pretty, nice girl who he didn’t want to see upset.

Now that he thought about it, if Scarlett ever found out what he did with Jase her heart would break in two. But he pushed the thought from his mind.

When he finally cornered her in by her locker after the last bell had rung, he’d said, “Scarlett, is something wrong?” and she just shook her head furiously and wiped her eyes with the back of her hand and said, “It’s nothing you can help with,” and she slammed her locker door shut and sulked away from him.

And that was that.
