Carry Us Away

Well what would you expect to say?

Gabrielle:

Garrett parked a few blocks down from the house. He eyed me nervously. “I don’t know about this.” He admitted.

I laughed, got out of the car, and met him in front of the driver’s seat once he got out. “Relax, Gare Bear, you’re with me.”

He let out a nervous chuckle, “That’s what scares me the most.”

I frowned.

We started to walk next to each other. Close enough to tell we were coming to the party together yet far enough to tell we weren’t dating. Garrett turned to me, “Oh, and please don’t call me Gare Bear. My mom calls me that and I can’t fucking stand it.”

“Aw, but why, Gare Bear? It’s so cute.” I said with a fake pout.

He looked down at me seriously. “Not as cute as Gabby.”

That shut me up.

He nudged my shoulder, “Hey, come on I was kidding.”

“I told you never to call me that.” I said lowly.

My name was Gabrielle and Gabrielle only. I told him the first day I met him that I didn’t do stupid nicknames especially Gabby. Not to be mean, but it reminded me of some small, chubby little girl. It reminded me of when I was younger. Garrett noticed that I was serious.

He sucked in his breath sharply. “Geez, Gabrielle, don’t get so butt hurt.”

We had just gotten into the house where the music was blaring loudly making the walls vibrated. I didn’t like being made fun of. I turned around quickly coming face to face with Garrett. I hated that even in heels he still had about four inches on me.

“Look, Garrett, don’t fuck with me. Got it?” My words were like razors.

He took a step away, “Alright, okay? Just—fuck. So you get to make fun of me, but I don’t get to do the same?”

I looked up at Garrett. I searched his eyes. He didn’t really seem mad. To be honest, he just looked like he didn’t belong. He shuffled his feet nervously. I rolled my eyes, “Ugh, come on.”

His blue eyes widened in confusion, “Wha?”

I grabbed his hand and led him toward the kitchen. “Come on.” I repeated with a tug on his hand. “Let’s have some fun.”

We got to the kitchen and my eyes landed on a keg. It was way too loud so I raised my eyebrows to ask Garrett if that’s what he wanted. He shrugged like it didn’t matter much to him. I liked that we were able to communicate without words. I pushed a plastic cup in one hand and grabbed his other hand holding it above my head as I led him to the living room where most people were. We leaned up against the wall and my eyes landed on some blonde girl.

I tapped Garrett’s shoulder and pointed to her. “Oh my fucking God she is so gorgeous. Don’t you think she’s gorgeous?”

He downed his cup and looked down at his empty cup with a shrug, “She’s alright.”

I stared at him and looked back at me confused. “Are you shitting me?” I asked. “Look at her. Hell, if I looked like that—”

His eyebrows furrowed only making his eyelashes bunch together lining his soft blue eyes so that they brightened to a striking pale blue. “Why do girls always do that?”

“Do what?” I raised one eyebrow and had to lean closer to him just to hear him.

He leaned down and ever so lightly his cheeks brushed against mine so that I could hear him properly.“Fish for attention,” he said in my ear.

I pulled away glaring, “I was not fishing for attention.” I had to yell over the loud music.

He cocked his head to the side tauntingly, “You weren’t? Really now?”

There he was again getting under my fucking nerves. I grabbed his forearm and felt my nails digging into skin, but it didn’t even seem to faze him. He let out a laugh and twisted his arm out from under my grasp and leaned toward me. “Because you don’t need to.” He whispered. “You are the most beautiful girl in here. Hands down.”

My cheeks felt warm and I held my fingers up to them in shock. It had been awhile since a guy made me blush like that. I scrunched my nose up at Garrett’s words. I definitely was not fishing for attention or compliments. I watched Garrett as his eyes scanned the room. What was his deal anyways? I still hadn’t figured out what he wanted or even what he liked. He was so hard to read.

He looked over at my lost facial expression and frowned. “Uh, now what?”

I shook my head, looked down and let my hair fall over my face so that when I looked back up I could tuck it behind my ear. “It’s… nothing. Nothing.” I repeated more firmly. “Here.” I said offering my barely drunken cup of beer. “I hate this stuff. I only drink it to have something to drink.”

He took it from me, but kept his eye on me as he downed the remaining contents.

“Don’t look now.” He said after finishing the cup. “But I see somebody who’s hungry.”

“Huh?” Garrett seemed to say the weirdest things.

“That guy over there.” He motioned with his eyes. “He’s practically devouring you with his eyes. Oh, and would you look at that he’s coming over here.” I could barely detect an edge of resentment in his voice.

I followed Garrett’s eyes to see the guy from earlier who had invited me. As he got closer I quickly laced my fingers with his. He gave me a weird look, but didn’t let go. I felt his hand get clammy with sweat. I swung his hand lightly and held it in mine loosely to cool it off. I needed him to relax.

It was time to do what I did best.

Garrett:

Without warning her hand was holding mine. I felt my arm heat up just from this simple touch and then the next thing I knew my hand was getting sweaty. Crap, I thought. Should I let go or would she not want that? Before I could act on my thoughts, she started to swing my hand back and forth until I could feel the air cool it off.

I focused my attention on the guy in front of me. He was a couple inches taller than me and definitely more buff. I couldn’t help but glare at him, natural instincts I guess. I looked over at Gabrielle to see a look on her face that I had never seen before. It was a look of lust, of wanting. I instantly felt jealous, but then again I was the one she was holding hands with.

His freaky gray eyes fell to our hands and then back to me. I tried my best to not falter under his gaze, but it was very difficult. His eyes moved to Gabrielle. “I didn’t know you would be brining someone.” He said lowly.

She gave him a sweet smile, but I felt her hand shake slightly. I thought it was from nerves, but when I looked at her face I could see that it was excitement. There was something seriously messed up with this girl, but I couldn’t get enough. She was like a drug. But her drug was worse, it was like she fed off of attention.

“You never said I couldn’t.” She said indifferently.

His mouth hung open, “Bu-but I thought it was implied.”

I couldn’t help but smile. I was glad that I wasn’t the only one she had this effect on. She buried her face into my neck letting the breath of her laughs bounce off of my sensitive skin. Her soft nose rubbed against my neck. I looked down at the top of her brown hair wondering what the hell she was doing. She rested her head on my shoulder and looked at the guy in front of us.

“You’re cute.” She told him. “But not that cute.”

“Oh and he is?” He asked motioning at me.

Her hand tightened around mine and she let her body fall into me. “Well, let’s see…” She began. “Here I am with him and not with you. So what does that tell you?”

It was fascinating really, the way she was belittling him with her words. This girl could be mean.

“Bitch.” He mumbled before walking away.

She quickly let go of my hand and stood up straighter.

“What was that about?” I asked.

She shrugged. “Rule number five when dealing with douche bag guys: If you don’t want him to mess with you, don’t make yourself available.”

I laughed causing her to frown. “You’re ridiculous you know that. Oh, and I don’t appreciate being used.” I told her jokingly.

“Psh, I wasn’t using you.” She went to shove me lightly but someone bumped into her and she fell forward into my arms. She looked up at me with a grateful smile. I felt like I was staring at her for the longest time just taking in her smile. It was like I was truly seeing her for the first time.

“I wonder if there’s any Tequila.” Just like that the moment ended. She detached herself from me and looked toward the kitchen. “I really want to do some body shots.”

She grabbed my hand and I allowed myself to be dragged back into the kitchen.

At this moment, with her hand holding mine, she could take me anywhere.
