X-Men Evolutions: Of Kings and Pawns

Brotherhood

She could feel him, the telopath. He was filled with mixed emotions over Magneto, she couldn't tell what his intentions were but she kept him out all the same. Emma Frost considered letting Magneto know about her discovery but she thought against it in the given time. She didn't want to disturb him. Magneto, their leader, had just been introduced to the first of the mutants to join his cause; a young mutant they had picked up on the streets of Michigan. Something was wrong though, she could sense it. Magneto was disconnected from the scene, distracted. Although he may have been feigning interest in the mutant standing before him his mind was focused elsewhere. Had he not been wearing his helmet at the time Emma would have read his mind, even though it was forbidden.

Mystique, as she preferred to be called now, entered the room followed shortly by Azazel. Emma gazed at them suspiciously but said nothing. It was Magneto who made the first move, walking swiftly to Mystique, ignoring the plight of the young mutant to hold his attention. Upon receiving a quick, blunt, look Azazel took his leave. Magneto began to speak in a hushed tone to his most loyal follower and Emma watched them curiously, she could not tell from either of their expressions what was being conversed. When their conversation ended with an affirmative nod Emma Frost moved to Magneto, telling him of the suspicions of his telopath friend. Magneto smiled in response and thanked her for informing him before returning to his seat and curtly nodding at Mystique.

Erik could not help but become disinterested in the enthusiastic recruits his followers had found, now that there were more pressing issues at hand. He allowed the young, green, mutant to continue with his elaborate and over-exaggerated account of how he escaped the humans using his abilities. His abilities would be useful to him, Erik could admit that much. But what Erik was more focused on was the research necessary for his plan to take place. Raven would take care of that though.

When Azazel returned to the room it was evident to Erik that Mystique's composure had changed, she seemed more shy and self-concious. It was a change which unnerved Erik slightly. Mystique was his most trusted follower because, with the help he had given her, she had the most useful ability. However now, as the young mutant -who called himself Toad- continued to speak, Erik could see that she was still a child. Or at least, Azazel made her act like a child. He could not tell whether this reaction was due to mere flirtations or an actual relationship but he hoped she wouldn't risk anything that would jeopardize the task he had given her.

What unsettled Erik more, however, was the knowledge that Charles had begun to feel suspicious. He had demanded that Emma Frost always keep a close eye on his old friend and now that he knew of Charles' confusion he would have to tread lightly. Erik knew he couldn't endanger his mission so that Charles' newly named 'X-Men' would be able to stop the start of his battle against mankind. After all that they had done together, Erik couldn't give Charles the upper-hand due to careless mistakes. Charles had created his X-Men and now it was Erik's turn to create his army, an army which he referred to as the Brotherhood. With the plans Erik had in mind for his followers training, Charles would not be able to compete.
