Schizophrenia- A psychotic disorder characterized by loss of contact with the environment, by noticeable deterioration in the level of functioning in everyday life, and by disintegration of personality expressed as disorder of feeling, thought (as delusions), perception (as hallucinations), and behavior.
Medium- An individual held to be a channel of communication between the earthly world and a world of spirits.
Both of these are up for controversy when it comes to Kitty, when she comes to Night House, a home for "sick" children. Her parents and superiors tell her that it's schizophrenia, and that they can help her be rid of it. But the other people at Night House have a different name for what she is: a medium.
