A Marriage Like No Other

Chapter 1

Hello my name is Serena Ibori, I'm sixteen years old. I'm about 5'1, I have a caramel skin tone, with hazel
eyes, and long brown hair down to my waist. I was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, but my family came to
the United States from Kenya in West Africa. My life, I would say was different from most kids my age. I
never really got to do what all the other girls my age were able to do. I really didn't understand why till I was
fourteen. That night change my life forever, but not in a good way.
I was laying in bed, when I heard talking coming from down stairs, So I slowly slipped out of my room, and
sat at the top of the stairs. I seen my father talking with another man in out living room. "Oh yes Sefu I think
my daughter will be a perfect wife for your son." My father bragged. I was shocked. I couldn't believe that my
own father would say something like that. "HUSBAND!" I was so confused and hurt that I didn't even notice
that my mother have found me and was now tapping me on the shoulder.
"You know listening to grown peoples conversation is rude and disrespectful." She said with her hands on her
hips.
"I'm sorry mother, but what is father talking about?" I asked on the verge of crying. She let out a sigh, then
called for me to follower her.
She helped me up off the stairs and lead me into her and my fathers bedroom. She sat on the edge of her bed
patting the spot next to her signaling for me to sit. As I sat next to her, she wrapped her arms around me. After
a few minutes she finally spoke.
" My darling daughter, since you heard your father. I guess you are old enough to know what's gonna happen
to you."
"What is it mother?" I asked looking up into my mother eyes. My mother I would say is one of the most
beautiful African American woman I know. She was about 5'6 with long black hair, with flawless dark
chocolate skin tone.
"Serena your father is looking for your husband."
"My husband! Why mother I'm only fourteen I don't need a husband."
"Honey its tradition, on your seventeenth birthday you are to be married to a man of your father choice. My
father did it for me when I was your age and your husband will do it for your daughter when she is this age."
She said.
"Okay mother." I sighed getting up and walked back to my room. That night I laid on my bed and cried. I
finally understood why I felt so different from all the other children in our neighborhood. I understood why
my father wouldn't let me the play with girls down the street, go to "the" party that friends all my were going
to, or even think of having a boy as a friend. That night I cried cause I finally know why I would never have a
normal childhood or adulthood. I knew that in less then three years I would be in a marriage, in a relationship
like no other. A marriage like no other.
