Blank Stare

That’s what my mom told me almost every day as I grew up. When my dad and her divorced, she had spoken those same six words. I was told that I had to learn to keep my head up and not let it bring me down. She always said you had to accept what happened, because you couldn’t change the past. It was only up to us to change the future and to make the best of what we had. And if I had learned one thing from those six words I’d learned to despise, it was that you had to take life as it came. We had to catch the curveballs life threw at us and learn to throw them right back.

When my best friend and I grew apart and quit talking, those same words were the ones that came out of her mouth as she comforted me. He made his choice, and after all these months I had finally realized that he wasn’t worth it.

And I was perfectly content with living without John O’Callaghan in my life.
