‹ Prequel: Until the End

Two Vibrant Hearts

Soo?

"Hey, Kay. How was-" Mom's voice was cut off as I ran up into my bedroom.

Once inside, I turned and locked my bedroom door and threw my book bag onto the bed. I ran my fingers through my hair as I stared at the bag, but not really seeing it. My thoughts miles and miles away. So many questions and worries pumping through my head. My cell phone beeping in my pocket made me nearly jump out of my skin.

Not breaking my stare off with my bag, I pulled the phone out of my back pocket. I looked down to see 1 message from Jess.

"Sooo?" She texted.

I shook my head as I snapped my phone shut, chucking it onto the bed with a soft thump. I stared at my book bag again, not believing what was really in there besides the books and papers stuffed in there. Banging at my door made me yelp, then that person started jingling the locked handle.

"Kaylie!" My brother's voice echoed through the door. "Open the damn door!"
"Ethan, no cursing!" I heard Mom yell up.
"Sorry, Mom!" Ethan yelled back down to her.
I threw open the door, staring down at my little brother. "What, Eth?"
"Geesh! You on your period or something? Tryna bite my head off." Ethan smirked, just like Dad.
"Shut up, Ethan. Now, what do you want?"
"Just telling you I got off the phone with Dad. He and Uncle Matt are on their way home."
"Are you serious?!" I smiled. I missed Dad so much.
"No, Jesus is really coming to our house- Yes, really!" Ethan threw his hands up in the air.
"Whatever, twerp. I'll be down in a second." I slammed the door in his face, locking it.
"Go change your tampon!" He yelled before heading downstairs.

I took a deep breath before grabbing my bag and heading into the bathroom, locking that door as well. Why? Sense of security, maybe? I don't know. It made me feel somewhat better though. I laid my bag on the counter and unzipped it, staring at myself in the mirror as I reached deep into the bag. My hand contacting it. I gulped as I pulled it out, slowly. Tears brimming up in my eyes as I stared down at it.

It felt so heavy in my hands.
