His Name Is Kirby Jones

seventeen;

Kirby sat on his bed confused after his phone conversation. He knew personally he shouldn’t have passed on that guy’s name. Mostly because there was no need for him to be punished anymore, but the sweet thought of Ronnie and his friends serving just desserts was too good, and to know what Zoey would have revenge too.

Sam Toner would most definitely know that by disrespecting Zoey like that, would be his worst mistake.

“Kirby, supper!” Dora called. Kirby managed to drag himself off his bed, and amble downstairs. He made his way into the kitchen and saw Pop’s looked confused.

“You okay Pops?” Kirby asked gently, as he took his seat opposite him.

“I’m not hungry.” He grunted and looked at Kirby with a look of confusion. Kirby glanced at
Dora as she put Kirby’s plate down in front of him.

“Is he okay?” Kirby asked quietly. Dora patted his hair, stroking it once.

“He’s just irritable my dear, the medication gives him mood swings.” Dora murmured gently, and gave a tender smile. She went to go get the other plates, as she placed a plate in front of her husband, he sneered at it.

“I don’t want it Lindy!” he snapped and swiftly got up, pushing his chair back and leaving the room, mumbling incoherent words.

Lindy Jones was Michael and Dora’s daughter, they hadn’t had any contact since Kirby was seven years old when she decided to leave the face of the earth. They didn’t even know if she was dead or alive.

By mentioning her name, an awkward tension grew in the room. “Does he remember
Mom?” Kirby asked suddenly, picking at his dinner. Dora looked at her grandson; she had worry lines around her eyes.

“It appears so Kirby…” Dora sighed sadly, as she ate her own food.

A few moments of silence passed until Kirby spoke up again:

“Is Pops going to have to go into the hospital?” he asked worriedly. Dora knew she couldn’t lie.

“Eventually he will have to Kirby, but he has a few fighting months in him yet…we have to stay positive.” Dora said, giving a weak smile. Kirby nodded, and ate a few more mouthfuls.

“You’re a good boy you are Kirby…” Dora said softly, and gave an encouraging smile. Kirby couldn’t speak as a lump stuck in his throat. He hadn’t been emotional in a long time, but right now all he wanted to do was cry.

He nodded, speechless, and continued to play with his food, wishing there was some way he could save his Grandfather.

Another week passed of their secret dating and it tallied up to four weeks. The couple were more than happy, well as much as they could be. Kirby wanted to make it official as did Zoey. Zoey had been dealing with her guilt the pass couple of days, and she and Elena had discussed it would be better to tell Kirby now before they would hopefully still become an item. Zoey vowed she would tell Kirby as soon as the time was right.

The reason stopping them is the reaction of Zoey’s brothers. Due to their all close relationship, this secret she’d been hiding could ruin it.

It was now Friday night, and the weekend looked bright. Drew was out on his usual date, to dump his fling, and the other brothers resided indoors, in their own separate rooms.
Marcus was working late, leaving Zoey to make dinner already and feed to clan.
When it rounded up to midnight, Zoey was messing around on Facebook and was debating to go to bed. Suddenly her phone bleeped.

Please say you’re awake? :-) <3 – Kirby

I am indeed, why? :) <3 – Zoey

What about your brothers? <3 – Kirby

Most of them are asleep, Drew and Jonah are downstairs <3 – Zoey

Good, now your window is at the back, second one in....look out <3 – Kirby

Confused, Zoey went to her window and pulled back her curtain and looked closely outside, and gasped as she saw a figure waving at her.

It was Kirby.

Opening her window as quietly as possible, Zoey put her head out.

“Kirby, you can’t be here!” Zoey whispered-yelled frantically, glancing behind her in case her brothers came in.

“Keep it down Zoey, you coming out or not?” Kirby called up quietly. Thankfully the television
was on inside, drowning out Kirby’s voice. He smirked in the darkness as he looked up at Zoey.

“It’s midnight!” Zoey argued

“Live a little!” he argued back, grinning.

“My brothers will kill you!” Zoey threatened, as she glanced at her door again. Her heart racing with nerves

“So be it, I’ll die a happy man” he replied firmly. Zoey’s heart paced rapidly. She wanted to go out, she really did. But she would get into major trouble….

So she did what any person would, she put a pillow under her quilt, turned off her computer and light, threw on a sweatshirt and pulled on some shoes, and opened her window wider.

“I’m coming!” she called softly, and lifted a leg out. Kirby got ready to help her down. He’d worked this all out; just under Zoey’s window was one of the fence walls, where plants grew upwards. It would be easy for Zoey to climb out.

The leaves rustled as Zoey got her foot on one of the holes.

“If I fall and break my neck, I’m blaming you and you can live with –” Zoey rambled, but was shortly interrupted.

“Zoey, just climb down!” Kirby whispered frantically. So she did, slowly but surely, Zoey climbed down, when it was safe, she jumped, however Kirby quickly caught her, not wanting
her to hurt herself.

“You okay?” he whispered as she clung to him.

“This better be worth it.” She whispered back, and let go. He looked so handsome, his hair in its usual mess, he was all in black, a leather jacket on him also. As the breeze picked up, Zoey wished she had picked a thicker jacket.

“It will be, come on…” Kirby said excitedly, grabbing her hand and they ran out of the yard, around the front, and sprinted down the driveway, further up the street where Kirby had parked.

“Where’s your car?” Zoey asked, panting, holding her stomach. Kirby smirked and they slowed to a halt.

“I didn’t bring one.” Kirby remarked, and smirked even wider when he saw Zoey glare at him, crossing her arms.

“You did not walk all the way here.” She snapped, and Kirby chuckled.

“Course not silly…here we are…” Kirby said, as they took five more steps, stopping by a motorcycle.

“This better not be yours…” Zoey laughed, and Kirby grinned.

“I even brought you your own helmet.” He said, and Zoey giggled.

“I’m not going on that…” she said

“Oh yes you are, now put this on.” He remarked smartly, and handed her a helmet. Zoey sighed.

“It’s dangerous Kirby…” she warned.

“Not with me around, I’ll protect you babe…now please come on before your brothers realise your gone.” Kirby said reassuringly. Zoey knew he was right, and put the helmet on, with help from Kirby, they clipped it up.

Kirby got on first, and Zoey got on after, instantly wrapping her arms tightly around his stomach.

“Don’t let go.” He murmured, before starting the engine. It roared to life, and Zoey squealed as they took off, not caring they could have woken the whole neighbourhood.
--

When they reached their destination, it was the beach again. It looked beautiful, with the mood reflecting onto the water, and the soft crash of the waves could be heard. Zoey stretched as she got off the bike, and handed the helmet to Kirby who kicked the stand up.

“It’s so beautiful.” Zoey murmured, as she looked at the glistening water. Kirby strapped the helmets to the bike, and put his arm around her.

“Nothing compared to you.” He said sincerely. Zoey blushed, and her stomach flipped a thousand times. They joined hands instead, and they slowly began to walk down to the beach.

“If my brothers find out I’m gone, I’m literally dead meat.” Zoey said worriedly, in response Kirby sighed.

“You need to chill out Zoey, you only live once…” Kirby urged, and Zoey nodded, knowing he was right. She did need to relax.

“So what did you drag me out here for….just to flirt with me?” Zoey teased, playfully hitting his arm. Kirby chuckled and shook his head.

“Nah, I actually wanted to ask you something…” Kirby said slowly, glancing up at the sky. He breathed in the salty air, and he thanked god that he had Zoey to distract him from his worries.

“You couldn’t wait till tomorrow?” Zoey joked, as she felt him squeeze her hand. Kirby laughed.

“Not so romantic then is it?” he questioned and Zoey giggled.

“Okay, so what is this all important question?” Zoey asked gently, and Kirby stopped walking, and turned to face Zoey.

“About us.” He hinted and Zoey immediately tensed.

“Is this about…?” she asked, trailing off, in which Kirby nodded.
Zoey sighed, knowing she had to tell Kirby about what happened with Ronnie.

“Before you do, I need to tell you something…” Zoey began, noticing Kirby’s smile fell. Guilt swelled in her stomach again, and Zoey dropped his hand.

“You know I told you Ronnie came around last week and he said he was sorry?” Zoey began, Kirby nodded silently. He already knew this before she told him, but wasn’t going to tell her that.

“Yeah?” he urged, desperate to hear what she was going to confess. Zoey breathed in deeply, needing the oxygen to calm herself down. She bit her lips nervously, and glanced up at Kirby, who looked worried.

“What’s wrong?” he asked, worry in his voice. He reached for her, but she took it away. She didn’t deserve his affection.

“Ronnie kissed me Kirby….and for a mere couple of seconds I kissed him back…” Zoey said quickly. Kirby’s face completely dropped, and he instantly felt anger towards that fucking Ronnie Gink.

“He what?” he snapped furiously. Zoey took another gulp of air, and continued.

“I swear to you, it didn’t mean anything to me! I just did it without thinking, but I promise
Kirby, I have no feelings for Ronnie….” Zoey babbled nervously, she couldn’t lose Kirby now.

She just couldn’t.

Kirby sighed, running his hand through his hair. His head whirred with thoughts, but one stood out.

“How about him….does he have feelings for you?” Kirby demanded, trying to keep control of his anger.

Zoey knew there was no point lying anymore, so she nodded. “Yes, he told me…I asked him to leave and that we could no longer be friends…” Zoey said meekly. Kirby grumbled a cuss word, before walking ahead.

Zoey quickly followed him. “I’m so sorry Kirby…I wish I hadn’t even let him into the house.”

Zoey called after him, desperation in her voice. Kirby clenched his fists, breathing in and out deeply.

“You promise?” he asked suddenly, halting abruptly and spinning around to face her again. A flash of confusion waved over Zoey’s face.

“Promise what?” Zoey asked quietly.

“You promise me right now Zoe, that you have no feelings for Ronnie…you promise me…because I don’t want to get into this with you if I know I’m going to get crushed.” Kirby said, his tone slightly cold.

Zoey stepped closer daringly “I promise Kirby, nothing is happening between me or Ronnie, it was a one time, huge mistake….I have no feelings for him. How could I?” Zoey said softly, she didn’t let him answer before speaking again.

“When I have such strong feelings for you? I really like you Kirby….and I want it to be me and you…” Zoey finished, she saw Kirby’s face softened as she stepped closer, finishing the gap between them. She reached out for him and wrapped her arms around his torso looking up at him. She gave a sweet smile.

Reaching up on her toes, she pecked his lips. “Ask me Kirby…please?” she urged, pecking his lips again. Kirby’s body relaxed and he wrapped his own arms around her, his hands on the small part of her back.

“You drive me insane Zoey….but I wouldn’t have you any other way.” Kirby said softly, his old demeanour returning. Zoey smiled, her heart pacing, stomach flipping, all the usual things whenever she was with Kirby Jones.

“Zoey, will you be my girl?” Kirby asked gently, looking at her with smouldering brown eyes that made her almost melt. The moonlight just twinkled at them, making them all the more beautiful.

Without any further hesitation, Zoey replied: “Of course I will” a smile revealed onto her face. Kirby’s own heart lifted, and he bent down and pressed his lips against hers. The tingly feeling came into lips, as they kissed. Their minds going completely blank, only concentrating on what was important now, and it was this moment.

As the kiss deepened, and the adrenaline flowed between them, Zoey didn’t ever want this moment to end. But eventually, they drew apart for air and Zoey realised that now they were official, there was no going back.

“We have to tell people then.” Zoey murmured, as she laid her head on his chest. She felt him move, nodding.

“We do, that’s okay though….I’m sure your brothers will be okay about it.” Kirby said confidently. Zoey scoffed.

“Yeah right, but to be honest right now….I really couldn’t care.” Zoey said, and Kirby grinned.

“Want to go for a walk before we head back?” Kirby offered, Zoey nodded and they took one another’s hands, a new sensation in the air as they walked along the beach, as an official couple.
