Alex found Crystal on her first day of her final year at school, fascinated and scared by her both at the same time he sweeps her off, only to explain that she's half-spirit, and Elemental. And a strong one, who's also gifted with the power of time travel, like he is with telepathy.
He takes her from Newark, New Jersey to some wear in Texas, a 'school' or 'camp', were she realizes even among the other Elemental, she isn't normal.
That specific reason forces both her and Alex to run, to stay hidden, which in Crystal and Alex's state, isn't as easy as it sounds.
