What Happens Over the Summer

Everyone has had a summer romance. You go somewhere away from home, meet this guy and go with the flow for the summer. Then, when summer’s over, the guy will say something like, “wait for me,” or “I’ll see you next summer.” Something overly romantic which translates to: “you have meant absolutely nothing to me, but it was fun, maybe we’ll do it again next time.” But then, you never see him again.
My summer romance was a little different. For starters, he came to me. My sixteenth summer I was working at a bike rental shop on Peter’s Pier, which my grandfather part owned. It was similar to other piers on the Jersey shore but modeled after Morey’s Pier in Wildwood. I’d worked at some summer job on the Pier since I was younger.
Anyway, this guy had come and rent the same bike every day for a week and one day, rented it during my lunch hour and asked if I wanted to take a ride. In my own defense, this guy was capital H-O-T. And so on it went. I learned his name was R.J. and that he was from inland New Jersey. He was eighteen.
And stupid me had fallen head over heels in love with him.
When that predictable end of the summer speech came, he’d said to me: “Jo, there’s some things I need to clear up at home first, but I promise, I’ll be back.”
And stupid me, I’d believed him. And so far, that promise was worth shit. For the past five years, I’ve waited to no avail. I’m still living with my grandparents in their house/museum but now I’m working security on the Pier. And damn if I’m still waiting.
  1. Chapter 1
Maybe it was time to face it. R.J. wasn’t coming back.
  2. Chapter 2
Something niggled at the back of my mind. The boy looked very familiar.
  3. Chapter 3
The boy had looked familiar. Now I knew why.
  4. Chapter 4
"My gun's loaded and I would love an excuse to use it on you."
  5. Chapter 5
"There's only one other blabber mouth on this pier that knows what happened that summer and I will cut off his favorite apendage if he opens his mouth," I said, glaring at R.J.
  6. Chapter 6
"Max told me that he was five. Which means he was born either right before us or while you were here."
  7. Chapter 7
"If it wasn't interesting, why did you walk off and leave another guard in charge of what was your job?" Grams asked.
  8. Chapter 8
How the hell was I suppose to respond to that? Scream "you're bastard father is no friend of mine"? No matter how much I would like to do that...
  9. Chapter 9
"MAD?! That's a tame word asshole, I'm pissed!" I practically yelled at R.J.
  10. Chapter 10
As he'd talked he'd started leaning in closer and I felt drawn to him like a magnet...
  11. Chapter 11
"I'm perfectly happy," I practically snarled.
  12. Chapter 12
And all I could think was...hell I couldn't even think.
  13. Chapter 13
Oh God what had I done?
  14. Chapter 14
"He makes you-hell-a girl for lack of better words."
  15. Chapter 15
"Daddy, give her a kiss and make her feel better."
  16. Chapter 16
"You're right! You don't know me! If you knew me you would have stuck around when I went bat-shit crazy on you. I tend to yell at the people I love when I'm frustrated with them!"
  17. Chapter 17
And for once, when I nodded, I meant it.
  18. Epilogue
I smiled over at R.J. and couldn't resist mouthing. "Happily Ever After."
