Best Friends Forever.
Past midnight, and yet the two children were still up. They had snuck out of their houses, only a few doors down from eachother, and had met in Helen's back garden. Joey was secretly scared of the dark, but he would never admit it to Helen. Helen had been the one to come up with the idea, obviously, and Joey went along with it. He could never refuse Helen anything.
"Joey?" Helen reached out and grabbed Joey's arm in the dark, and clung onto it.
"Yeah?" Helen dragged Joey over to the bench and sat down on it, Joey following suit. She leant her head on his arm and sighed softly.
"Will you promise me something?"
Joey's repsonse was almost instant.
"Anything you want, Lennie."
Helen dipped her head under his armpit and wriggled, so that his arm was around her shoulder and wrapped her arm around his waist. Joey's heart thudded in his chest, and he wondered if this was what love felt like. He held her tightly.
"Promise me, promise, that we'll be best friends forever?"
"Promise."
