Fear Is Just for Losers

Breaking Out of the Shell

I didn't speak for another few minutes. A full make over? Then Eliza broke the awkward silence.
"You seem a little tense there, sweetheart." She peered at my reflection in the mirror and pulled a comb through my hair. "Lighten up. Things will work out."
I raised an eyebrow. "Eliza... you're going to dye my hair and stuff? Like witness protection or something?"
She nodded once. "Better to be on the safe side."
"Oh."
"What are you thinking about?" She asked.
My gaze lowered to my feet. "I guess I'm just nervous and a little scared." I shook my head slowly at her in the mirror. "Eliza, I don't want to go back there."
She sighed and patted my shoulder. "I understand. But please, don't worry about it anymore. Mr. McMahon is a smart man. He knows what to do."
There wasn't anything more I could say. I just had to trust her judgment and leave things to Mr. McMahon. It was the only hope I had left.
I decided to change the subject. "How long have you been working here, Eliza?" I was trying to keep my head from drifting back to the cops.
She pulled my hair up into a messy bun, loosening a few strands towards the front. "A few years. I love it here. Mr. McMahon is good to his employees."
"That's good."
She smiled lightly. "So, tell me how you're feeling about today. You nervous or excited about working with the guys?"
I couldn't help but grin a little. "I don't know. More nervous I think."
She laughed. "Oh come on. You've got an arena full to the brim with every kind of hunk you could imagine." She raised an eyebrow at me. "What chick wouldn't be excited?"
I shook my head. "I'm just nervous that I won't fit in. That maybe no one will like me."
"That won't happen, hun. The guys'll love you." She added with a crooked grin. "Trust me."
I chuckled quietly and let my mind wander back to the match with The Brood. My cheeks flushed pink.
"See?" She said, noticing the small tint change in my face.
I rubbed my bruise. "Who do you like the best here, Eliza?"
She laughed loudly and spun the chair around until her face was inches from mine. My eyes widened.
"Between you and me," she smiled wickedly. "I'm jealous of Stephanie because she's married to Paul."
I gave her a look. "Stephanie McMahon?"
"And Triple H, hun."
"Oh." I made a face. Yuck.
"But to really answer your question, I'd have to say that out of the guys, I like Punk the best."
"Punk?"
She nodded. "You'll meet him eventually."
Then, she picked up another brush and ran it down my arms again. I was mortified. But, she silenced me before I could try and explain myself. "Don't worry about it, hun. We all have our demons."
I blinked. I was really starting to like Eliza.
Then, she helped me off the stool and led me into a back room where racks of clothes hung.
"You can give these a look. Chose anything you want."
"Anything?"
Really? My eyes widened and I walked over, letting my fingers grasp each garment. Each one was different, made of various materials and colors. I noticed that the majority of the outfits were in tints of purple, blue and black. It was really hard to chose something just right.
"It's weird, huh?" Eliza smiled.
I nodded. "There's people out there that would kill for this opportunity."
"Hun, in this business, good looks can get you everywhere."
I didn't know exactly what she meant by that, but I decided that it was probably something I didn't even want to understand. For another few minutes, I continued pulling out outfits that looked a little too sexy for my job. Eliza sensed my struggle and quickly flipped through the rack, pulling out a two piece outfit. "You like silver?"
"It's my favorite color." I said, letting my eyes gaze over the glittered pants.
"Good." She pointed to the dressing room and gestured for me to change.
I pulled the outfit against my chest and made my way over. As I walked inside and closed the door, my head began to spin and I had to sit down. Maybe I died while I was sleeping and now I was in Heaven. How many jobs out there were this awesome?
I tried to shake off the dizziness and quickly removed my jeans and halter top. Then the door opened slightly and Eliza threw something at me.
"Make sure to wear that under your shirt, okay?"
"Sure." I reached down and picked up the metallic blue fabric. It was a push up bra. My eyes widened.
Once everything was on, I looked into the mirror behind me. For a moment, I stared in complete awe of the person that stared back. This reflection was still Alexa, but something was different. It was like this Alexa was a completely new person. This Alexa had an opportunity to escape and turn herself into someone. Feelings of indescribable happiness overwhelmed my heart. Then, the door opened quietly behind me.
"Does it fit?" Eliza peeked her head in.
I turned around and shook my head, completely speechless.
A grin appeared on her lips and her eyes ran down my body. "Mr. McMahon is going to be very happy."
I blushed and gazed down at the glittery outfit once more. "Thank you so much."
"You look beautiful, hun."
Smiling, I asked. "So besides dodging cops, what am I doing today?"
She laughed boldly. "I'll probably end up handing you over to Leeanna, who will show you around and from there, I have no idea. Maybe you'll get to meet some of the guys." She winked at me.
I ran my hands over the glittery pants and tried not to think about Matt or Jeff.
"Okay. Let's get started." Eliza grabbed my hand and pulled me through the room and back out into the hall.
"You really think they'll like me?"
She laughed as she pulled me along. "With that body, hun, absolutely. Especially Mr. McMahon."
"I'm not too familiar with the company but I tried to do some studying about it." I added. "I really want to do well."
"You'll be fine, honey. Studying is good- do you have a favorite wrestler yet?"
My cheeks turned crimson red. "I don't know."
Eliza peered at me and rolled her eyes. "Mmhm. Your face sure tells the opposite."
I laughed lightly. "Okay. There was this tag team I saw..."
"Oh yeah?"
"Yeah. And they were kind of interesting..."
She nodded. "A new tag team?"
I shrugged.
"What's their names?"
I licked my lips nervously. I felt like I was about to reveal a deep, dark secret. "I think they're Matt and Jeff."
Eliza's smiled widened. "I knew it."
"You did?"
She nodded. "By the way you dress, I could tell you'd like them. The Hardy's are two of the nicest people in the WWE."
My heart leaped.
"So, try not to worry so much, okay? You'll be fine."
There was nothing I could do except agree.
After pulling me down another long corridor, we came upon the most activity I'd seen in the arena all day. Eliza released the grip on my arm and cupped her hands around her mouth.
"Leeanna! I've got your girl!"
Standing in a large group of guys was a young woman with blonde hair. When she heard her name, she whirled around and smiled brightly at me. I couldn't help but grin back.
"Is that Alexa?!" She called. "She's beautiful!"
I bit my lip.
"Okay, hun. Good luck." Eliza kissed my cheek and walked back the way she'd come. Panic tugged at my heart suddenly- I felt comfortable with her. I didn't want her to leave me. But, this was my new job. I'd have to come out of my comfort zone for a little while.
Leeanna gestured for me to join the group she was in. I took a deep breath, trying to muster up some confidence and walked over.
"I want you to meet some of the guys." She smiled to me, pulling me around in front of her.
There were eight guys standing around her and I peered around to each one in the circle. A flood of confidence rose in my stomach. I recognized most of them from the DVD's I'd watched. When my gaze rested on the man with the long blonde hair, I knew him instantly. My cheeks flushed pink. This was Edge.
"Okay guys. This is Alexa. Vince hired her yesterday. Be nice to her."
One guy pushed his hand out to me.
"Hey, I'm John. How ya doin'?"
I nodded, taking his large hand. He was huge! "Hi John. I'm good thanks, and you?"
"Couldn't be betta'."
Then, scanning the small circle of guys, I pointed at the tallest one. "The Big Show, right?"
He rubbed his arm. "Yup. Nice to meet you."
I nodded, silently pleased with myself. "And I know Edge, Chris Jericho and Shawn Michaels." Looking at each in turn. "I'm sorry about the rest of you."
Leeanna laughed quietly. "This is Evan Bourne..."
He nodded to me.
"... Shannon Moore... and MVP."
I waved to each of them.
"Okay guys. I'll see you later. I gotta take Alexa to see Vince."
"See ya lata' Lee." John nodded to her. I waved to them.
"What do you think so far?" She whispered as we walked out of ear shot.
"Everyone seems really nice. I just hope I can remember all their names."
She smiled wide. "You'll learn real fast, believe me."
I laughed.
"Oh my god," she cried, smirking. "Isn't John just the cutest thing you've ever seen?"
I shook my head. "I don't think he's really my type. But he seems really nice."
Her mouth dropped open. "Are you kidding? He's sooooooo fine." She grasped at her heart and then she laughed. "What's wrong with him? Are you into the creepy looking guys?"
I have her a weird look. "Creepy looking?"
She laughed harder. "Just wait. Come with me."
She grabbed onto my arm and much like Eliza, dragged me down a few hallways until she stopped in front of a door with a sign saying "CM Punk."
"Punk." Was that who Eliza was referring to earlier?
My breath caught in my throat when she knocked on the door. She winked at me and pulled out an envelope.
"Hey Phil! I got something for you!"
We heard movement inside and then a man with long black hair pulled open the door.
"Hey Leeanna. What's up?" He asked gazing over at me. "Oh hi. You must be the new girl."
My eyes widened and my cheeks turned pink. "Yeah. I'm Alexa."
"Nice to meet you. I'm Phil... or Punk. Whichever you prefer." Grinning, he pushed his hand out to me.
Then Leeanna handed him the envelope. "There you go. Good luck during your match tonight."
"Thanks. Nice meeting you Alexa." He nodded to me and closed the door.
Leeanna smiled at me and pulled me away from the door. "You actually think he's cute?!" She squealed.
I inhaled deeply, speechless. "Now that..."
She giggled wildly. "Alexa already has a crush on Phil!"
I laughed along with her.
We were silent after that, walking to Mr. McMahon's office. Butterfly wings tore around my stomach like razor blades as we walked passed wrestler after wrestler. Some looked like they were in their gear, some of them had duffel bags on their shoulders. Would I end up meeting all of them today?
Leeanna's knocking snapped me back into reality. "Mr. McMahon? It's Leeanna. I've got Alexa for you."
"Come in! Come in!" He called from within.
She smiled at me, shrugged her shoulders and pulled me inside. To say the least, it was one of the strangest looking offices I had ever seen. There was a desk with a couch against the wall. Hanging in enlarged frames on the wall were various pictures of wrestlers with championships dangling from their fists. Against the far wall stood a large flat screen television which monitored the activity in the ring. The screen displayed several crew members assembling the ropes and making sure everything was working correctly.
"Well good afternoon, both of you." Mr. McMahon scanned my outfit from where he sat at his large desk. "How has your day been so far, Alexa?"
I smiled to him. "It's been great. Everyone is so nice."
He nodded, content. "You look beautiful."
I blushed. "Thank you."
"What do you want me to have Alexa do today, Mr. McMahon?" Leeanna interjected.
He inhaled deeply and looked me over again. "For today, I think we'll just have her walk around, get used to the setting..." He caught my gaze. "Maybe introduce yourself to some of the guys?"
I nodded. "I did some homework. I know some of them already."
He smiled. "I think you're going to do just fine. Off you go then."
