His van hit a rock and the tires went skidding out of control. The cell phone fell from his hand. As his foot jammed onto the brakes the vehicle sharply swerved right and headed straight into someone walking unaware down the side of the lane. There was a loud, sick thudding sound.

Five seconds later, someone screamed.
