An Unwanted Love

four

“Fucktard! Get up!” I hear a voice scream. Right. In. My. Fucking. Ear. I took a swing at the unfortunate soul and hit. I groaned as I sat up. The person, who turned out to be Nathan, was bitching on the floor. Something about a bruise. Serves the fucker right. The clocked showed it was about half an hour after I was supposed to wake up. Brilliant. Fucking. Great.

“Dude, just get up. School. And you owe me for almost killing me, dick.” He said, smiling some. The kid had a death wish, or something. School, though, would be worse. It was their first day, a month into the semester. Plus, Nate would draw a crowd with who he is: his looks, his personality, his natural charisma. Add that I always drew a crowd with whatever it was people liked about me and it would be awful. Communicating with people all day. Fucking worthless.

I lazily got out of bed and got ready, pulling on whatever my hands touched first. I looked good no matter what, so it really didn’t matter. As I went down stairs I saw that it was still a good ten minutes before I would normally wake up, which pissed me off some.

“Morning, you’re up early!” Alice commented, slightly surprised.

“Thank your son for that.” I replied dryly, earning a chuckle.

“He’s excited and wants you up to be the rain on his parade so he can be all ‘cool’ for school.” Alice told me, showing how well she knew her son since she was probably completely right. Lovely. She handed me a plate full of eggs and toast before sitting down with two cups of coffee, one of which she handed to me. It was made exactly how I liked it. I sent her a small smile and got to eating.

Eventually it was time to go and I went outside, Nate following me and Alice calling for us to have a good day. I started walking toward my motorcycle when something caught my eye. The kid from across the street was leaning against a tree right next to the driveway.

“Why is he there?” I asked Nate, who was starting to walk toward the car. My voice also seemed to catch the attention of the kid who followed his example and walked to the car.

“He’s carpooling with us, remember? Which also means we are taking the car. Every day.” Nathan told me, relief obvious in his voice as he told me about taking the car every day.

“No, we aren’t. You are. I will take my bike if and when I choose. Comprende?”

“Yeah, yeah. Just like home. You know I hate that fucking bike. Anyway, you’re driving the car today.” Nathan told me, getting in the passenger side while the kid got into the back seat. I sighed, irritated, but went to the car anyway.

On the way there the kid was asking questions out his ass. Seriously, who asks so many questions? It isn’t normal. And Nate just had to answer them to keep him going.

“So, who uses that motorcycle I saw?” Dacen eventually asked.

“Rave, it’s his baby. Touch it and he’ll kill you. He only uses the car is he has to take more than one passenger or if I’m going, since I don’t like the bike.” Dacen told him.

“Cool. When’d you get it?” the kid asked, the question pretty obviously directed at me. This time Nathan didn’t say anything so after a moment I answered.

“A while ago.”

“How’d you get the license?”

“Went to the DMV and had a permit.” Really, it took more than that. Took me four months to get the test and all the requirements for a motorcycle license, and then worked two jobs plus some on the side to save up enough to get it.

“How old were you?”

“Young as was legal.” Nate was making this really gross chocking sound from tying not to laugh. “Where the fuck is the school?”

“Turn right at the light and follow the road.” I did so, and the school was a few blocks down. Easy.

I pulled into a space haphazardly, almost hit some kid, flicked him off, turned off the car and got out, slamming my door. The kid and Nate follow my lead, and the kid apologized to the one I almost hit. The other kid said something about me being a dick so I sent a glare his way so he scurried off with his tail between his legs and piss going down his pants. Or, so it looked, at least. After that the kid led Nathan and I to the front office and waited while we got our schedules and shit. The secretary looked confused when handing me mine, so I gave her a look before glancing down at it. No wonder she had a weird look, the schedule only had my last name on it, while every other schedule would have full first and last name with the middle initial. Thankfully, though, Alice was able to pull some strings so mine didn’t.

“Hey, Dacen-” that must have been the neighbor kids name- “check our schedules and see what we have with you.” Nathan asked.

“Sure thing.” The Dacen kid said, taking Nathan’s schedule and then mine. I honestly didn’t care what I had with him, but it would make Alice happy to know I was being nice to him. “Uhm… “ He have my schedule a weird look. Probably the name thing. “Rave, we have ever class but your Advanced Music Composition class together. I have guitar next door that period. Nate, you have everything but second, fifth and sixth with us.” No wonder he gave my schedule a weird look. We were going to be class buddies! Yay! As I took my schedule back I saw that the composition class was second period, when Nate had gym.

After that little interlude we followed Dacen to the… AP Government with Schroder first period. What a joke. I was proven right when we walked in ten minutes late and were still in the first half of the class that had shown up. The teacher saw us walk in and motioned us over, so Nathan and I went over to her while Dacen took a seat. Shroder turned out to be a fairly young and attractive woman. I might come to class.

“New students, great! I see you are… Nathan Bohne and… Wayland? What kind of name is that, if you don’t mind my asking?” She said, looking at our schedules and checking the roster.

“I’m Nathan, and this is my cousin. Uhm, there are some issues with his name so on the schedule it only has his last name, Wayland. Your roster might have the first and last, but either way he won’t respond to it and prefers to go by Rave, if that’s alright.” Nathan explained for me, ever polite.

“Uh-huh. Well, since it’s official enough to keep his name off of official documents then I’ll allow it, even though I generally don’t let nicknames happen. Take a seat wherever. We mostly watch the news and have class discussions on it.” She informs us, so Nate thanked her. “Hold on, Rave, do you talk?”

“Not much, and usually you wouldn’t want him to. When he does it is out of necessity and is usually rude.” Nathan tells her. She nods, just giving me a weird look.

“Well, I hope your choice name isn’t indicative of your lifestyle.” And with that she turned away, Nathan and I dismissed. Nathan and I shared a look before shrugging and going to sit down with Dacen and some slut.

“Hey! I’m Ashlee. New here?” I heard an annoying voice ask, the sound coming from the slut.

“I am Nathan, and this is my cousin, Rave.” I heard Nate answer, but I didn’t make a move to say anything while taking the seat beside Nate with Dacen on Nathan’s other side. She was sitting on Dacen’s desk, her ass practically on him.

“Wow! I could have sworn you guys are, like, twins, but, like, cousins? You look so alike.” She said, holding out the ‘o’ sound in ‘so’ in that annoying way girls do. “Did your families, like, move together or, like, is it just a coincidence that you both, like, ended up here?”

“He lives with my mom and me.” Nathan answers carefully, knowing it wasn’t his place to say anything more or her place to know. He didn’t know any more than that, and even if he did he knew I wouldn’t want him to say more so he wouldn’t anyway.

“Hmm. Well, Rave, you have such a, like, cool and original name! Why’d your parents name you it?” The girl asked. No one said anything, Dacen was probably waiting for an answer, too, and Nathan was hoping I would be nice, but no dice. After a few awkward moments Nate audibly sighed and responded for me.

“It’s just what he goes by, what he tells us to call him. Not a legal name or anything, and no one knows why he chose that. And excuse him, but he isn’t very talkative.”

“Or social. Or nice.” Dacen added in, bored.

“Dace!” I heard a smacking sound from her hitting him. “Be nice! I’m sure he’s just shy!”

“No. I am not ‘just shy’,” I imitate her high pitched voice, “and no one likes your voice. So shut up.” I told her without sparing her a glance. A bunch of surrounding people looked shocked, which was no surprise since they weren’t very good at eavesdropping inconspicuously.

“Told you. Don’t worry though, he bites, but doesn’t have AIDS. Or, I don’t think so, at least.” Dacen said, turning it into a joke as best he could. The slut laughed that… Girl laugh and batted her eyelashes in that flirty way. Disgusting.

“Oh, Dacey, you’re so funny!” She exclaimed. Holy Christ is she annoying.

“Didn’t I say to shut up? No one wants to see you flirt with a guy that obviously isn’t interested, and if you stop flirting it means we don’t have to listen to you. Win-win. We don’t have to hear you or watch you flirt, and you don’t have to be humiliated by his subtle rejection any longer.” I still faced forward, but could hear all of the shocked gasps.

“Rave, stop. You’re being a douche, so apologize.” Nate ordered. I scoffed, which set him off. “Goddamn it! Just because you were wronged before doesn’t mean you can continue to be a fucking shit to everyone! Learn some fucking social skills. Learn how to care about someone besides your own-fucking- self! Christ. Now apologize or I am calling mom and telling her you can’t handle the people and school again.” He said furiously, but in a soft tone no one heard but me. All anyone else knew was that he was glaring.

I turned toward him with a glare, and he froze. I rarely glared at him or Alice, and from what he had told me when I first moved in and would glare fairly often my glare could make the dead flinch. I let him squirm for a moment before turning my gaze around to Ashlee, letting it go by all the people watching. Each and every one of them looked scared. Good.

Once I saw what Ashlee looked like I was slightly shocked. Her hair was platinum blonde, but she was pale enough it looked good. She was attractive. She had tears in her eyes, so it was obvious I ahd been too harsh and was probably still scaring her. I attempted to soften my gaze, but her face didn’t show whether it worked or not. “My apologies.”

“Rave-” Nathan started.

“No. Don’t ‘Rave’ me. You are not my father. You are not my brother. I apologized for you, the end.” I stopped him, and he sent me a hurt glance. I look away and start to doodle on my notebook. Whispers erupted around us, no doubt rumors about the two new boys.

“Rave…” I heard Ashlee say hesitantly. I didn’t indicate if I was paying attention or not, but she continued anyway. “I forgive you. I mean, it is really early and after moving you’re probably really tired. So, I should be the one apologizing. So… I’m-”

I cut her off. “No. Don’t. I am a dick. The end. I know it. That will be the only apology you will ever receive from me, so use it for everything else I will do to make you cry.” I told her, groaning slightly toward the end. I glanced over and saw a small smile from her.

“You’re nicer than you let on, aren’t you?”

“No.”
