Taking Down the Sunrise

Fourteen

Lily smiled down at her textbook as a note fluttered out of it. She leaned down to pick up the pale pink paper and unfolded it carefully. The writing on it was barely legible. She tapped it with her wand and the word changed to a beautiful, curling script.

My dearest Lily,

Your lips take my breath away. Your eyes fill me with wonder. If there was ever a creature more beautiful than you, it would have to be in heaven, for you are my eternal happiness. Without you love, my life has no meaning and I wish you would consider living your life with me.

“Hey,” a voice said just before soft lips touched her head, “What’s that?”

“A love letter,” Lily answered simply.

Severus slid into the seat next to her and asked, “From who?”

“You, of course.”

Silence.

“Not you?” She guessed, “Well... there’s no name, so there’s really no way to tell who.”

“You’re kidding, right? That bastard hits on you every second of every day and you think there’s no way to tell who sent it?” Severus exploded, “I’m going to give that little son of a Gryffindor bitch a piece of my mind.”

“Sev, come on, you really think James could write something like that?”

“He got someone else to write it then!”

“Sev!” Lily begged, “This isn’t going to help anything!”

“It might help the look of his face,”

“Sev-” She started but he was already halfway across the library and heading for the doors.

He walked down the hall with a determination more terrifying than the Dark Lord’s. Stalking down the hall, he headed straight towards the Divination Tower.

The door to the room swung open easily and without a sound. The teacher was nowhere to be found. At the front of the room, James sat with Remus, laughing at whatever they pretended to see within the crystal ball.

“You!” Severus exclaimed.

The entire class turned to look at him and Severus felt all of his courage drain from his body. James smirked at him.

“Hey, Snivellus, what’s going on?”

“I think you know.”

James shrugged non-committedly.

“Don’t pretend you haven’t been hitting on my girlfriend!”

“Then I’m going to have to ask you to stop pretending she’ll be your girlfriend for much longer.”

The two boys glared at each other evenly, both waiting for the other to move first. James’ fingers tapped impatiently against his wand. Severus spat at the floor and took a step forward.

“Are we going to be traditional, or just go at it?” James asked boredly.

“Traditionally.”

Immediately the two of them whipped their wands in front of their faces and then back to their sides. Then James began to bow and Severus hit him with a wicked uppercut. James fell to the floor, unconscious.

Severus smirked, “All’s fair in love and war.”
