Status: This story has its basing in real life situations, some exaggerated, and then a couple added to aid the story. If it sucks please tell me why :)
What if...
Twenty-four
By the time that she’d made it to the road outside, Edmund was barely conscious, and the rest of the party had started to file outside to see why she had run through the house so quickly.
“Edmund...” she said, holding his hand, wishing she knew how to help.
“Sarah, I’m so sorry...” Edmund began. It was one thing to mess up in the middle of your life, but Edmund wasn’t sure if he was going to talk to her again, so he had to say something...
“Don’t worry,” Sarah assured him, pushing his hair back tenderly.
It felt like an age until the paramedics came. Edmund kept slipping in and out of consciousness, and wasn’t able to say anything. Sarah was just kneeling there crying, holding his hand, thinking of all the things she had to say to him, all the things they’d both done wrong, and how this was putting everything is perspective.
Finally the paramedics arrived, and carefully put him on the stretcher, worried about internal injuries. She followed them to the ambulance, but the short blond paramedic stopped her.
“I’m sorry miss, you but you can’t come,” he said, as his partner headed to the cab. Sarah didn’t even think about the response, because she couldn’t think about letting him go alone.
“I...I’m his wife.”
“Alright,” the paramedic nodded, and let her in the back, where she held Edmund’s hand the whole way.
Sarah then didn’t leave him, except to go and eat. Even then she was worried that he’d wake up and be alone, or even they’d move him and she wouldn’t be able to find him.
Then finally it happened, she came back from dinner to find that the doctor was just leaving Edmund’s bedside.
“He was awake for a little while there, he seems to be alright,” the doctor explained. Sarah nodded, and took up her post. Now it was almost harder because she knew he was able to wake. Finally his eyes flickered, but she didn’t notice as she was reading.
“They said you were here,” he said quietly, and she nearly jumped, and turned to see him, not caring that she had a stupid smile on her face.
“I chose the wrong time to eat,” feeling bad that she hadn’t been there.
“Thank you for being here,” he said with a weak smile, and a great amount of genuine meaning.
“Well I couldn’t just leave you,”
“They...they said that you told them that you were my wife,” he began awkwardly, and Sarah blushed.
“I had to say that so that they would let me stay,” she shrugged, “I couldn’t let you come in alone.”
“Thanks,” Edmund replied with a large smile.
“Rachel’s on her way,” Sarah said, to bring the conversation back to reality. It was almost like she was pointing out that Rachel wasn’t faithfully waiting by, and pointing out that she was his choice.
“Will you stay though?” he asked, with an honesty he hadn’t been able to manage before his accident.
“If you want me to stay Edmund, I’ll stay,” she said, realising that she needed his asking as well. Else she was just that girl with a crush on him being clingy.
